The yachting season has opened November there were 37.
and many fine motor yachts have al-
ready arrived at Miami, and many
others are en route. Last year was a
successful one, but this winter the
outlook is for an even better season,
because, although the war is still on,
business is generally better this year
than a year ago.
Beaufort reports more pleasure
. ". boats passing that point for Miami
than ever before-the last week in
Miami is conceded to be the motor
boat center of the South, and is a
rendezvous unsurpassed, having every
facility and convenience easily acces-
sible. One of the principal attrac-
tions, of course, is the Annual Re-
gatta, the first, last winter, being a
decided success. The second will be
held on the Alton Beach course, Feb-
ruary 19, 21 and 22, and the interest
e klrady -is unusual.., Thea fastest
speed boats in America will partici-
pate. The Regatta Committee an-
nounces a number of new and fast
cruisers will make the events for the
larger boats very classy and enjoy-
able. There will be three classes,
scoring in each class being by the,
point system-hydroplanes, express
cruisers, and displacement boats. Carl
G. Fisher is chairman of the commit-
tee and will furnish complete infor-
mation. Handsome cups and trophies
will be contested for, becoming the
permanent property of the winner.

Miami's claim to the best all-year-
round-climate in the United States is
not merely a matter of opinion. It is
borne out by a comparison of the
records of the Miami station of the
United States Weather Bureau with
the figures compiled by similar bu-
reaus elsewhere. The recent rapid
growth of Miami, which has increased
In population from 5,471 in 1910 to
19,013 at the present time is very
largely due to the mild, equable cli-
matic conditions of the city.
Two of the cities of this country
which have been most favorably
known through their climate are Los
Angeles and San Diego. The follow-

The climatic summary for Miami
for the year 1914, prepared by the
government weather bureau, and ob-
tainable from the Miami Chamber of
Commerce gives some additional in-
formation of interest. Those plan-
ning to make their home in a city
where climatic conditions are moder-
ate and enjoyable the year round will
be interested in knowing that Miami's
maximum temperature in 1914 was
only 92 degrees (July 5th). Its mini-
mum temperature, 36 degrees (March
3d and Nov. 21st). -There was only
one day when the thermometer did
not rise over 60 degrees and there
were only eight days, two in June and
six in July, when it reached 90 de-

total rainfall was 46.56 inches, divided

The avocado, or alligator pear, is
one of the most valuable fruits grown
and will in time become one of the
most important market fruits of this
country. Dade County is fortunate
in being one of the few areas in the
United States where the avocado can
The avocado is not a fruit in the
ordinary sense. It ranks with eggs
and milk in its ability to sustain life
without anything else except water.
It is the most complete natural
product of the vegetable kingdom, re-
peated analyses of its food value
showing that its edible portion con-
tains from two to four per cent
of protein, from ten to thirty-
four per cent of fat and as much
as seven per cent of carbo-hy-
drates. The total food value of
the avocado has been estimated at
1758 calories per pound of edible por-
tion and since 2200 calories is the
amount needed to sustain normal en-
ergy in the average person for a
twenty-four hour period, the high food
value of the avocado is evident.
The season of the avocado in Flor-
ida begins in July and we have seed-
ling fruits during the months of July,
August and September. Other trop-
ical sections are marketing avocadoes
at the same time, so that the northern
markets take avocadoes at moderate
prices until the bulk of this seedling
crop from the West Indies has been
disposed of. As the season for seed-
lings ends the budded Trapp avocado
is the only one left to supply the mar-
kets during the greater part of Octo-
ber, November and December. The
market rises steadily from Septemoer
until Christmas, by which time the
last Trapps have been marketed. In
mid-season pears ordinarily bring at
least five and ten cents apiece, locall--
depending upon quality, but fancy
Trapps never sell for less than $2.00
ped dozen, and this price increases
rapidly as the season advances.
The reason for such prices as these
is found not only in the increasing de-
mand, but also in the very limited sup-
ply of this fruit. There are several
reasons for this limited supply, due to
the nature of the tree. In the first
place it is very sensitive to cold. All
commercial varieties of the fruit now
grown here are tender enough so that
a temperature of 32 degrees will seri-
ously injure a growing tree. For this
reason it is impossible that it can ever
be widely grown in the United States.
Judged by climatic conditions, Dade
County, Florida, is the only section of
the mainland which has a climate per-
fectly suited to bring the avocado to
maturity. While apples can be grown
in practically every state in the union
and even grapefruit is planted in at
least a part of seven states, the
growth of avocadoes in the United
States proper, except for some small
sheltered spots, seems limited to the
highland of the southern tip of Flor-
It is true that the avocado is ex-
tensively grown in all our neighboring
tropical countries to the south, but
each of these other countries is at a
serious disadvantage in the shipment
of the fruit. The avocado is a product
which must be handled very carefully
and brought to the ultimate consumer
in a short space of time. Where
southern Florida is within three days'
time of sixty million people, the West
Indian grower must count on a week
or more in the majority of cases, to
get his fruit to New York, and have
it re-shipped to inland points.
While the acreage of avocadoes in
Dade County is steadily increasing, at
the same time the national popularity
of this valuable fruit is also becoming
much larger. With Dade County's
special advantages as the natural
home of the avocado and its superior-
ity with regard to transportation,
there is no doubt that avocado grow-
ing will always be a highly profitable
industry in this section.

Miami has an unusually large num-
ber of public improvements for a city
of its size. A total of 47.5 miles of
paved streets, 31.7 miles of sewers, 1
mile of high pressure mains and 31.7
miles of cement sidewalks is already
built. Seven miles of paving, 5 miles
of sewers and several miles of side-
walks will be constructed in the near
future. The city hall, fire stations and
equipment and city incinerator cost
over $115,000. The new city hospital,
costing $115,000, will be built during
the coming year.
