FOUND IN TRANSLATION OVERVIEW The purpose of this assignment is to practice brainstorming keywords which will later help you to search for relevant material on a topic of your choice. You will also practice locating call number ranges for the focused browsing of print books in the library stacks. DUE DATE Literacy Lab 4 is due Monday, 9/24 /2012 before 11:55 PM

LAB DIRECTIONS Step by step directions for completing the assignment. (Refer to the completed example for assistance.) 1. On the attached worksheet, write your research question in natural language. 2. Circle three important words. Write each word in a box in the keywords ro w. 3. Brainstorm at least two synonyms, broader terms, and narrower terms for each keyword. 4. Choose a possible call number range to browse for each keyword. Refer to the Library of Congress Classification Outline: http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/ Write the call number range as well as the category. (ex. HV 5725 5770 Tobacco habit). 5. Submit your assignment to the course website as a single document in Word (.doc, .docx) or PDF (.pdf) format. You can do thi s by scanning your completed print worksheet and saving it as a PDF, or by creating your own table in Word, Publisher, or a sim ilar program. GRADING RUBRIC Percent of grade = 4% Total possible points = 4 points Criteria Points Identifies three important concepts (keywords) and brainstorms at least two relevant synonyms, broader terms, and narrower terms. 2.0 Is able to use the LOC Classification Outline to identify call number ranges that would contain books on each keyword. 1.5 Follows all formatting guidelines (pdf, doc, docx) and submission requirements (single file with image and text online in course system). 0.5 TOTAL 4.0
