PREFACE

The publisher takes pleasure in presenting to the pub-
lic Volume IV of the Gainesville City Directory, feeling
that it will be received with that degree of confidence
which he trusts the work deserves.
No city in the interior of Florida has grown with more
marked rapidity than Gainesville within the past few years,
note of which has been made not only throughout the
State, but in other sections of the country. This goes as
evidence of the unity of ler people when it comes to any-
thing looking towards the advancement of the city and its
interests, and to the efforts of this progressive citizenship
is due the prosperous atmospheric conditions which sur-
round us.
This volume places Gainesville in rank as the fifth city
of importance in the State in point of population. The pop-
ulation as shown here is 8,706, of which 4,602 are white,
and 4,o04 are negroes. This.is an increase of 1,371 over.
1908, when the population was 7,335, with about the same
proportion of whites and negroes.
Compiling a directory for a city of even 8,500 is by no
means a small task. It has been truly said that there are
only two classes who never make mistakes. One is the
dead, the other the unborn; hence the publisher takes this.
occasion to state that the absolute correctness of this work
is not guaranteed.
Embodied in this volume will also be found a Directory
of patrons of the six rural free delivery routes leading out
of Gainesville, which the publisher trusts will prove of
some value to those requiring such Directory. This does
not include the population noted above, however.
To the business and professional men for their liberal
advertising patronage, as well as to all others who ren-
dered valuable information which helped to make the work
complete, the publisher takes this method of expressing
his gratitude. Sincerely,
THE PUBLISHER.

DIVIDING LINES.

This city is divided into four sections, viz.: Northeast,
Northwest, Southeast and Southwest. The Courthouse Square
is designated as the Geographical Center, and the dividing lines
are West Main Street, running North and South, and Liberty
Street and Alachua Avenue, running East and West.
NOTE-"Ne," "Nw," "Se," or "Sw," following a name,
indicates the direction from the Courthouse in which the party
may be found.

We Are Loafing"

Because It Pays
We have been "loafing" for the
past eighteen years to meet the de-
mand of a bread-consuming public,
and so successful have been our
efforts that we have grown to a
modern, up-to-date establishment,
where more BREAD, CAKES and
PIES are turned out daily than in
any other bakery in the interior of
Florida.
There's a Reason
For this, which will be easily ex-

customers PURE MATERIAL is
bound to produce PURE GOODS.
That's the secret. Let us put you

GAINESVILLE'S ONLY

Modern Tailoring Establishment
THE PLACE OF SATISFACTION
Merchant Tailored Clothes Are Cheaper
Not only because the best is always the cheapest, but
also because clothes made by a good merchant tailor
ACTUALLY cost less by length of good wear.
Worn the year round, good suits made to order mean
less expenditure than machine-made clothes. Yet every
minute of that year you'll be well dressed.

Desire For Liquor

Ends in Three Days

Wonderful Work in the Redemption of

Men at Jacksonville's Neal

Institute.

There is no longer any reason for men and women to suffer the pic-
tured torments of Hades in their earnest efforts to stop drinking. The most
marvelous agency in the sure, easy and quick redemption from the liquor
habit is the nationally known Neal Treatment.
Three days of the Neal Treatment are all-sufficient to rid any drinker of
all craving desire for alcoholic drink.
The idea that one who for years has been yielding to a growing craving
for liquor can, in three days, change that desire for aversion to all alcoholic
drinks, savors of fiction.
There's no fiction about it, but glorious fact carrying with it happy re-
lease from bondage for thousands of men who are classed as "nervous
drinkers."
The Neal Institute, o116 East Duval street, Jacksonville, is one of a great
chain of institutions of helpfulness. It has been the scene of some marvelous
redemptions. Business men who recognized the danger they were in have
been quickly changed from slaves of drink to masters of themselves.
Three days at the Neal Institute is the most profitable business investment
any drinking man can make, because it clears his brain, restores his nerves
and increases his business foresight and earning power.
Men who demand "b'racers" before breakfast and at increasing intervals
the rest of the day until "night-cap" time, have at the end of three days'
treatment, left the Neal Institute with all desire for drink gone.
The Neal Treatment consists of the administration by regular physicians,
who are in constant attendance, of a perefctly harmless vegetable remedy
taken internally, with positively no hypodermic injections.
The Neal Treatment neutralizes and eliminates all the stored-up alcoholic
poisoning in the system. When this is done, the drinker is in the same
mental and physical condition that he was before he ever had a drink, for
it is the stored-up alcoholic poison in the system that causes this appetite, and
when once the alcoholic poison is eliminated the appetite is also eliminated.
Satisfaction is guaranteed or no money paid. Home Treatment can be
given to those who prefer it.
At the Neal Institute on Duval street guests enjoy all the comforts and
privacy of home, club or hotel. Names are never divulged.
If you have a friend who drinks to excess and you would like to help
save him from the drink habit, write, wire or phone the Neal Institute, 1016
East Duval street, Jacksonville. Open day and night
To reach the Institute by car line, take any Fairfield or Florida avenue
car to Duval street, walk one-half block west, and you will see the sign on
front of building, "Neal Institute."
Write for booklet-"THE NEAL WAY"-and other information.
