Quotations: by Code Report of all Coded Quotations by Code (plus Comments)HU: FocusGroupAnalysesCode: abroadQuotation Nr: 27 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no The biggest thing that scares me is if I get a stroke like what happened to my gramps. My family in Guatemala say that he died from a stroke in his sleep. I didn’t know him much since my parents moved here when I was a kid. I think I might have been 4 or 5 when he passed. So even though I look for things to lower my blood pr essure I also watch Yoga and fitness videos on YouTube. I have a smart TV so I can just search for things in my living room and do any of the exercises I see right then and thereCode: advantageQuotation Nr: 46 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I feel searching online helped me by giving me a clue of what the heck a meconium infection was. I think it helps to benefit some people by providing a foundation. Obviously you become an expert overnight but you have to start somewhere. Quotation Nr: 9 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Honestly at first when I searched just sore throat all I got was stuff on strep throat and cold and flu symptoms. When I searched sore throat and tooth pain that’s when I ran into what might be causing my throat to itch and hurt from time to time Quotation Nr: 37 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I’ll answer man. One advantage I can think of is the privacy you get from searching online. Quotation Nr: 39 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no One major thing the internet provides is a global community. Think about it a lady in India answered some girl’s question from here in the states. You get ideas and cures from all over the world. Page 1of 9 6

Quotation Nr: 4 6 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I don’t think the internet helps or crea tes a problem. The internet is just a tool. It’s if you choose to accept what you search as true and apply it to your life. That determines if what you search creates a problem. You would help that what you find is true. In my case, I had people telling me where to search.Code: adviceQuotation Nr: 5 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no The weird things is that it has been years since I’ve gotten nosebleeds. Recently they’ve come back out of nowhere and almost always in the morning when I’m getting ready for school. Sometimes it ’s embarrassing because it starts out of nowhere like when I’m at the pool with my buddies. They point and laugh and ask me if I sniff crack. Obvi ously I don’t do that crap. To get to the point…I tweeted a picture of my nosebleed on twitter and Facebook the other day and got a couple comments from some of my highschool friends on how they had the same thing happen to them. They told me to try some saline nose spray and to pu rchase a humidifier for my room. I was able to get the nose spray. The th ing really freaking works. I wanted to get a humidifier soon when I save up some cash. So the last time I went online for health information I didn’t search per se but rather posted a question and got some responses from my friends. Quotation Nr: 44 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no That’s true but some people have gone through stuff which gives them experience and helps them give advice to others. Look. I was getting nose bleeds almost every morning. Since I listened to my friend and bought nasal spray I rarely get them. So you don’t really need education to know some stuff.Code: Alternative to Dr.'s PrescriptionOne thing I wish got better is my Page 2of 9 6

Quotation Nr: 2 2 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no seizures. I want to get off of my medicine…I feel it makes me way too drowsy in the mornings. So I try to take it mostly at night even though the things I read online say I shouldn’t do that. Lately I’ve looked for different treatments to my seizures. I found some things on this web page called WebMD. The site has a bunch of links to everythingCode: anonymityQuotation Nr: 50 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I try to stay away from those sites. Lord Knows I don’t want people on my businessCode: Articles that relateQuotation Nr: 101 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no We look to see if there are any articles or sites that talk about mental disorders due to horrific accidentsCode: ask.comQuotation Nr: 2 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I don’t know much of it either…but it came up when I searched on yahoo and on ask.com.Code: Asperger syndromeQuotation Nr: 92 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Not everyone knows but my little sist er suffers from Asperger syndrome. It’s like autism. Just more difficult to deal with. Page 3of 9 6

Code: Back painQuotation Nr: 58 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Like home remedies, may be for strained muscles or back pain.Code: bettermedicine.comQuotation Nr: 3 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Early last week I had crazy tooth pain. So I decided to get on Facebook to see what others would say. I posted to see if people have ever had pain on their canine tooth and if it was wort h going to the dentist. Like 3 people commented. So that didn’t help much. I also looked on forums…one of them was bettermedicine.com…I can’t really remember the other one. I found that the canines are supposed to be one the strongest teeth in our mouths. If you have pain there it usually means it’s something serious. So I decided to make an appointment with my dentist. Let me see…No I didn’t find the search difficult.Code: BingQuotation Nr: 65 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no For any little thing... Google, Bing, Yahoo, I search them allCode: blogsQuotation Nr: 3 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Some lady in India responded to some question this girl asked about vomiting because of Pepto Bismol. She said to mix some boiled figs, milk and honey together. I wa nt to try tonight. I’ve been waiting for after chapter and this meeting to buy some figs from Publix on my way home. I hope it helps. Code: Blood pressure issuesQuotation Nr: 12 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I have had high blood pressure problems for a while now. People that know me think it’s because I can’t control my anger. I don’t believe ‘em. Usually when I get online I look for sugges tions on lowering blood pressure. I already take meta…meto…prolal something like that. It barely helps.Code: Blood sugar levelsQuotation Nr: 69 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I know sites like the CDC gives good advice with things like controlling blood sugar levels and other subjects related to diabetes that my parents usually ask me to look forCode: Body buildingQuotation Nr: 11 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no For true boy. I’m trying to get dieseled I searched at the computer lab just now for a new protein shake I wanna try. I gots to say off that whey protein though. That thing makes you gassy for real. I also searched online for a cheaper gym. 24HourFitness is ‘bout 30 a month. I heard LAFitness is about 15. Yo, I don’t want the gym to be packed though. If it’s cheaper there’s probably more people there. Quotation Nr: 18 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Mostly because I work out at the gym and sometimes I either pull something or because it feels like it’s broken. Quotation Nr: 14 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Before I started studying for my LSAT all I used to look for was different types of body building techniques and ways to stay in shape. Do you know you can burn calories from chewing gum? For reals man. I just always try to look good for work. Page 5of 9 6

Do you know you can burn calories from chewing gum? For reals man. I just always try to look good for work.Code: Breast CancerQuotation Nr: 24 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no My mother passed almost 3 years ago. It was tough…it still is…You know how Spanish moms are. My mom was like any typical Cuban mother. She never wanted to go the doctor. She al ways said, “ay no tengo tiempo”. It was always something that would take aw ay her time from going. It wasn’t until she had intense pain that kept he r from sleeping that she decided to go to the emergency room. She went to (the local hospital) and was admitted…after hours of testing they found that she had late stage, stage 4 breast cancer. The doctors pretty mu ch told her to enjoy the time she had with her family… Quotation Nr: 27 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no The thing is that my younger sister is now 16. She was 13 back then so it wasn’t so much a worry as it is now. It hit me that she has to get tested to make sure that she doesn’t have any of the BRCA genes. There the genes that put you at higher risk for cancer. I’ve been looking online, at the library…everywhere to see where or what my sister should do. I wonder if she’s still too young. I just don’t want her to go through the same pain Quotation Nr: 29 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I feel catching things early is always best. My mom was also diagnosed with breast cancer. She had taken a ro utine mammogram, it wasn’t a full week when she got a call to visit the doctor as soon as she could. They told my mom that she had non invasive, stage 0 breast cancer in both Page 6of 9 6

breasts. I remember my mom crying, and my dad telling her God will see them through. My mom had to decide between chemo therapy or having both breasts removed. My mom chose to go through with chemo therapy. I’m happy to say that it has been 7 years since and thank God, my mom has been cancer free. I still worry that and pray that nothing changes. The reason I brought this up is because I do think that (Marcus) should convince his sister to see a doctor to prevent anything from happening. Another thing…I know I shouldn’t…but…fr om time to time I look online to see what the chances are that my moth er might still get sick. I hope God always keeps watch over her.Code: Broken homeQuotation Nr: 94 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no What hurts the most is when I see my mom cry. My dad is hardly around. He drives a truck for a living. I swear he’s pretty worthless.Code: Calling for questionsQuotation Nr: 62 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no My parents can’t manage computers. Much less the internet. They’re alwa ys calling from home to ask me medical type questionsCode: carcinogensQuotation Nr: 30 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I just wanted to know everything and anything related to pancreatic cancer. Especi ally about treatments. The biggest thing that I ran into was that changing your diet can really help you avoid a bunch of cancer causing things that you find in some foods. BHT, BHA and nitrates all of these can ca use cancer. A bunch of major food Page 7of 9 6

companies put these preservatives in their food even though they’re not good for you. So when my mom was going through treatment, me and my family all started becoming vegans.Code: carpal tunnel syndromeQuotation Nr: 21 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no When I’m online it’s mostly looking fo r things for (Kelly) and the bambino. I do search for myself every once in a blue moon. I’ve had this pain in my hands for several weeks. It’s like a numbing feeling with pain pulsating every now and again. When I spoke to my co worker she said she had the same thing several months before she told me I should look to see if I have carpal tunnel syndrome. I researched the net to find out if I had some of the symptoms. I thought I had carpel tunnel for sure. When I went to the doctor all the dude did was tell me to take aspirin and to rub my hand with some prescription cream he gave me. I still have pain and numbnessCode: CDCQuotation Nr: 69 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I know sites like the CDC gives good advice with things like controlling blood sugar levels and other subjects related to diabetes that my parents usually ask me to look forCode: Cerebral PalsyQuotation Nr: 20 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I don’t know if you can tell I feel most people can tell...I have cerebral palsy. Since I wa s baby, my mom says doctors will tell her that I would never be able to walk Obviously, I’ve proved them wrong. It wasn’t easy…I still remember going to physical therapy as a kid. I only have a small limp now when I walk. Mo st people think I just have a pimp walk. It’s funny. I also can barely list en out of my right ear. But the fact Page 8of 9 6

remains that I proved doctors wrong.Code: CNN.comQuotation Nr: 56 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no CNN.comCode: ComfortQuotation Nr: 32 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I search the web to save on time not having to (call) people for prices. Code: companionship during searchQuotation Nr: 25 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no She can look herself but she thinks its fun for both of us to look togetherCode: confusionQuotation Nr: 43 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no There really is a lot of confusion. How do we know if the things we run across are reliable? That’s a major problem. I think if we had standards then that would probably cause less problems. Quotation Nr: 11 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I’ve looked online to see if the stories are true and all I can find is that the rese arch is inconclusive on whether too many drinks can have adverse effects such as heart attacks Quotation Nr: 12 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I’ve felt my heart palpitating before so I’ve also sear ched for heart attack symptoms. I see palpitations and chest pains are both symptoms and warning signs. So I (freaking) freak out whenever I start to feel any type of pain in my chest. Quotation Nr: 33 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I think my lady is cheating on me. She’s told me tw ice now about feeling pain when she pees. She says she thinks she has a tract infection. But you’re not supposed to smell anything pungent if it were. That’s what I read online.Code: ContraindicationsQuotation Nr: 71 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no He usually calls to ask which prescripti ons are contraindicated with the ones he’s taking. Search ing ahead of time I know it won’t be open anymore by the time I get there. Quotation Nr: 34 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Remember I told you about my finger earlier…I feel it’s way more feasible for me to look up what probably happened to my finger than to go to some doc’s office for them to tell me the sa me thing I found online. I save time and money that way. Quotation Nr: 40 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no It helps for me. It made things easy. Don’t forget some of us mentioned how it’s private and convenience. It ai n’t our fault if (oth ers) can’t figure things out. There’s a point why th e web was created…to make things easier for everyone. Quotation Nr: 41 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I agreed. Online, the internet helps. You can find anything you want. It meant made to help. In Colombia the net helps my mom. When she calls I find things for her fast. In totally, the internet helps.Code: cooperative health careQuotation Nr: 129 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I think that you can balance going online for health information with going to the doctors. I know some doctors that encourage you to help in your treatment by looking online for health information that may seem beneficial to you. Some work with you to get to exactly what the problem might be. Page 11of 9 6

PAGE 12

Quotation Nr: 130 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I hear that works to some extreme bu t some patient still think they know more than their doctors. What you find online is more often than not, not the correct diagnosis for yourself. That brings about arguments with your physicians. I don’t think that mo del of health ca re works well. Quotation Nr: 131 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Some doctors work with you to see what your symptoms are that you’ve looked up online. Quotation Nr: 132 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Some doctors work with you to see what your symptoms are that you’ve looked up online. It makes sense if you’re looking up informatio n than that means you are looking for possible explanations for your illness. You know best what you feel. If whatever you print out reflects that, and you bring them to the doctor. Obviously that should help th em narrow down health issues Quotation Nr: 133 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I can see the other side of the coin, if you’re not actively looking up your problems and decide to see what it can be ten minutes before your appointment than surely you can’t tell the doctor th at you know exactly what you have. Quotation Nr: 134 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no It would be great if more and more doctors would work with patients or patients’ family members to correctly diagnose an illness. Quotation Nr: 137 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I mean we see him more often than any doctor who just spends 20 minutes with him.Code: CousinsQuotation Nr: 98 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I can’t say I can completely relate but my cousin was in a car accident a few years ago. Are we really getting everything we need to know? You had me second guessing myself if what I foun d for Tegretol is accurate. I don’t know now…should go to my doctor? Man.Code: Credibility of SourceQuotation Nr: 35 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I think WebMD is pretty credible. Quotation Nr: 36 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Usually google gives me a lot of links to helpful sites. Quotation Nr: 66 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no You can usually tell which sites are fake or spam Quotation Nr: 67 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no For any little thing... Google, Bing, Yahoo, I search them all. You can usually tell which sites are fake or spam. They usually have some pop up before you can ever read the articles. Quotation Nr: 103 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I spend most of my time around computers. I mean that’s what I do. I learn to engineer faster processing circuits but I rarely search online for health things. Most of it comes from made up facts. I can’t trust anything that appears on searches. If you understand the algorithms involved you know that the computer isn’t actually thinking to solve your answer. It only processes probabilities linked to yo ur search terms. Websites index information on their pages. Search engines link these indexes to your search terms. Quotation Nr: 107 Source: Focus Group I I know I can trust the CDC website since that’s where my parents Page 1 3 of 9 6

Quotation Nr: 111 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I can’t trust websites because you don’t know which ones might have viruses. P Quotation Nr: 121 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Like I said earlier, I don’t trust websites. I think society needs more education before they start making medical decisions for themselves. Quotation Nr: 136 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Mayoclinic.com, WebMD, and Medline I think they’re all reputable Quotation Nr: 138 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no We’ve done a lot of looking up. I think the sites we got our info from are pretty decent. Mayoclinic.com, WebMD, and Medline I think they’re all reputable. Quotation Nr: 23 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no WebMD…the information seems like its trustworthy. But from wh at I remember a lot of the links on the web page didn’t have where they got their information from. May be I should be skeptical. Now you got me thinking man… Quotation Nr: 35 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Pretty much since everyone these days grows up around computers and mobile phones… I don’t see how people won’t be able to tell the difference between what’s real online and what isn’t. You do… have trolls on Facebook though. Sometimes some posts make me wonder. I don’t know I guess maybe not everybody would know when something is made up or not. That’s a good question. I would say no…there are some fools believe anything they hear. Quotation Nr: 36 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I think…I can see that there’s still those that don’t know when something is a hoax. Have you ever seen that commercial where the lady says she met a French model online. That dude was healla ugly. Page 1 4 of 9 6

PAGE 15

Quotation Nr: 3 7 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no You know that commercial is true some girls go for some ugly ass (men). Its cause they don’t know when they’re being lied to. That’s the problem with the internet. I think something sh ould be done. May be if you teach people in school to look for things that might help. Quotation Nr: 38 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Yeah...more people need to learn how to be aware of everything they see or hear online, on TV… where ever. I don’t think society is educated enough where everyone can tell if something on the web is solid information. More needs to be done. Quotation Nr: 39 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Listening to myself and the things just said…may be searching fo r health information creates more of a problem. Are we really getting everything we need to know? You had me second guessing myself if what I foun d for Tegretol is accurate. I don’t know now…should go to my doctor? Man. Quotation Nr: 33 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no There’s some truth to that…if me and (Kelly) would listen to everything we ran across online and everything we ’ve read or even what the doctors have told us I’m pretty sure we would’ ve gone crazy in no time. Everything in moderation…es lo clave papo. Quotation Nr: 34 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I can see how it’s easy to freak about the things you read online. I thought I was going blind when I read up on eye lacerations and surgeries. I think you have to have to have a healthy dose of skepticism with everything you read or see online. Otherwise you wi ll end up with a problem. With so many people wanting to hurt each othe r, scam others, and steal identities you have to be really careful with what information you put online and the sites you go to. Just as easy as you can read information on their sites they can get your IP address and possibly more. These days you gotta hope that you’re good at judging truth from deception. Quotation Nr: 36 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I had the scare with my little niece and that point I didn’t feel I had enough experience with what I was research ing. Most of us do know how to research but I really didn’t look to see exactly where most of my information was coming from. The realit y is that most of us assume that since a site is pretty well known it probably has accurate, researched Page 1 5 of 9 6

material. Sadly, I don’t really think most of these sites have good resources. A bunch of them mostly co py off of each other and have the same things, word for word. Quotation Nr: 37 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no When you google something usually like the first 3 results are all the same thing word for word and we’re supposed to believe that since the web sites are different the articles are different too? Quotation Nr: 38 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Yeah but what if it’s all wrong? Then you have multiple sites that have the wrong information for millions to see. Quotation Nr: 39 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no If millions are getting the wrong information wouldn’t there be an uproar? People complaining and things like that? I think that most people are knowledgeable about the things they look for? I mean you have to have some clue of what you are googling. Quotation Nr: 40 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no But is it always right? I still feel yo u can’t trust everything you read or see.Code: Decipher your ownQuotation Nr: 112 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Pretty much I feel you have to be your own detective. Quotation Nr: 113 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no So what I’m trying to say is that I rather have my choice to select from which sites might be telling me the truth. Quotation Nr: 120 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no You have to be your own best critic. But I think we need to be better educated to make critical calls on our health. That’s why as long as its simple th ings just going online is enough. Quotation Nr: 124 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no But if you are going to go online to find health information, I do think its critical that people become be tter critics of the information that’s in Page 1 6 of 9 6

front of them. Quotation Nr: 126 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I feel most of us can tell when lies are being told to us. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if I have a runny nose and a fever I probably have the flu. Quotation Nr: 127 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I feel most of us can tell when lies are being told to us. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if I have a runny nose and a fever I probably have the flu. If I keep sneezing and nothing else I probably have allergies. So doctors are only if you think there’s no other solution Quotation Nr: 130 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I hear that works to some extreme bu t some patient still think they know more than their doctors. Quotation Nr: 35 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I think most of us here have a grip on the things we search for. Most of us do online research for classes all the time. I don’t think researching health content is that much different. If you usually research things for class I think you should be pretty well off in looking for things for yourself Quotation Nr: 36 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I had the scare with my little niece and that point I didn’t feel I had enough experience with what I was research ing. Most of us do know how to research but I really didn’t look to see exactly where most of my information was coming from. The realit y is that most of us assume that since a site is pretty well known it probably has accurate, researched material. Sadly, I don’t really think most of these sites have good resources. A bunch of them mostly co py off of each other and have the same things, word for word. Quotation Nr: 40 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no If you knew what you were looking for there wouldn’t be a need to look it up right? Quotation Nr: 41 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Then I guess most people don’t know enough to tell whether or not the things they look for are reliable Quotation Nr: 40 Source: Focus Group IV But is it always right? I still feel yo u can’t trust everything you read or see. Page 18of 9 6

Transcript.pd f Has Comment: no Quotation Nr: 43 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Just because you have some e ducation doesn’t mean you know everything. I hope to start law school by next year but I still don’t know if I’m having a heart attack or might be getting a stroke. I don’t know any better because that’s not what I’m going to school for.Code: dentistQuotation Nr: 2 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Early last week I had crazy tooth pain. So I decided to get on Facebook to see what others would say. Quotation Nr: 45 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no If a search can delay getting help for some people, why can’t it urge others to go to a doctor sooner? When my tooth was hurting I quickly decided to see my dentist. Quotation Nr: 8 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Well lately my tooth has been sore for a while. The pain comes and goes but usually I feel it isn’t too strong. The trouble is that now I get a sore throat from time to time. Since I’m in theatre I act and sing a lot so maybe it’s also because of my singing. Most of the places on the internet say that it is possible for me to get a sore throat if my tooth is infected I don’t really think it is. I feel my tooth is just sens itive. Anyhow I plan to see my dentist next week just in case it is.Code: depressionQuotation Nr: 28 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no It’s because I have been depressed lately. My girl…well my ex… thinks I should go see somebody for therapy. Last year I switched my major from mathematics to statistics because I took complex variables a second time and failed it. I had no other way aro und it. Statistics was the only other major I found that had all the same requisites. The thing is I lost my bright futures and now I have to work to pay tuition and books. I used to bank Page 1 9 of 9 6

now every penny I make goes to school. I don’t even know if going to school is worth the trouble. I really feel like quitting school. My dad always tells me that they can’t take away your education. They can take away everything else but they can’t take away your education. I don’t believe it. I don’t see how. That’s why talking to others helps me. I guess going online is like having a support group. I can’t go see someone. If I went to some psychiatrist it will probably go on my record people will probably be able to see that when I apply for another job or something.Code: DiabetesQuotation Nr: 48 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I always wonder if I’m at higher odds for catching things like diabetes since my parents both live with diabetes. Quotation Nr: 69 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I know sites like the CDC gives good advice with things like controlling blood sugar levels and other subjects related to diabetes that my parents usually ask me to look for Quotation Nr: 15 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no When I’m walking to class or waiting in between classes you can probably almost always catch me looking for or posting about Diabetes on my phone Quotation Nr: 16 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Most people think that you don’t have to worry about it since your hear about it all the time…but …when you hear that they had to amputate your mom’s foot or when you hear that your mommy is losing her sight in her right eye...Then you start to worry.Code: dietQuotation Nr: 16 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I sometimes search for things on spiritua l health. I have a lot to be thankful to God for. I search for things like how to keep your body and mind clean for God. I find that what Robert says coincides with a lot of the things I find Page 20of 9 6

related to diet and spiritual health. I think that vegan is probably the best option in terms of keeping away from animal meat. I especially keep away from anything that may come from pork. Quotation Nr: 17 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Aside from what I told you about my gi rlfriend. I tend to look online for energy supplements and vitamins. I’ m always feeling tired and a little depressed. I know I should check it out but between school, work, (Jessenia), I don’t feel I have time. I even take stuff like 5 Hour Energy, Redbull, and RockStar but they only work for a little while. My folks seem to think that I probably have some hormonal imbalance Quotation Nr: 4 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no she’s going to therapy for her eating disorder with a specialist. Yeah…the search wasn’t too hard for me either. But I worry about my girl Quotation Nr: 13 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no When I’m on iPad I tend to just browse and post on Pinterest. Usually I post things on juicing and juicing recipes. Quotation Nr: 14 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I mean juicing like gett ing juice from fruits and vegetables. I saw this documentary on a guy that lost like 300 pounds from juicing. He replaced his daily me als with a juice every time. Most of the sicknesses he had went away. Quotation Nr: 15 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no My girl juices for her and the baby too. Supposedly she gets a lot of vitamins and minerals that way Quotation Nr: 30 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I just wanted to know everything and anything related to pancreatic cancer. Especi ally about treatments. The biggest thing that I ran into was that changing your diet can really help you avoid a bunch of cancer causing things that you find in some foods. BHT, BHA and nitrates all of these can ca use cancer. A bunch of major food companies put these preservatives in their food even though they’re not good for you. So when my mom was going through treatment, me and my Page 21of 9 6

family all started becoming vegans. Quotation Nr: 31 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no We all supported my mom with her change of diet. Some days the food was just plain nasty but we did anything we could to help my mom. I think that changing the food we ate helped my mom live a lot longer than doctors said she would. My mom was able to fight the cancer for four ye ars. It hurts so much, even today after 2 years but I know God wanted he r. I know she’s looking from above every day. That’s why I became a vegetarian and will never change. Some of my friends who try tofu for the time think that it tastes nasty but me…I just love the taste of it.Code: diet tipsQuotation Nr: 37 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no diet tipsCode: Difficulty searchingQuotation Nr: 23 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no it’s not easy when you know you have a serious condition to deal withCode: disadvantagesQuotation Nr: 42 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no People not knowing whether there info rmation is reliable. Quotation Nr: 119 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no but I do think going online to look for simple questions beats a trip or a phone call to the doctor or the pharmacy. Not having to go to the doctor and pay a copay seems pretty smart to me. So long as it’s not dire. I agree that going online for simple things is a better bargain. Quotation Nr: 120 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no You have to be your own best critic. But I think we need to be better educated to make critical calls on our health. That’s why as long as its simple th ings just going online is enough. Quotation Nr: 123 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no It’s not cool that some doctors lose sight of the real reason for medicine. Quotation Nr: 125 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no It’s pretty simple I search the Internet for health related stuff when I’m low on funds and I know that whatever I have won’t kill me fast. see what others have said about side effects because of Pepto. I even asked my brother what I should take…since he’s a nurse… he told me laxatives. I thought that if I do I’ll end up with diarrhea again. It doesn’t make sense. I think the best thing to do is what I found online. Do you know about yahoo answers? Quotation Nr: 32 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I guess if I had insurance I would definitely rather go to a doctor or some type of clinic with a nurse practitioner or P.A. Anything is better than just relying on what you find online. Quotation Nr: 35 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no From my experience I saw that the internet is great but the best information will always come from the doctors. If someone is really sick I guess you should also pray about it. Quotation Nr: 36 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no You can’t trust everyone in the health field. My brother is worthless and he’s still a nurse. The stuff I found online is better than the crap my brother told me. To take some laxatives. He’s stupid man. I had diarrhea to begin with why would I take laxati ves now that I’m constipated Quotation Nr: 42 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Why are there malpractice lawsuits and negligence laws? Not every doctor cares about their patients as much as they do the money. I mean I had to ca ll like 10 doctors’ offices just to get someone that will look at me without insurance. TCode: facebookQuotation Nr: 2 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Early last week I had crazy tooth pain. So I decided to get on Facebook to see what others would say. Quotation Nr: 5 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no The weird things is that it has been years since I’ve gotten nosebleeds. So the last time I went Page 30of 9 6

online for health information I didn’t search per se but rather posted a question and got some responses from my friends. Quotation Nr: 45 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Someone earlier mentioned something about how the world is becoming smaller because of the internet. What he said is right. As a sociology major I think it’s awesome that there’s a mix of cultures happening because of Facebook, Twitter, Skype a nd those. Can you imagine if all the brightest people got together to by these means for helping others. I definitely think the internet is helping all of us with our health. Quotation Nr: 52 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Me and some friends organized a rally to educate others about organic foods and being vegan. The farmers market on (major street in the city) wanted for us tell others how being vegan helps with being fit and healthy. We used both Twitter and Facebook to advertise for it. We also uploaded a video short video telling others of the free food and giveaways. I hope that it changed peoples’ views.Code: FamilyQuotation Nr: 59 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I usually search online for my family. He had something like 70 stiches on the left side of his face and skull. I remember it was almost Page 31of 9 6

December before he returned home. My brother and I think that he probably has post traumatic stress syndrome. Quotation Nr: 102 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no A bunch of them seem to point to the fact that my cousin may have a problem. I just don’t how we would tell him. Or if we should tell his dad. I definitely think if he saw a psychiatrist it would help him. Quotation Nr: 106 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Me, my girlfriend, and my family, we’re all going to Costa Rica in August. I looked up that we need typhoid vaccines since we’re going to travel to the jungles for zip lining. Quotation Nr: 135 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no It would be great if more and more doctors would work with patients or patients’ family members to correctly diagnose an illness. I mean if doctors’ listened to what my brother and I had to say about my cousin’s condition they would have more sides to the story other than however mental state my cousin could be in when he attends a doctor’s visit. Sometimes they don’t even let my uncle go in to see the doctor with (Raphael). I know it’s a privacy thing but for cases like my cousin I’m sure it would help. Quotation Nr: 19 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Honestly bro. The reason I’ve been trying to cut pounds is…it just makes me sad even now. I always get sad when I think about it…My grandfather passed away two years ago. My mami had recently brought him over from Cuba. My grandmother is still there, in Pinar del Rio. He was only here a few months. I was on my way to class. Back 2 years ago I was going to Miami Dade College for school. It was dual enrollment I was doing…You know high school and college at the same time. So it was hard for me, I felt I was still young. I still remember my mom on the phone when she called me. All I could hear was weeping. She told me mijito abuelo murio. Ohh man it still hurts me to this day. My grand daddy died and I didn’t tell him how much I loved him. The doctor ’s said he had congestive heart failure. He just didn’t reach the hospital fast enough. He was having a heart attack and died on the ambulance, the paramedics said they tried everything. Can you imagine? I know its because he was overweight, Page 3 2 of 9 6

never active. He always sat around play ing dominos. I’m scared that mami might have the same happen to her. (Dr. Hernandez) told her to take her blood pressure medicine and to keep be careful with her diet. I think she also has heart problems but she’s not being completely honest. It’s cause of that, that I’m trying to lose weight I don’t want to die young I don’t want to keep being obese. That’s why whenever I go online these days I try looking for weight loss information. I’ve even tried to search for ways to get a lap band. I haven’t told the brothers but I’ve been throwing up everything I eat. I don’t want to die. Quotation Nr: 24 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no My mother passed almost 3 years ago. The doctors pretty mu ch told her to enjoy the time she had with her family… Quotation Nr: 29 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I feel catching things early is always best. My mom was also diagnosed with breast cancer. She had taken a ro utine mammogram, it wasn’t a full week when she got a call to visit the doctor as soon as she could. They told my mom that she had non invasive, stage 0 breast cancer in both breasts. I hope God always keeps watch over her. Page 3 3 of 9 6

I did google some th ings and found that its normal for women to have uterine fibroids. I ju st didn’t find anything about whether the bigger they are if it can lead to cancer. Everyone loved my mommy. When she was diagnosed I woul dn’t stop looking online, at the library…any place really. Some of my friends who try tofu for the time think that it tastes nasty but me…I just love the taste of it. The brochures the doctors and nurses give barely answer any of the real questions you have like if my girl can take Tylenol when she has a fever or headache. At least family always has your best interest at heart. Searching online only leads to more stress in my opinion. Quotation Nr: 28 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no It’s because I have been depressed lately. I used to bank now every penny I make goes to school. I can’t go see someone. the point…I tweeted a picture of my nosebleed on twitter and Facebook the other day and got a couple comments from some of my highschool friends on how they had the same thing happen to them. Anyhow I plan to see my dentist next week just in case it is. Quotation Nr: 30 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I just wanted to know everything and anything related to pancreatic cancer. So when my mom was going through treatment, me and my family all started becoming vegans. Lately though, I don’t know. She’s gained a bunch of weight and I don’t know how to kindly tell her. From the blogs I’ve been reading up on how if I get her to come with me to the gym or if I ask her to come on walks with me or swimming with me that will probably spark her to cont inue getting in shape. The blogs just warn me to play it careful. Most say that honesty is the best policy. I guess if you stick to what you know you can be pretty certain what you read isn’t too farfetched. Quotation Nr: 45 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no If a search can delay getting help for some people, why can’t it urge others to go to a doctor sooner? When my tooth was hurting I quickly decided to see my dentist. Quotation Nr: 46 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I feel searching online helped me by giving me a clue of what the heck a meconium infection was. I think it helps to benefit some people by providing a foundation. Obviously you become an expert overnight but you have to start somewhere. Quotation Nr: 47 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no What I found pressured me to make an appointment with my dentist. I think that what I found helped to convince me that I needed to get real help for my teeth and my throat. I’m just saying searching helped me. Quotation Nr: 19 Source: Focus Group IV Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I came here 3 years ago and when I saw how people live here I was shocked. People complain about the air not cooling enough and being hungry after eating 2 hours before. In Honduras the only place you find air conditioning is at the mall or airport. I just can’t wait to see if they pass the dream act. The biggest thing that I ran into was that changing your diet can really help you avoid a bunch of cancer causing things that you find in some foods. BHT, BHA and nitrates all of these can ca use cancer. A bunch of major food companies put these preservatives in their food even though they’re not good for you. So when my mom was going through treatment, me and my family all started becoming vegans.Code: MedicineQuotation Nr: 21 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no One thing I wish got better is my seizures. My mom was also diagnosed with breast cancer. She had taken a ro utine mammogram, it wasn’t a full week when she got a call to visit the doctor as soon as she could. They told my mom that she had non invasive, stage 0 breast cancer in both breasts. Quotation Nr: 29 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Ain’t that the truth. It’s funny… I fe el like people usually search online when they think whatever they have ain’t that serious and whenever you do 9 times out of 10 you end up thinking its way worse than what you really got. My boy the other day thought he had Mumps because he looked online to see why he had a sore throat and pain in his (testicles). Some people just take too se riously what they find online. Transcript.pd f Has Comment: no you have to have to have a healthy dose of skepticism with everything you read or see online. Otherwise you wi ll end up with a problem. With so many people wanting to hurt each othe r, scam others, and steal identities you have to be really careful with what information you put online and the sites you go to. Quotation Nr: 43 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no There really is a lot of confusion. How do we know if the things we run across are reliable? That’s a major problem. I think if we had standards then that would probably cause less problems. Quotation Nr: 44 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I think the biggest concern is added stress of not knowing 100% of what you have. Let me see…No I didn’t find the search difficult. Quotation Nr: 8 Source: Focus Group III Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no So I made an appointment for this morning. The farmers market on (major street in the city) wanted for us tell others how being vegan helps with being fit and healthy. We used both Twitter and Facebook to advertise for it. We also uploaded a video short video telling others of the free food and giveaways. I hope that it changed peoples’ views.Code: unesiness about illnessHmm…about three weeks ago I searched for what a bone spur is. I found Page 88of 9 6

I did google some th ings and found that its normal for women to have uterine fibroids. I ju st didn’t find anything about whether the bigger they are if it can lead to cancer. The biggest thing that I ran into was that changing your diet can really help you avoid a bunch of cancer causing things that you find in some foods. BHT, BHA and nitrates all of these can ca use cancer. A bunch of major food companies put these preservatives in their food even though they’re not good for you. So when my mom was going through treatment, me and my family all started becoming vegans.Code: videos onlineQuotation Nr: 95 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I also look to see if there are any articles or videos on therapies my mom or I can try with (Jessica). So I try to take it mostly at night even though the things I read online say I shouldn’t do that. Lately I’ve looked for different treatments to my seizures. I found some things on this web page called WebMD. The site has a bunch of links to everything. Quotation Nr: 23 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no WebMD…the information seems like its trustworthy. But from wh at I remember a lot of the links on the web page didn’t have where they got their information from. May be I should be skeptical. Quotation Nr: 5 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no Me and (Jessenia) have been going out since we were juniors in high school. I mean the real reason I care is cause I care for her health. I started wi th weightwatchers.com since I keep seeing their ads on the tube. I don’t kn ow if I trust these big companies will help me with anything. After I submitted the online application these people called me right away. I was like chill I was just looking around I’m not serious yet. The lady on the pho ne told me about weight watchers online for men. It sounded interestin g but I gotta hear from other folks who’ve done the plan. Counting points! Now I finally know what those girls were talking about at the gym the other day Quotation Nr: 3 Source: Focus Group II Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I didn’t think my search was challenging. I looked for Jenny Craig, I even went to nutrisystem.com. I just want to know which program might be best for me. I got membership to LA Fitness but I feel exercise alone is not helping me lose weight. The monthl y charges for these programs are insane though. Some like Jenny Crai g charge $100 bucks just to sign up and a month to month fee. They said they’ll throw in free shipping on products for six months. I’m like hell no. I know its because he was overweight, Page 9 3 of 9 6

never active. I don’t want to die.Code: Wondering if surgery is neededQuotation Nr: 11 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I was freaking out I thought I needed surgery.Code: Worries About SymptomsQuotation Nr: 10 Source: Focus Group I Transcript.pdf Has Comment: no I swore I had a hernia last week. I have a smart TV so I can just search for things in my living room and do any of the exercises I see right then and there Page 9 6 of 9 6
