MOOTH highways wind between walls of emerald green flecked with
golden sunshine. Ahead are the changing glories of the clouds,
the quiet beauty of the open sea-the lovely city-HOMOSASSA.

ALL and white, straight toward the sky, a pillar of stone that
was once the chimney of Yulee's cane mill stands in a
wonderful semi-tropical forest at the source of the Homosassa
River in Florida. Linking past with present, it spans seventy-six
years that have woven a rich background of fact and legend
around this beauty spot of Florida.
Perhaps the glory of Homosassa goes back to earlier days-
back to the conquistadores of De Sota, Pinedo, Narvaez,
traversing the shores of Florida in their mad search for gold. Perhaps they
marvelled at the wonders of this silver river to the sea.
Later the picturesque Seminoles trod a beaten path to the cool, clear
waters at the river's source. Tiger Tail Isle bears witness to their last
chieftain's brave stand for freedom.
For years men have visioned the city that would some day transform this
ideal setting into life. General Joel Chamberlain saw it, planned its making;
Grover Cleveland platted out its site; Henry B. Plant, empire and railroad
builder of the East Coast, dreamed vast projects-before them all came
David Yulee, who foresaw the great city that must rise here.
United States Senator, framer and signer of the state constitution, Yulee
was one of Florida's great pioneers. And with his family and slaves in I85o
he came to Homosassa as the choicest spot in all the land.
Yulee's immense sugar plantation grew out of the clearings he made in
the forest, smoke poured from the massive chimney of his mill, and a great
plantation home rose on Tiger Tail Island. Homosassa resounded with
spirit and life; hoop-skirted belles in crinoline danced Virginia reels and
polkas with homespun-clad young blades, comely matrons gathered on the
broad piazzas and courtly gentlemen settled matters of the state. Homo-
sassa became a social citadel for the chivalry of the Old South.
Then North and South clashed, and Federal soldiers, invading this peace-

ful land, sought state papers hidden here. The slaves were scattered, man-
sion and mill reduced to ruins, the great plantation abandoned to its fate.
Today Nature has completely reforested the entire plantation with a wealth
of hard-wood trees.
Years passed and Homosassa became a sportsman's paradise. Succeeding
generations knew its fame--scholars and scientists, diplomats, governors,
presidents and generals, gathered here-to fish and hunt, to yacht and swim-
to revel in its quiet beauties-and to prophesy its future. But Homosassa
waited.
Come to Homosassa, the beautiful. Sail up from Shell Isle at the mouth,
past placid bays and dreamy islands without number, past richly forested
banks carpeted with flowers, through narrow Hell Gate into the rainbow-
tinted basin of Crystal Pool.
Plunge through the gorgeous woods, past magnificent cypress and pine,
red cedar and colorful palms; past pink flaming bushes and purple wisteria,
under lacey waves of Spanish moss, with brilliantly plumaged birds over-
head-plaintive whippoorwill, mocking bird, snowy heron, pink curlew-
past creamy magnolia and blue iris, wild orchids, white lily, pools of
hyacinth-until, through the holly, yupon and cedar trees, a lone white
shaft in sharp outline against green masses, arrests your eye.
Blanched and time-worn it stands, this old mill chimney-straight toward
the sky-sentinel to the past and present-to the dream of David Yulee and
Grover Cleveland. For just beyond is Homosassa-a City in the Building.

HATEVER the picture you hol of Florida, Homosassa will
surpass it. As a land of gorgeous color, as a land of sport and
play, as a land teeming with fertility, Homosassa exceeds your
greatest expectations.
For here is a New City-builling in its entirety on a site
long famous as the logical location of a metropolis. A region
of indescribable charm, protected by miles of rest and plain, and connect-
ed by a beautiful river to the Gulf; with mil climate averaging 70 degrees
the year around; rich, productive soil; strateg- location and endless resort
facilities, Homosassa has natural advantages tht predestine its growth.
For generations men have visioned a city iere. And now it is in the
building on a plan worthy of its setting. Baci of it have been marshalled
great resources, its plans have been carefully lid and tested-its architects
gathered from the ranks of the nation. Led by lity Planners of international
reputation, Homosassa is building under the mGt modern and efficient meth-
ods known. Plans are laid for an ultimate cityof 100,000 people.

Electricity, sewage, water works and ice factory, paved streets, causeways,
parks, churches, schools, bank, newspaper, hotels and residences-all these and
more have risen and are rising magically at Homosassa--before the city is
opened to the country. Homosassa is building-a city complete.

Bursting forth from the limestone bed that is the foundation of the West
Coast, a natural spring forms the source of the Homosassa river. Here at its
headwaters is laid out the city, and from Crystal Pool, along the twelve
miles of winding river banks, parks, boulevards, recreational centers and
residential sites will extend to the blue Gulf.
The hundreds of tropical islands that dot the Homosassa and its tributary
bays and rivers are being transformed into homesites of unusual beauty.
Causeways of artistic design and motor boats will connect them with the
nearby shores and city.
Crystal Spring, source of the river, with a flow of 70,000 gallons per
minute, 176 feet deep and 1oo feet across, forms an immense natural lake and
almost exhaustless source of pure freestone water. Beautiful parks and
boulevards along the shores will make it the center of the city's playground
and recreational system.
All the beauties of Homosassa are being preserved even as they are con-
verted to best serve the city and its people.

Centuries of rich humus accumulating layer by layer have formed the
famous Hammock lands of Florida. Built up on the foundation of porous
limestone that supplies essential phosphates, with ample rainfall well dis-
tributed through the growing seasons and natural drainage through the
porous rock and numerous rivers to the Gulf, the productivity of the soil
ranks with any area in the United States. Three, four and more vegetable
and field crops can be raised each year, and the bumper yields make agri-
culture, horticulture and trucking an extraordinary source of prosperity.
With an almost exhaustless source of lumber and lumber-products in the
dense nearby forests, with game abounding on every hand, and lakes and
rivers teeming with fish, Homosassa has a background of certain and con-
tinued prosperity.

Long known for its famous Ozello and Homosassa varieties of oranges,
Citrus County is widely recognized as one of the great citrus-producing
areas of the state.
The range of its products includes oranges, grapefruit and avocados
(alligator pears), clovers and alfalfa, potatoes, corn, peanuts, grapes, sugar
cane-an almost endless diversity. State and Federal experts are steadily

extending the range of production, and improved methods of growing,
shipping and' marketing are reflected in the growing prosperity of Citrus
County.
The quality of its products ranks high, and Citrus County has taken\first
prizes at the Florida State Fair. A fertile and thriving region, the richlsoils
offer attractive opportunity for profitable returns to farmer, vegetable
grower, horticulturist and stock raiser.
New railroads and highways afford unrivalled shipping facilities to new
and wider markets, and the products of the back country and the Gulf form
a permanent, increasingly prosperous support to the city of Homosassa.

Situated at the narrowest point of the Peninsula section of Florida, acces-
sible to the thickly settled Tampa Bay District and the centralportion of the
State, Homosassa's strategic location could not possibly be improved upon.
The cool breezes from the Atlantic and the warm waters of the Gulf Stream
combine to produce a mild beneficent climate the year around.
Sixty-four miles south is Tampa, the phenomenally-growing industrial city
of the State. In this section cities are doubling in size almost every year, and
their limits are being constantly widened to care for their increasing popu-
lation of permanent residents. St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Dunedin, Tarpon
Springs, New Port Richey, and Brooksville are developing at a tremendous
pace, and Homosassa is located where all of this influx of wealth and
population lead directly to its substantial growth.

Today Homosassa has direct rail connections through Jacksonville to the
entire Atlantic Seaboard and Northeastern States.
With the construction of the link now being built between Monticello
and Perry, Florida, by the Atlantic Coast Line, it will have through rail
service via Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama, to Chicago, St. Louis,
and the Central West. Another trunk line railway has plans perfected for
the construction of a railroad paralleling the Gulf Coast Highway, giving
still another outlet into the great territory of the Central West. Few
cities in Florida enjoy such through transportation advantages.
With the saving of 200 miles distance between Chicago and Homosassa,
the Tampa Bay district, and the lower East Coast, seven hours saving in
passenger time and twelve hours in the dispatch of citrus fruits and perish-
able products over these new through lines, the entire West Coast-and

Homosassa-should develop and grow more rapidly than any other section
of Florida.
In its miles of smooth highways, Florida is building one of its greatest
assets. New roads are under way all along the coast as never before, and
Homosassa is connected by a network of fine motor routes that will extend
through all the state.
The Gulf Coast Highway, already under construction, will open a mag-
nificent boulevard the entire length of the West Coast close to and paralleling
the Gulf. Direct route from the Middle West, it will bring thousands of
tourists and motorists to Homosassa.
Homosassa Boulevard, now being paved its entire length, crosses leading
highways north, east and south, including the paved road to Inverness.
State Highway No. 5, an air-line paved highway from the Tampa Bay
District to the Georgia line, which it is planned to widen to 80 feet and
illuminate electrically, gives Homosassa a direct route through Inverness,
Lake City and Atlanta to the North. Luxurious bus lines will soon connect
the city with important points throughout Florida.

Florida will expend during 1926, $11,000,000 in building roads-all of
"which is received from the tax on gasoline. In addition to the State High-
ways, Citrus and other counties have issued bonds for the purpose of build-
ing lateral roads to join the highways constructed by the State.
Citizens of Homosassa will never have high state taxes to pay to care for
interest on bonded indebtedness for the state owes nothing and has a surplus.
With the winding boulevards about the city and along the river, bays and
to the sea, there will be a wealth of picturesque trips and colorful scenes for
motorist and traveller to enjoy to the full.
Hardly a sport is indulged in anywhere on the globe, that does not find
here an improved environment and setting.
Roque, tennis, lawn bowls, archery, golfing on superb links, bathing in
the buoyant sea, yachting, hydroplaning, exploration hikes-a thousand
activities welcome you to Homosassa.
Baseball is played every day in the year, and overtures are now being
made to several of the major league teams to do their Spring training here.
There are some blood-tingling sports that are to be found nowhere in
such a superlative degree as in this section. The mighty monarch of all the
waters, the Tarpon, considers Homosassa as his exclusive playground, and
at times the waters are iridescent with the sheen reflected from his silver
scales. The fighting black bass is here in his native element, and responds
to fly or minnow with a zest that will fire your blood. The crevallo, that
averages 30 pounds, the racing red fish, croakers, sheephead, bluefish, and
an infinite variety of others await the angler's rod and reel.
- On the uplands coveys of quail and
Jdoves offer unMurpa-ed hunting, and

the Hammock abounds in wild turkeys, pheasants, coon, possum, deer, and
even an occasional bear.
Mallard, teal, brant and other ducks rise in clouds before the coming
motor boats, and the limit can be bagged from a blind in a few hours, and
even the rapidly vanishing wild geese are found in this sportsmen's paradise.

The need that David Yulee, General Chamberlain, Grover Cleveland, and
a host of farsighted men saw clearly and logically is at last on the way to
complete realization.
A clean, modern, scientifically constructed city is being built on this rich
hammock that forms the site for an all year as well as winter season metropolis.
Never before has the vision of great city planners been realized in such
fashion.
For months engineers and planners, under the personal supervision of a
firm of nationally known city planners, have been drafting and platting out
the city of Homosassa.
Since June, great engineering projects have been under way, blasting out
trees, grading and paving wide streets and sidewalks, installing machinery

, and equipment, building offices and warehouses, hotels and homes, trans-
forming the headwaters of the river into a scene of vast activity.
The city proper, laid out on the productive lands surrounding the spring,
is fast assuming definite form. Broad boulevards designed to care for every
possible traffic demand traverse the city, winding parkways lined with palms
lead past luxurious home sites, and twelve miles of river banks will be laid
out in parks, playgrounds and villa sites to the sea.
Business districts have been carefully zoned and restricted. Shops and
stores are grouped according to their respective activities; the architecture
of the world is being drawn from to create each distinctive unit of the city.
Bungalows, apartment hotels, residences are grouped in artistic conformity.
A comprehensive educational system closely conforming with the most
modern developments in higher education is being personally worked out
and installed by one of the country's foremost educators. Spiritual welfare
of the city is adequately provided for, and a great open air community forum
will be established and conducted by one of America's outstanding religious
leaders. In each phase of community life-music, art, drama, education,
winter chautauqua-all are provided for in the extensive program creating
this city.

Down to the last detail Homosassa follows the broadly conceived plan
of its builders. Splendid homes, modern hotels, thriving business districts,
beautiful schools and churches, sane building restrictions and zoning pro-
visions-it is a city built for home-loving, hospitable people-rich with
everything that will make life happier and more worth-while.
Its architecture will be Homosassa's architecture-taken from the best
of Old Spain, of Southern France, from Italian Renaissance and Moslem
Europe-its forms and fantasies softened, adapted to make the city a splendid
whole.
Your home in Homosassa need cost you no more than homes in any city-
$5,000 or $50,000, as you desire-but whatever its cost, it will be a part of
the beauty of Homosassa and subject to the approval of the architectural
board.

Primarily Homosassa is to be a city to live in. Sun and sea and river
combine to provide every diversion and pleasure of out-of-door activity.

Hunting. fishing, exploring the
Hammock, boating among the
thousand colorful islands or motor-
ing down smooth white highways.
new scenes and new experiences
greet you at every turn.

Hospitality and friendliness are to rule in this southern city. Homosassa
is to be a city of refinement. On the golf links or in the prosperous business
district you will be glad to acknowledge the greeting of your neighbor.
Fresh air and sunshine, pure water and every modern comfort and recrea-
tion-these are pleasures of owning a home in Homosassa. And living costs
are as moderate as in like communities anywhere.

The rich beauty of Homosassa's tropical foliage provides a lovely back-
ground for the varied homes of the city. Set on a gem of an island of the
river or bays, blending into the verdure of the forest crowned banks, facing
the broad, palm-lined avenues or half-hidden in brilliant shrubbery in the
residential districts of the city-each home setting has a distinction and a
charm that is its own.

Homosassa has openings in many lines of enterprise to those who seek a
broader field for their ability and activities. Merchants, bankers, investors,
building contractors, wood manufacturers, will find unusual opportunities
available here. There is need at once for a laundry, millinery shop, restau-
rants, haberdashery-all kinds of commercial enterprises. Thousands of

adjacent acres are waiting to repay the truck farmer, horticulturist, dairy-
man and stock raiser with profitable returns. Commercial fishing and
oyster raising can quickly and successfully be developed, too.
Homebuilders, commercial and agricultural workers-all can share in the
growing enterprise of Homosassa. It opens a wide door of opportunity to
participate in Florida's permanent prosperity.

That is the story of Homosassa in the making. What is the Homosassa
of fact? That, too, is compelling-for Homosassa-in the building-is
achieving its destiny in gigantic strides.
Since June, hundreds of men, tons of materials and supplies, great lumber-
ing trucks and puffing tractors have been transforming the forests into a
scene of endless activity.
Homosassa Boulevard, nine miles long, is rapidly being curbed and paved,
artistic lighting standards installed, and beautiful parkways laid out its
length. Second longest White Way in America, early in 1926 it will be
complete-the brilliantly lighted concourse of the city.
Business streets are paved, sidewalks installed, and already a large portion
of the business district stands completed. The Adelphi Theatre has opened
its doors. The Rendezvous, nationally famous sportsman's hotel, has
greatly enlarged its accommodations. The new Tiger Tail Tavern, a modern
commodious hostelry, opened for business December i5th. The magnificent
Homosassa Hotel, with 200 rooms, and every modern convenience, will
formally open its door January 15th. Two additional hotels are undergoing
organization and will soon be building.
The Homosassa Bank & Trust Co., with a paid-in capital of $75,000 and
surplus of $25,000, is building a $25,000 bank and office building; the first
issues of the Homosassa Herald are off the press and construction on a $25,ooo
newspaper hone is soon to be started; a $ioo, ooo store and office building,
a $5o,ooo display room and garage, a three-story business building,
a wholesale paint and glass building, and smaller stores and shops-groceries,
bakeries, meat markets, confectioneries, etc.-are completed or well under
way. New construction projects are announced and undertaken every day,
and the business district is outstripping the greatest expectations.
The $ioo, ooo city waterworks and ice plant will soon be operating,
transmission lines from the hydro-electric plant built with generating capacity
capable of immediately serving a city of 30,000 people are assured by January
i5th, telephones are rapidly being installed in offices and residences, and a
complete sewage and disposal plant is under construction.

--------- - ---r:__I--^ ^_

SIn the residential zones -contracts for numerous homes have been placed-
-,many completed and occupied. Materials and labor for many more, to be
erected immediately, are at hand, and dozens of contracts are ready to be let.
Seven hundred Villa Sites have been laid out along the two miles of White
Way from the Country Club to the city, and homes ranging in cost from
$5,000 to $ioo, ooo will soon be under way in that section.
Plazas, parks, recreational areas and boulevards are being paved and
beautified, and landscape artists are working on apartment hotel and resi-
dential sites as rapidly as possible.
Three country clubs have had plans drawn-one, the Homosassa Country
Club, has its beautiful Spanish-type clubhouse rushing to completion. Two
stories in height, with broad galleries, dining room and grill, ample lounges,
lockers and shower rooms, outdoor plunge and swimming pool, it will rank
with any in the country. The golf links, laid out by Harry S. Corliss, for
twenty-five years professional at Flossmoor Club, Chicago, will provide one
of the finest i8-hole medal play courses in America.
Homosassa is in the building. More than 3,000 people are behind it,
representing a combined wealth of over $10o,ooo,ooo. The Florida West
Coast Development Company (owning 1,200,000 acres of West Coast land),
the Homosassa Development Corporation, and the Homosassa Trust and
