Re- Canal Widenin Operations
WO Moretti -Harrison Joint Venture Contract.

WHAT Removal of 5 million cubic yards of non rocky overburden from area to be
widened in Bas Obispo-Las Cascadas Reaches. Work is being done using the
latest type (657) Caterpillar Scrapers with a heaped capacity of 44 cubic
yards. Contractor has 4 of these plus D-8 and D-9 Bulldozers, rippers,
etc., (can move over 30,000 cubic yards a day in dry season).
*EE The north end of 8 mile Gaillard Cut. Which runs south from Gamboa thru
the Continental Divide to Pedro Miguel Locks. All widening in this portion
and in the already widened rest of the Cut is being done on the West side.
The reason more favorable to pography and geologic stability.
WHEN Work in progress started January of this year and will probably be complete
in April '64*. he remaining 11- 12 million yards of rocky material will
be removed under another final contract now in preparation. It will be
taken to an area at the north end of Gatun Lake and used in a Dam which will
provide additional storage above the present 851+ level of Gatun Lakej.
WY Cut widening which involves increasing the prism of full depth Channel width
of the Canal from 300 to 500 feet required to increase Canal capacity be
enabling vessels to move more rapidly thru the Cut, This is achieved by or
reduction of number of clear cut type transits.
