ONE BLOCK FROM R. DEPOT AND STEAMBOA I' LANDINGS.
Extract from letter of Geo. Peabody Russell, of England, March 3, 1876, to W. M. Nicholls, : --r i iI r -
I beg leave to say that after a tolerably extensive acquaincan....: ith ir;..
hotels of this country and Europe, we have never been more comfortably attended
to than during the past week at your hotel. Very truly yours,
GEO. PEABODY RUSSELL.
JACKSONVILLE, FLA., March 7th, 1876.
W. M. NICHOLLS-Dear Sir:
We found your Hotel here all you represented it to be when we met you
at Savannah, Ga. The table is truly the best we have found in Florida, and we
have been at all of the best I believe. You can rest assured we shall use our best
efforts to advance the Nicholls House to the notice of our friends.
WM. G. STAHLACEKER AND FRIENDS, New York City.
JACKSONVILLE, FLA., April 24th, 1877.
Whereas,
Business and other interests compel the undersigned to leave the South,
and thereby part with our very worthy friend, Col. W. M. NICHOLLS, proprietor
of the Nicholls House of this City, and believing as we do that he has done every-
thing we could desire to make our sojourn with him a pleasant one-
Therefore be it Resolved,
That it is with feelings of regret that we part with our worthy host, and
we shall look forward with delight to the time when we shall again be able to
assemble in this elegant parlor beneath his hospitable roof, and receive his genial,
whole souled greetings-
Resolved,
That we advise all people coming to Jacksonville to stop at the Nicholls
Hotel, and place themselves under his care, believing there is no place where they
can get better accommodations or kinder attention.

JACKSONVILLE STREET DIRECTORY.

GIVING the location of each street, and showing what other
streets and places run from or across it, with the number at
which they intersect.
From this list the location of any number on a street can be
easily ascertained, as, for instance, wishing to know at what
part of Ocean street No. 88 comes, you look at Ocean street
upon page 6, and find that W. Duval street runs front 79 and
W. Church street from 95, showing that 88 Ocean would come
ia. .iir, half way between W. Duval and W. Church streets.

which fill the racks above and adorn the long is another, at the forward part of the vessel, the
table, used as a dining table. The large lamps flooring of which is covered with an oil cloth re-

the tables, are of an entirely new pattern, the the cold striking the feet of any one who

might be seated on any of the sofas. In this
saloon P.re fourteen state rooms, fitted up in
many respects like those in'the other saloons,
and with accompanying conveniences.
Ascending to the deck, and going a little for-
ward of the funnel, the passenger finds what is
often esteemed a boon by gentlemen, namely, the
smoking room. This is neatly oilclothed, and all
the comforts necessary to such an apartment are
supplied. Here the lovers of a social game of
cards, chess, or other similar amusements can
pass the time while enjoying the pleasures of
their fragrant Havana.
A little further forward are located the deck
state rooms, all of which are very handsomely
fitted. These rooms are located on either side of
the vessel, so that the passenger can select, ac-
cording to hii own wishes, a room either to
"windward" or "leeward."
A little further forward, but immediately ad-
joining the deck state-rooms, is the captain's sa-
loon, which is an elegant apartment, fitted up
with a velvet-covered sofa and chair, (the latter
having a shifting back, so as to be used for either
sitting or reclining,) a handsome table, large
enough to spread charts upon, a well-fitted berth,
and last, though not least, a rich Wilton carpet.
This room may be classed as a parlor-like apart-
ment, and certainly Captain F. G. Mallory, that
well known seaman, deserves just such a saloon.
Having now described the vessel, it may be in-
teresting for passengers to know how long it
will take them to reach any given point by this
line. The trip between New York and Savan-
nah is accomplished in 60 hours; thence to Jack-
sonville, Fla., in 15 hours by rail, making only
75 hours from New York to Jacksonville. From
Savannah the passenger, who may be subject to
sea-sickness, can travel by the Inland Water
Route," strictly inland all the way. To give our

readers some idea of the time that will be re-
quiired to reach a given point by the Ocean Steam-
ship Company's Line, and its connecting steam-
ers on the Inland Water Route," we will take
the steamship which, like the City of Savannah,
leaves New York on Saturday. That steamship
reached Savannah in time to allow the pas~n-
gers an opportunity of looking around that City
before following the inland route. The connect-
ing steamer, the City of Bridgeton, left Savan-
nah on Tuesday evening, and arrived at Jackson-
ville on Wednesday evening. The steamer left
Jacksonville at 9 o'clock on Thursday morning,
and arrived at Tocoi, for St. Augustine, shortly
after noon on the same day, arriving at Palatka
on Thursday evening. The passengers had the
opportunity of enjoying themselves that night
on shore, and left the next morning for Sanford,
Mellonville and Enterprise, where they arrived
on Friday evening, after one of the most enjoy-
able water trips which could be desired passing
as it were, amid orange groves, and between banks
odoriferous with' the most beautiful and sweet
smelling of the many flowers which this "]and
of flowers" can produce. The steamer also
touched at all the intermediate landings, thus
enabling passengers, when they desired it, to
stop at other points than those especially named.
Through tickets can be obtained, or state-
rooms secured, on application, or by mail or tele-
gram to George Yonge, General Agent Ocean
Steamship Company, 409 Broadway, N. Y.
Through tickets also on sale from New York
to Nassau, N. P., and Havana, by the steamship
San Jacinto, which ship runs in connection with
the Ocean Steamship Company from Savannah,
leaving Savannah every other Tuesday, on
arrival of the steamship City of Macon from New
York.
