YOU DON'T HAVE TO IMAGINE WHAT HISTORIC
SAN JUAN WAS LIKE. YOU'LL SEE IT ALL
AROUND YOU.

Founded in 1521, San Juan is one of the oldest colonial cities in
the Western Hemisphere. Its Spanish influence is most visible
,,. in the historic district of Old San Juan, located on the city's
northwestern peninsula. Just several blocks in size, the city is
enclosed by a massive wall constructed when it was still a military
_' _outpost. The best way to experience the historic treasures, that
11 have survived for centuries, is through a leisurely walking tour
of the district.
Among Old San Juan's main attractions are Forts San Cristobal and
San Felipe del Morro with its 18-foot (5.5-meter) walls at the
harbor's entrance. La Puerta de San Juan is a sight to behold. The
strong, heavy wooden gate was the official entrance for those who
came to Puerto Rico aboard sailing ships during its colonization
Up a block is the San Juan Cathedral, one of the few examples
of medieval architecture in the Americas. The San Jose Church,
also in close proximity to the area's other historic landmarks, is the
