The Lodge soon initiated other outstanding men in the community
and elected Brother Henry S. Chubb as their second Exalted Ruler. In
1908 Brother Chubb was recognized by the Grand Lodge when he
received the appointment as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of
North Florida.
The meeting were first held in the Dutton Bank Building on West
University Avenue. On October 16, 1905 the Burnett Home on the
Southeast corner of West University Avenue and S.W. 2nd Street was
purchased and the Lodge moved there. In 1941 the Theta Chi Fra-
ternity house at 903 W. University Avenue was purchased by the
Lodge and this has been our location to date.
It is interesting to note that the Lodge once purchased consider-
able gymnasium equipment and then stored it away for several years
without putting it to use. Finally the equipment was set up for the
Ladies to have Gym Classes.
During Brother Ray Driver's term as Exalted Ruler the Lodge
building was redecorated both in and out and new furniture and
fixtures were installed. The above was done in anticipation of Gaines-

ville Lodge being host to the Florida State Elks Convention which was
scheduled for April 1929.
Brother Harold Colee, District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, from
St. Augustine, visited the Lodge officially on February 1, 1929. Brother
Colee outlined the Convention program to the Lodge and stated that
the events and dates would be broadcast over WJAX in Jacksonville
and WIOD in Miami Beach to encourage a large attendance. The State
Convention was very successful and this reflected commendation upon
Exalted Ruler O. E. Knox and his Committees.
It has been noted in the Lodge minutes throughout the years, that
even though they had many hard struggles financially and otherwise,
the members never neglected worthwhile charitable projects, Youth
Work in the community, and other Benevolent programs.
The Gainesville Lodge has always been very interested in the
Harry-Anna Crippled Children's Home at Umatilla, Florida. For a
number of years 990 has contributed its per capital quota to the home,
and individuals have contributed gifts as well as subscribed to
Founders Certificates.
The Youth in the community have not been overlooked by our

Lodge, Christmas Parties and teen-age dances were popular in past
years. More recently Cub and Brownie organizations have been spon-
sored. High School Football Teams have been entertained with ban-
quets annually over a period of years, and for the past two years a
Babe Ruth Baseball Team has been sponsored by the Lodge.
In 1949 the officers of the Lodge under the leadership of Exalted
Ruler Chas. H. Ripper, entered a Ritualistic Contest for the first time.
Officers of the Lodge have competed annually since 1949 and in 1952,
1954, and 1955, won the District Contests and competed in State
competition.
The Gainesville Lodge has' been recognized by the Grand Lodge
and the Florida State Elks Association frequently by appointments of
Officers and Committeemen.
Brother J. Maxey Dell who served as Exalted Ruler four. years
was appointed District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler at Atlantic City,
N. J. in 1938, and has continued active in Elkdom.
Brother Rupert G. Zeigler was elected Vice-President of the Flor-
ida State Elks Association in Lakeland in 1944 and was appointed
District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler in 1945 at New York, N. Y.
Brother (Dean) Walter J. Matherly served as Vice-President of
the Florida State Elks Association in 1946-47. He was appointed Dis-
trict Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler at Miami in 1950 and had the honor
of being elected State President at Daytona Beach in May, 1951,
while still serving as District Deputy. In 1953-54 Matherly was ap-
pointed and served on the National Youth Activities Committee. At
the time of his passing, he was active as Chairman of the Operating
Committee of the Harry-Anna Home, a member of the Board of Direc-
tors of the State Elks Association, and a member of the Trustees of
the Harry-Anna Trust Fund.
Brother B. W. Bryant served on the Harry-Anna Crippled chil-
drens Home Operating Committee for eight years and was appointed
District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler at St. Louis in 1953. He is presently
serving as State Chairman of the National Foundation Scholarship
Committee.
Brother J. Pierce Smith served as Vice-President of the Florida
State Elks Association in 1954-55, and was appointed District Deputy
Grand Exalted Ruler at Philadelphia in 1955, by our present Grand
Exalted Ruler John L. Walker of Roanoke, Virginia.
Brothers G. B. Tison, Patt S. McCormick, Samuel W. Getzen, J. Ray
Driver, H. J. Richardson, W. H. Burke, E. F. Beville, M. A. Milam, W. H.
LaGrave, Perry McGriff, W. W. Howell, Leon Mims, P. Sledge Prevatt,
A. M. Henry, Foster Brunson, M. Johnny Walker, Martin Vickers, and
many others have maintained an active interest in the Lodge through-
out the years.
The membership for the past 14 years will well agree that
Brother "Bill" Wm. Jennings has served the Lodge faithfully as
Secretary and much of our success is due to his untiring efforts.
