INTRODUCTION

"You write faster than I can read."
--Letter from author Charles Williams
to John D. MacDonald

THE JDM MASTER CHECKLIST, prepared by Len and June Moffatt, appeared in 1969.
It was, and remains, the essential base for this bibliography, particularly for
the magazine materials. Many additions have been made, in part because JDM has
since that date published fourteen new books (a fifteenth will appear in the
Spring of 1981), nine short stories, and at least ten non-fiction essays and
book reviews. He is, as always, even now working on more books, and, at this
writing, at least twenty-six additional titles are contracted for by foreign
publishers. Thus, although this work is as current as possible, even this edi-
tion will have a measure of obsolescence.
Changes have also been made in format; a chronology and additional checklists
have been provided and a wide variety of biographical materials and critical
essays are listed for the first time.

U.F. COLLECTION. The prime source for additional information in this volume
lies in the John D. MacDonald Collection (hereafter The Collection) housed in
the Rare Books and Manuscripts Department of the University of Florida Libraries,
Gainesville, Florida. (Our debt to the Department for its cooperation is pro-
found.) Here, for nearly thirty years JDM has deposited his original manu-
scripts, a vast correspondence, research and personal notes, copies of his books,
press clippings, and a wide assortment of memorabilia. The Collection is an
immense, fascinating, and uniquely valuable research tool. The Department has
also obtained most of the JDM short stories in their original pulp or other mag-
azine form and is hoping to amass a complete set.

BIOGRAPHY. The biographical materials in Section VII have not previously been
compiled. The Biographical Sketch (VII-A), reprinted from MD magazine, sum-
marizes much about JDM and his work. THE HOUSE GUESTS (1964) is as close as
JDM has come to an autobiography; and, from all indications, it is unlikely to
be followed by another. The many biographical articles listed in Section VII-B
also supplement THE HOUSE GUESTS. They provide some details about the author's
life; and, until MacDonald gives us more directly, or until more is extrapolated
from his writings by the reader or biographer, they must suffice. Many items
were omitted if they duplicated information available in those which are in-
cluded.

NON-FICTION. Section V separates the MacDonald non-fiction materials into dis-
tinct groups. These items are scattered through The Collection, which is prob-
ably the only source for many of them: speeches, early, non-professional writ-
ings, and letters to the editor. A checklist of the latter includes all those
which have appeared in print. Carbon copies of others are found in The Col-
lection, but whether they were printed could not be established. The subject
matter of the published letters is largely local and county affairs, but many
concern national and world politics, economics, ecology, and a host of other
matters which indicate JDM's wide-ranging interests.

* THE ART OF WRITING. From the earliest days of his writing career, JDM has
shared his insights regarding his profession with authors, aspiring authors,
high school and college students, and mere curiosity seekers. His patience
with even the most pedestrian queries is found in The Collection in letter
after letter of painstaking, objective criticism and advice. These unpublished
letters are not listed in this Bibliography.

INTRODUCTION

Included, however, in the Non-Fiction Section (Section V) are references to
every published MacDonald article, as well as to speeches, interviews and public
appearances, in which he has discussed the writing craft. Newspaper clippings
and occasional quotes therein are all that remain of most of the interviews and
public appearances, but the few exceptions (of which transcriptions are avail-
able in The Collection) are notable for their substance. On the other hand,
drafts of most of his speeches are found in The Collection and are a valuable
supplement to the published writings on the same subject.

* ADAPTATIONS. Section VI accumulates, also for the first time, all known in-
formation about motion picture, television, and radio adaptations of JDM's work.
The information sources for radio and the early years of television have to date
been found inadequate to identify the stories other than shown in this Section.
It is known that at least as early as 1954 JDM had twenty-three television cred-
its, and four more within a short time thereafter.
JDM has said he does not believe that the Travis McGee character could trans-
late well to the television medium, and he has refused to allow it to be sold
for that purpose. In 1977 the motion picture rights to all the McGees (except
DARKER THAN AMBER, which did reach the screen in 1970) were bought by CBS-Warner
Bros., and scripts are currently being written; the actual production date of any
is uncertain.

* TRANSLATIONS. The Foreign Language Section (II-E&F) has been very considerably
expanded over the 1969 Checklist. The reprints of MacDonald books offer a fas-
cinating look into the strange world of the translator. The Busted Flush trans-
lates in Dutch to "De Blufpoker" and in German to "Pik-As"; in Italian and Ger-
man Orange is changed to Green; in German Copper is changed to Black, and Scar-
let to Dirty Gray; in Norwegian Amber changed to Yellow, Yellow to Green, and
Brown to Gray. In Finnish and Swedish McGee's colors vanish, and instead each
title has the word "Danger" or "Dangerous." Translations have now been found
in eighteen languages; the title most often translated (A PURPLE PLACE FOR
DYING) has appeared in fifteen of those. As many as forty-four titles have
been translated into a single language (German). And for visual delight, one
finds JDM's name in Greek appearing:
TZON MAKNTONAANT.
* CRITICISM. The critical essays and book reviews in Section VIII are not
intended to be all-inclusive. Materials were omitted from the listing if
they were of no significant content or length. It will be noted how sparse
are the reviews of those JDM books which appeared first in paperback. This
can be attributed in part to the practice of many reviewers to ignore paper-
back originals on the assumption that the absence of a hard cover indicates
a lack of serious intent or quality.

* THE JDM BIBLIOPHILE. The final section (VIII-C) lists the publication dates
of the JDM Bibliophile, one of the finest sources of information and crit-
icism about MacDonald and his work. This informal, but well-established,
publication was issued, more or less semi-annually, by Len & June Moffatt
from March 1965 through May 1978, at which point the work was assumed by
Professor Edgar Hirshberg of the University of South Florida. The critical
analyses found in this publication often match the quality found in profes-
sional reviews, as well they might since they come from a readership that in-
cludes writers, editors, and serious students of the JDM craft, such as Poul
Anderson, William Nolan, Robert Briney, Dean A. Grennell, Harry Warner, Jr.,
Robert Turner, Knox Burger, and Francis Nevins, Jr., to name a few. The
quality of the contributions to the Bibliophiles, devoted almost entirely to
the work of MacDonald, provides much insight into reader response to that
work.

INTRODUCTION

* PUBLISHING HISTORY. This section provides a partial history of the numerous
printings through which all but five of JDM's books have run. Of those five,
I COULD GO ON SINGING had only one paperback printing and WEEP FOR ME only two;
at JDM's request these have had no additional printings. NO DEADLY DRUG ap-
peared in one hardcover print; THE HOUSE GUESTS in one hard and one paperback
printing. All other JDM titles have had at least four printings in paperback
and, at this date, A DEADLY SHADE OF GOLD and PALE GRAY FOR GUILT have each
gone through twenty-eight printings. Since a single paperback printing may be
for as few as 5,000 copies or as many as 1,250,000 (as in the case of the first
print of THE EMPTY COPPER SEA) the number of printings is not, of itself, indi-
cative of the total printed or sold.

*

Photocopies of everything published in periodical form by JDM have been
collated by the undersigned (using the absolutely indispensable Moffatt Check-
list). These extend through twenty chronological loose-leaf volumes-well over
5000 pages-and give some physical appreciation of the sheer mass of JDM's
writings. The University of Florida will duplicate this collation, when man-
power and time permit, and the copies will be available to researchers.

*

Many kinds of help have been given to us in preparing this Bibliography/
Biography (and to the Moffatts in supplementing and correcting the Master Check-
list since 1969). On the following page we list those we can remember. But we
owe a special debt to:
SAM GOWAN, Assistant Director for Special Resources, University
of Florida Libraries, who provided inspiration, stimulation,
and publishing funds; and, most especially,
CARMEN WILLIAMS, Library Assistant, Department of Rare Books & Manuscripts,
University of Florida Libraries, who typed and retyped the manu-
script, and whose extraordinary devotion to detail and research
(especially with the Translations Section) eliminated our errors
and supplemented our efforts at every turn.

SECTION II

C. Publishing History of American Editions

EXPLANATORY NOTES:

Titles of books are arranged alphabetically. The first line beneath the title shows the
original place of publication, original publisher, and year of the first printing.

Following each citation are details of the Publishing History for each publisher:
1. the date of first printing;
2. the number of interim paperback printings, if any, shown as (for example) "...2-10...";
or, the number of HARDCOVER printings to date, if more than one, immediately following
the publisher's name, shown as (for example) "<5>";
3. the date of the most recent printing as of November 1980;
4. the "Identifying Number," which is the Publisher's Book Number, the ISBN, or, if
neither is used, the Library of Congress card number, as "[53-0000]";
5. the price, if known, of the first and latest printings.

Paperback publishers are indicated by lower case.
Hardcover publishers are indicated by UPPER CASE.

All paperbacks now in print are published by Fawcett. As of 1981 Harper & Row will
publish the HARDCOVER editions (other than "book club" editions) having acquired the Lippin-
cott and Lippincott & Crowell imprints.

The last page of this Section lists the full name and current address of each JDM pub-
lisher in America.

A checklist of special editions for the blind or visually handicapped is found on page 38.

This Section will aid in determining whether any specific JDM book is a
first edition or printing. Some of the information is found only in the files
of Fawcett, (which cooperated fully in this research) and not in the books
themselves. Publishers-including Fawcett and Dell-often have merely shown
the original copyright date in subsequent printings, thus making difficult the
identification of the actual date of a later printing or edition. Fortunately,
this uncertainty will be avoided in the future because of the following devel-
opments:

Many publishers, including Fawcett and Lippincott (now Harper & Row), now
have a uniform "printing" number system. This number, to designate the "print-
ing" of a specific book, is the smallest in a series of numbers in a sequence
found on the reverse of the title page, usually at the bottom. An example
might be:
13 12 11 10 9 8 7 6
In such case, the book will be the 6th printing of the title. A printing
refers to all copies of a book printed at one time without removing the type or
plates from the press.

Furthermore, most publishers have also adopted the International Standard
Book Number (ISBN) system to identify each edition of a title. An edition

II-C. PUBLISHING HISTORY OF AMERICAN EDITIONS

refers to all printings from a single type setting, and usually without a
change in the cover. (Fawcett's practices in this connection are occasionally
different, and covers may change although the edition number may remain the
same. In these cases, however, the printing number does change.) The ISBN
number is a ten-digit number which identifies the language, the publisher, and
the title. In Fawcett's case the ten digits always begin with "0 449."

These current usages should help to eliminate most of the confusion that
formerly made edition and printing number identification difficult.
