With little wind to lend a hand, children, including third grader Lillia Munn above, sought out plenty of running room to dash back and forth in hopes of keeping their kites aloft. A number of parents joined the fun, often untangling kites strings, keeping them out of trees or otherwise assist ing with the endeavor. Groups of students took turns occupying the open eld on the campus east side for the annual outdoor event. Rafael Gonzalez Macclenny The Florida Times-Union The Press Facebook page was a lively place for debate this week. There were reactions to a column in last weeks edi tion by our own Jessica Prevatt about the proposed special assessments for Emer gency Medical Services, plus discussion of the request to close Barber Road by residents of the dirt thoroughfare. Heres some of what they had to say ... Tracey Dunmire Anderson: I just read in the paper about them wanting Barber Road closed. I dont think that is right. Yes, I am one the people who take the road to go to Walmart, but I am one that does stop at the stop signs and I also blow my horn on the van at night. I ash my lights to make sure no one is coming. It takes less gas to go that way than the long way to Lowder St. or the interstate. Now, I also think it is very gross that people are using it for a bathroom. That is so gross. Dennis Whelan: And, the county does maintain this road, so are the residents will ing to take over that responsibility? I know that I live on a dirt road, and if it wasnt for me maintaining this road, it would be lled with large ruts. Leigh Dubie Tracy: I use that road occasionally as well, since that is a long about way to get to Wally World. I am the one who stops for the signs, and usually there is someone behind me that gets irritated because I do read the signs, and I once had a truck come ying around the curve and nearly missed me after I stopped and was just starting to roll on the peddle to go ... And I havent found that geoacache that is down at the creek bed. Desiree Thomas Gris: I agree with Dennis. If the road is closed, are the homeowners still expecting the county to maintain that road? If the county still main tains it after they close it, that is considered a county road and coun ty residents should be able to drive down it just like the people that live on it. We as taxpayers are paying to maintain that road now. They cant just throw up a road closed to thru trac sign and say county residents cant come down it. People, this isnt your private driveway, it is a county road! Jay Cannaday: Someone shouldve thought about that when they put the stop signs on George Tabor Blvd. in Glen by the church its not the churchs driveway! In responding to Mrs. Prevatts col umn, Theresa Rhoden sparked a discus sion about taxes and public services. Theresa Rhoden: Let me get this straight ... If you are a property owner in Baker Coun ty and you dont want to see your taxes go up, according to Jessica Prevatt, you are selsh? Are you kid ding me? Can someone please tell me what other ways have been con sidered to close this budget decit besides raising my taxes? And why wont other options work? ... Jessica Prevatt: I recall an article in the paper regarding a recent commission meeting where the constitutional ocers were told to cut their bud gets by at least 10 percent after being asked for cuts last year also to keep the millage the same as scal year 2010. Baker County has the 26th lowest property tax, or millage, rate in the state. I rmly believe there are places which can be trimmed in some offices but an EMS fee/tax will go directly to a much-needed service for local residents. They wont be able to use the money for anything other than salaries, equipment and other things directly related to the EMS service. If I need to chip in an addi tional $50-$100 a year to ensure we have good employees and equip ment, Im more than happy to do that. I pay way more to the federal government every year and those are the taxes which concern me and where I feel the most change needs to happen. Theresa Rhoden: It is my un derstanding that the $1.6 million deficit is from uncollected trans port fees. This decit did not hap pen overnight. It is my understand ing that EMS has outstanding bills from as far back as 2007, maybe farther. Have the people that owe the money been contacted to set up a payment plan? Has the county contracted with a collection agency to collect the money owed if all else fails? ... The easy thing to do is pass the bill onto the taxpayer. We are taxed enough already. Jessica Prevatt: Im sure they try to collect those bills, but I would imagine in a lot of cases its like getting blood from a turnip. If people dont have the money whether its sorriness or bad luck, they dont have it. Are we going to start sending the EMS out and making them collect up front for services rendered? Theresa Rhoden: I think you are missing my point. Our elected officials knew about this for years and chose to do nothing. They watched the decit grow every year but took no action to collect the money that was owed for services provided. Now they are operating in the red. It is my understanding that two years ago the idea of turning the uncollected bills over to a collection agency was being kicked around but no ac tion was taken. Now they come to the property owners. Do you really think that is the right thing to do? Then on March 26, one week before Spring Break, we asked our Facebook faithful, Are you planning a fun trip for the kids? Blanche E Legendre Chinn: Yep heading to Daytona Beach with the grandchildren ... Fun, fun, fun! Angie Davis: Going to the movies and shop ping for Easter. Son and Mother cant wait. Colleen Scharphorn Harvey: Myrtle Beach and then Disney. Join The Press at Facebook.com.
