BRUCE QUINN DIRECTOR
Bruce is a veteran director and has been involved with local community theatre for many years. His last production was an original Panamanian work by Dr. Rosa Maria Briton; Banquete de Despedida and he recently directed Re Encuentro Javierano at Atlapa and a program of religious music for the benefit of the "Civdadelo Jose, Maria Y Jesus" (Home for Abandoned Children Colon).
Bruce describes his varied career in local theatre: "My first show at the Theatre Guild was Kiss and Tell in 1954 as an actor. I have directed a number of shows at the Guild since 1963 my first, South Pacific with Don Musselman. My most recent productions were Nunsense (musical) and M Butterfly (drama). I have many favorites. Some are a little extra special because not only was the show a success, but I grew from the experience. Here at the Guild they include: Jaques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris, Amadeus, The Elephant Man, Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean, and Orphans. I am proud of Nunsense because it's the Guild's blockbuster a real record holder. South Pacific, because it was the Guild's first Broadway musical.
I particularly enjoy directing women. I guess that's why I like Jimmy Dean and Nunsense. Also, one of my favorites is The Women which I directed at the Teatro en Circulo. I want to direct Steel Magnolias, another female show. Paint Your Wagon, Brigadoon, Gypsy, M Butterfly, Charlie Brown, Brighton Beach, Cry of Players, Life with Father, Butterflies are Free, Picnic, Guys and Dolls, Hot L Baltimore, etc. each has a special significance for me. These are my family, they are my children.
My next projects (both in Spanish) are A Midsummer's Night Dream, at the National Theatre and Fiddler on the Roof at the Atlapa Convention Center. I am currently doing the set design for Maestra Vida by Ruben Blades for the Cupula Theatre. My hobbies are music and I like to play bridge when I have time. I really wanted to be a good golfer and I play at the piano (ask Melanie Bales).
I guess Ken Millard and I are the most senior continuously active hams at the Guild. I started in 1954. Ken earlier. When I started at the Guild, there was no air conditioning. The windows remained open during the show. "The Green Room" was a small back porch where we all sat clustered around the staircase awaiting the cue for our entrances. This shack has been a training center. For me, it's been a major part of my life. Toast the concept of the playhouse and those enterprising and daring people who laid the cornerstone of the playhouse. I wanted to do my part in carrying out their original idea".
