on the System of Orthography
followed in the Handbook.
1.--In Bantu h is not a root Letter. Whenever found,
tit takes the place of some disappeared consonant.
Thus, in Manyika, h takes the place of p, t, k, after n,
-or m. Examples: m'hepo (Sena: m'pepo); mt'huru (Sena:
m'puru); mu nhu (Sena: mu ntu); tunhidza (Tete: tunt 'a);
n'hava (same root as chi tava); n'hemo (same root as chi
.temo); huni, huIk (Sena: n'kuni, n'kuku). &c.
In pure Karanga (central Mashonaland), there is no
trace of aspirate in those cases. We simply write there-
fore: mu nu, m'epo, m'uru, tunida, n'ava, n'emo. We
keep however the h. although without aspiration (compare
:the English: hour, honour, heir, &c.) at the beginning of
a word, or between two vowels, in order to prevent two
distinct syllables from coalescing into one. The h then
indicates a mere hiatus as does the iso called French I
aspirate in, for instance, le hibou, not l'hibou; la haie,
not l'haie.
Thus we write ru hoko, "arm", not rwoko: chi hururo,
"a boring tool", not ch'ururo; teherera (from teverera)
"listen, obey", not terera, "pay tribute to or for; tohodya,
"imitate" from tovodza or tevedza (Tete: tovedza).
2.- As happens in these last two examples, the disapp-
eared consonant is mostly a v. In Ndau the disappear-
ance of the v is still more frequent. Thus the Ndau Ma-
nual published at Mt. Selinda writes: enga for venga, erenga
for verenga, ontora for vomora, ma ambo for ma vambo,
n' ee for n'zeve, tedxa for tevedza, "be obedient" (not tedza,
be slippery), roa-mbira for rova-mbira, roora (Zulu lobola),
nda a for nda va, ka iri for ka viri &c.
Some would represent that disappeared v (Zulu b) by a
,w. But,-apart from the fact that there is no sound of u
in the pronunciation, as shown by the Ndau spelling,-the
use of w in this case would clash with the 'genuine semi-
vowel w as found for instance in the passive ending wa,
& make it impossible to distinguish in writing between:
,roha "bewitch", & rowa, "be beaten"; suha or suva "yearn,
regret, (desiderare)" & suwa, "be desired, regretted." In-
stead of reheteka if you write reweteka, you would seem to
insinuate that the ending teka is affixed to the passive rewa
*.& not the active reva, which is incorrect. The same applies
;to rahura which comes from rava & not the passive rawa;

hence zwi rawe. Again in u sahi for u savi, "condiment"
& ma sawi, "wild ru kweza", there is a very marked
difference of pronunciation.
The mute h therefore seems to be the only available
symbol that will represent satisfactorily that indistinct &
variable element which, even in the same word, is some-
times a mere hiatus, & at other times seems to approach
to one or other of the semivowels w & y. (Compare mu
eha, sometimes pronounced mu eya, teha sometimes prono-
unced teya.)
3. As remarked before, the h at the beginning of a word
or between two vowels is not aspirated in pure Karanga.
There are however in Central & South Karanga, some reat
aspirates which, strange to say, are absent in Manyika.
a) After d, t, & r the sounds wa, we, wi, wo are
generally accompanied by that kind of aspirate which is
sometimes beard in the English word "whiskey". Hence
we write: tandwha, batwha, surwhe, mu rwhi, rwhara, rwho.
In Manyika those words are simpy: tandwa, batwa, surwe,.
mu rwi, rwara, rwo.
b.) After b & p & before u the w itself loses the
sound of u & becomes a mere aspirate equivalent to "gh"
after b & r, & "kh" after p & t. We represent by w that
peculiar transformation of the ordinary w. Thus: tambwa,.
rapwa, (passive of tamba, rapa); im bwa (im or mu bua,
in other Bantu languages); pwa, "dry up", (Tete pua);
utwu, urwu demonstrativess), tw-o, rwo, (disjunctive pro-
nouns) corresponding to the articles tu & ru. The posses-
sives twha, twhe, twho, rwha, rwhe, rwho keep the sound ofu.
4. The w is again used in conjunction with s & xg to
denote two peculiar sibilants, the first of which is half-way
between s & sh, & the second half-way between z &j (zh)..
Thus: swava,. zwara. No confusion need arise from that
use of the w, as there is no other sound of sw & xw in
the language. To keep however that sibilant distinct from
another w following, .we put a dash over the sw. Thus :
taswa, "ride", taswwha, 'be ridden", swiswa, "blacken",.
swiswwha, "be blackened."
5. The other semivowel, y is also sometimes accom-
panied by an aspirate in Karanga. After n & r the sound
of y still persists. Thus: nyhata, "be wet", dehenyha
"skull" (Victoria, dehenya); ryha (Gutu) "eat", foryha
ibidd). "tobacco". In Central Karanga ryh becomes dyh;
thus : chi kari, "a pot", chi kadyhana, "a little pot". But

there also the y of dyh & tyh loses its ordinary sound &
approaches more to j & sh as-in dyha "eat", tyha, "fear"
which are pronounced nearly like djgha, tshkha. These
words however are none others than the dya & tya of Sena
.& Tete: tyhora, "break" is likewise simply :tyora in those
languages. The Manyikas & the Karangas of Victoria have
adopted the Zulu dla, hla.
6, The compound consonants, or combinations of
consonants in the same syllable, that are given in the
Handbook, are the only ones to be found in the language,
and, in fact. the only ones compatible with the Karanga
laws of euphony, as set down & explained in the
