Victoria Baker: Hate to state the obvious but, uh, working out. Debbie Anderson Clark: I was blessed with a job with the Y for awhile, but after Marcy Knight left it was not a Young Mans Christian Asso ciation (YMCA). My husbands cancer news spread faster than his cancer, even before we shared it with our children! This was brought to Ryders (Leary-the local director) attention but since Baker was merely a step ping stone for a corporate position not an eye was blinked. Im cheering! This branch is a cancer. Good riddance! Susan Ward: The memories spent there when my boys did sports and my husband was a volunteer coach. I know sports are staying but I will also miss the people there. I liked the smaller environment and the fact that they had nancial assistance for those with a low income. I was think ing of going back because Anytime Fitness is way too high priced for me. Guess that is no longer an option. Schell Barber: Being able to go there and work out without the crowd. The friendly people. A follow-up question we asked was how should the community ll the void left by the tness center closing? Who should take the lead? Government, private citizens, a mix of both? And how should it be funded? Connie Walker: The Y laid the groundwork for this closing when they continually cut back on gym hours. Anyone who works outside the county would have a hard time getting a workout in before 8 pm. At least there is another option for adults to work out but its unfortunate the other programs for kids will be lost. It will take a combination of public and private to ll the void. Jim Rigney: Sad. Way to go Baker County! Rick Colbert: They kept horrible hours for people to work around, even the pool. Back when they had a monopoly on the county, it worked. With competition, I am surprised it took this long.G ov. S cott proposes to veto gay law... Gov. Scott says, after being pressured, he would veto a bill like the one proposed and vetoed in Arizona to allow business owners to discriminate based on sexuality of customers. What do you think? Would such laws help or hurt Florida? Jess Davenport: Someone please explain to me how treating people like theyre people and loving all mankind, like Christ taught, is a slippery slope towards anything but love? Doug Wilds: Not long ago a business owner told customers of certain skin color they couldnt eat in their restaurant. Why be on the wrong side of history again? As a private business owner, you have the right to re fuse service to anyone. As a consumer, I have the right to tell everyone I know not to use your service. Are you in business to provide a service and make money or discriminate based on your religious, social, economic prejudices? Kathleen Esford Johnson: The ho mosexuality that (Arizona Gov.) Jan Brewer spoke of was implied in the bill. The issue arose from the incident where a gay couple sued to have a baker make a wedding cake for them that the owner of the bakery didnt agree with based on his religious values. Gay rights per se should not be mandated by laws, however I am seeing a denite decline in rights as a Christian in the country, and we as a nation are heading down a very slip pery slope. Five minutes later, 9-year-old Jacob Miller cruised past the nish line. Mr. Hartley, 16, who runs on the high schools cross country team, said he thought is was so cool such a young boy was into his sport, the youth deserved a prize. And with that, Mr. Miller was $50 richer. Witnessing the act of selessness by someone in his teens was Mark Broughton, husband to run organizer Allison Broughton, both of Macclenny, touched Mr. Broughton. His thoughtfulness just blew me away, said Mr. Broughton. More recently, as Mr. Broughton and his business partners were rolling out an athletic clothing line Heroes Brand and giving samples to athletes they believe live the spirit of the brand, the entrepreneur decided that Mr. Hartley deserved some swag too. They all gathered at a Macclenny sportswear retailer where the clothing is sold to present the teen with his gear. Mr. Broughton said the clothing line touts everyday heroes who exemplify good behavior rather than negative behaviors some athletes exhibit today, like cursing and trash talking. The company has also donated items to two martial arts athletes. www.bakercountypress.com rrfrnnrt START TALKINGBEFORE THEY START DRINKINGKids whodrinkbeforeage15are5 timesmore likely to have alcohol problems when theyre adults. We miss and love you each and every day. It still seems like it was yesterday. We know that you are at rest, but the Lord knows what was best. You will always be in our hearts and will never, ever depart. We love you. YOUR FAMIL Y WIFE,CHIL DREN AND GRANDCHIL DREN In loving memory ofJohn Cod Merrett10/13/1945-3/7/2013The moment that you died, my heart was torn in two. One other died with you. I often lie awake at night when the world is fast asleep, and take a walk down memory lane, with tears upon my cheeks. Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday. But missing you is heartache that never goes away. I hold you tightly within my heart and there you will remain, until the joyous day arrives that we will meet again. YOUR L OVING WIFE AND FAMIL Y In loving memory ofMichael Ray TetstoneMarch 10, 1989Happy Birthday! We will always remember you, and want to wish you a Happy Birthday in Heaven. You are still missed by family and friends, and we will till we see you again. All those recipes we failed to jot down; you took them with you to your heavenly town. The restaurants now see us more, with less and less opening of that oven door. Your family, up there, you saw again. Joy from that, and youre in no pain. For now we will come to a close, so thankful that Jesus as your savior you chose. WE L OVE AND MISS YOU, THE PENNY THOMAS FAMIL Y Thanks so much In Christian love, Dennis Whelan Purchase this photo at www.bakercountypress.com Photo by Jim McGauleyMinisters get tour of revamped churchPastor Randy Williams (right) of the First Baptist Church of Glen St. Mary hosted a lunch meeting of the Baker County Ministers Association on March 4 that included a tour of the recently revamped sanctuary on George Taber Blvd. in Glen. Rev. Williams explained to the 18 attendees that the new design that includes a redesigned entrance foyer (shown in photo) and 970-theater seat main sanctuary aims at solidifying the worship experience of one of the countys largest congregations. A unique feature of the backdrop of the sanctuary is a large, backlit cross that at rst glance appears to be o-center but only because of a stone facade. The message, Rev. Williams noted, is for congregants to focus on re-centering their lives on Christ and His message. The lunch portion included a presentation by NEFSH chaplain Gene Burnsed on services oered at the state mental hospital south of Macclenny. Subscribe to our E editionwww.bakercountypress.com
