STATE OF FLORIDA STATE BOARD OF CONSERVATION DIVISION OF GEOLOGY FLORIDA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY Robert 0. Vernon, Director INFORMATION CIRCULAR NO. 40 MAPS SHOWING DEPTHS OF SELECTED LAKES IN FLORIDA By W. E. Kenner, Hydraulic Engineer Prepared by the UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY in cooperation with the TRUSTEES OF THE INTERNAL IMPROVEMENT FUND OF THE STATE OF FLORIDA TALLAHASSEE 1964 4-Co . AGRI- CULTURAC LIBRARY Completed manuscript received November 30, 1962 Printed by the Florida Geological Survey Tallahassee PREFACE In the past few years there has been a greatly increased awareness that Florida's lakes have contributed much to the development of the State and that they will have a direct influence on its future growth. Along with the increased awareness has come an increased need for take information. To help meet this need the Trustees of the Internal Improvement Fund have cooperated in studies to obtain lake information and to make the information available to all. This report is part of the work. It was prepared by the U. S. Geological Survey, Ocala, under the supervision of A. 0. Patterson, district engineer. Funds for its prep- aration, as well as the collection of field data, were furnished jointly by the Trustees and the U. S. Geological Survey. Publication costs have been borne by the Florida Geological Survey. The Soil Conservation Service, the Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, and the U. S. Army Engineer District, Jacksonville, have aided materially in the preparation of this report by furnishing depth data from their files. Their cooperation is acknowledged with appreciation. E. Kenner INTRODUCTION This report presents depth data for 73 lakes in Florida. These lakes lie in an area of the peninsular section extending from Clay County in the north to Highlands County in the south. Locations of the lakes are shown on three maps. Figure 1 shows lakes in Bradford, Clay, Alachua, Marion, and Putnam counties; fig- ure 2 shows lakes in Lake, Orange, Brevard, Osceola, and Indian River counties; and figure 3 shows lakes in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Polk, and Highlands counties. Table 1 lists the lakes by county. Depth information for the lakes is shown on maps (fig. 4-76) with contour lines and spot depths. Each map has a heavy dashed line en- compassing the lake. This is the "zero-depth" contour and is the datum to which the depths are referred. The elevation of this datum line, in feet above mean sea level (datum of 1929) is indicated on the map. The elevation of the datum line relative to maximum, minimum, and average lake stage is indicated in table 2. Depth information used in preparing the maps was obtained from several agencies. The Florida Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission furnished data for Lake Apopka, the Soil Conservation Service furnished data for four lakes in Highlands County, and the U. S. Army Engineer District, Jacksonville, furnished data for 28 lakes, principally in the Kissimmee and St. Johns River basins. Depth information for the re- maining 40 lakes was obtained by the U. S. Geological Survey. These were sounded with a sonic depth recorder carried in a 16-foot fibre- glass boat. Boat speed was approximately 6 miles per hour and the depth-recorder chart speed generally used was 1 inch per minute. Cali- bration tests indicated that recorded depths were accurate within 1 foot. edge holes were noted in mvanty of the suervyted lakie YThei were usually within 100 feet of shore and were relatively Simia Saoie, however, were as much as 30 feet deep. The delinhatiw n bf t)he hblit was outside the scope of this study band no attempt was made to obtain doaon them.
