The issue of revitalizing downtown Macclenny resurfaced on Facebook dur ing the last week, as did a few reactions to the announcement about widespread mosquito spraying and patronizing local shops and restaurants. On the mosquito plague:Clayton Yarbrough: Seen a couple of these huge buggers with landing gear this year! Charmazing McWonderful: Them things are big enough to pick you up and take you away! Nancy Foss: I hope they spray in Baxter, they usually ignore us. Marsha Bennett: Big as mock ingbirds and sound like kamikaze planes as they zoom in for the attack! I hope they spray US 90 east of Sanderson ... We are plagued with millions of them. Jennifer Fraser Sapp: Guess that knocks Taylor out since we are in the forest? We desperately need it here. They are huge! Kevin and Lesly Dugger: Praise the lord! Rita L. Sheridan: Cant wait to get a little relief here o John Rowe Road! These things wait for you to come out and attack, they are vicious! We asked on July 13, What do you think would help revitalize our local downtown area? Tax breaks, infrastructure improvements, etc.? Heres what our Facebook fans had to say:Debi Tisdel Doyle: Parking lots, restrictions on building exterior colors in hues comparable to The Press and Dixie Outtters, colorful awnings, historical visitors. Jason Randall: A pretty big renovation of the historic buildings would draw the attention of new clientele. Debi Tisdel Doyle: Small business incentives (lower rent, this isnt San Marco!), and freeing up money from the budget to landscape and restore! But it takes vision, motivation and commitment to grow, prosper and create jobs. Just ask anyone travel ing east or west. They dont even know that there is a downtown Macclenny, Heritage Park, Old Jail etc. because its not promoted and fast becoming a ghost town! Cherie Porter: Parking! Cynthia Johnson Sloan: Some great ideas here. How about re routing the semis around down town? Is that doable? I would like to open a shop but not in a ghost town. How do we get started on making changes? I am willing to work but Im not sure where to be gin. Scarlett Rewis Papas: Landscape architecture and ongoing monthly events (perhaps market days) that are advertised on events calendars in Lake City and Jacksonville. Rachel Ratli Hodgson: More business would come if Baker would drop the beer law. Better Food places would come. The media is constantly reporting on the state of the economy in our country. Should our county commission be concerned about this? Absolutely! We are already feeling the impact of the economic downturn in the United States. Many Baker County citizens are unemployed, others are taking reductions in salary & bene ts as businesses strive to keep the doors open. Many of our residents have to commute to surrounding counties for employment. Many citizens are facing foreclosure on their largest investment, their home. When elected to the Baker County Commission I will strive to implement aggressive strategies with our Chamber of Commerce to attract businesses that will bring jobs & tax revenue to our county without harming our environment and eco-system. Not just any business should be considered. What good is having a job if you live in fear of losing your water supply, or you fear the air you breathe might contain harmful pollutants, or you see the value of your home & property decreasing due to exempted land uses?
