Q. How does the budget for new books and serials look this year?

A. No great changes in the library allocation are expected from the past year,
while serial subscription rates continue to rise. One way in which additional
support is being sought is through fundraising. See the Library Campaign article
in this issue for more details.
Q. What makes Special Collections so special?

A. The library's Special Collections include painstakingly-assembled primary
sources in particular areas that are of great value to researchers. Because they are
difficult or impossible to replace, they cannot be not allowed to circulate. Learn
more about these at http://special.uflib.ufl.edu/ and about the University of
Florida Archives by reading the article in this issue.
Q. Why has the library catalog changed so much?

A. Librarians here and at the Florida Center for Library Automation have been
striving to improve the access and usability ofWebLUIS (the new online catalog
and various indexes] and would welcome your feedback. See the insert with this .
issue to learn more.
Q. What is the difference between long and brief views in the library catalog?

A. The brief view aims to allow quick and clear identification of the item by giving
only important selected parts of the description, while the long view gives a more
complete description.
Q. Why are so many books kept in storage, and how hard is it to get something
retrieved for my use?
A. We've been adding new books and journals faster than we've been able to add '
more library space, resulting in the need for off-campus storage. You may request .
items from the paged storage collection electronically from http://
www.uflib.ufl.edu/storform.html or at any circulation desk. They will usually be
retrieved within one or two working days.
Q. What advantage is there to using the new WebLUIS over traditional LUIS?

A. WebLUIS is easier to use and enables direct linking to many remotely accessed
resources, both indexes and full text.
. How can I consult the library catalog and indexes from my home or office
computer?
A. From a networked computer use your Netscape or Internet Explorer browser
to visit the library site at: http://www.uflib.ufl.edu and follow instructions for the
library catalog, various indexes, and full text resources.
