Scope and Content:
Correspondence, business account notebooks, official marriage, deed, estate records, and a manuscript memoir. Collection includes family correspondence ranging from James I in 1884 to James III in 1882, the bulk (3 boxes) of which chronicles the business and personal affairs of James III. Major subjects covered include the Second Seminole War in Florida, the Civil War, the Andersonville Prison in Georgia, and business operations characteristic of the nineteenth century. Other topics include yellow fever outbreaks in Florida, frontier life in north Florida, Spanish land grant claims, and family history. Researchers may find the ongoing, regular correspondence between James III and McNaught useful for topics relating to business practices of the period. Of particular note is the handwritten autobiography of James III, dictated in the year before his death. The collection is arranged chronologically.
Abstract:
The collection includes correspondence, business letters, account books, and a memoir manuscript created by members of the Ormond family of Florida.
Biographical:
Captain James Ormond I (175?-1819), born in Scotland, commanded the brig Somerset. He owned a plantation on Exuma in the Bahamas, but then took advantage of Spanish land grants in Florida. He settled near New Smyrna, Florida, where he was later killed by a neighbor's slave. James Ormond II (179?-1829), also born in Scotland, came to Florida with his wife, Isabella (neé Christie), and their four children after a failed business venture. They lived on the Damietta plantation, near St. Augustine, Florida. James Ormond III (1815-1892) was born in Mayfield, Scotland. During the Second Seminole War, he volunteered in the Mosquito Roarers militia as a sergeant. Ormond married Elizabeth Chaires in 1844, with whom he had nine children. His business ventures included the Atlanta Paper Mill, one of the first paper mill operations in the South and other enterprises with his partner William McNaught. During the Civil War, Ormond worked as an adjutant at Andersonville Prison. He moved his family to Canada and England after the war, returning to Atlanta in 1867. He later came back to Florida and settled near the remains of his former plantation, Damietta. The town of Ormond, named for him, was incorporated in 1880. Atlanta, Oct. 20, 186h

Dear Ormond,

Austell will go south in a few days and through him have a

chance of writing a few lines.

Enclosed, find a telegram dispatch recieved on the 15th in-

stant by mail from Mc Naught at Nashville announcing a safe arr-

ival of all,.have heard nothing further from him nor have I comm-

unicated with him.

Yours and McNought's houses and premises are still occupied

by the parties you left in possession and in about the same state

of preservation. Bob, Harriet, and Peter are still at home, Bob

told me two days ago that the soldiers had stolen his man and most

of his pegs. My house and premises have been assigned for hos-

pital purposes and will have to look out for other quarters.

Captain Palmer and Dr. Brewer are still wit:i me and as soon as

other quarters are assigned Captain Palmer we will move. I had

thought of remaining here this winter but now think of going

with L. C. Wells (who is here & th his family) to Louisville

Kentucky as soon as we can get off and make an effort to do some

business. Should I do so will endeavor to communicate with you.

I find nothing to be made by remaining hereand as Wells thinks

through the influence of his friends something can be done that

will at least pay expenses if not better, have concluded to try my

fortune with his.

T feel much the loss of yours and old Mc strong arm steady hands

to guide me and I am so completely unstrung that I know not what

to do, however I shall trust toProvedense and do what seems best.

Angus is still with Captan Palmer, he pays him $1O0 fn per

month amd rations (he boards with Craig). T hope you will give m

wife the benifit of your advice relative to disposition of wat
t
property she may have and investment and will make it as a spec-

ial favor if you will advise John Green. I have written Maryann

also by Austell but for fear she may not recieve my letter I will

thank you to drop her a note and advise her of my intentions.

I learned from gentlemen above that the country from Chatt-

anooga to Atlan ta for miles on both sides of the railroad is a

desolate waste and hardly a human b eing to bee seen. Several

families are here yet waiting and onpertunity of going north

among them of your acquaintance are Raulins Markhams, Moore Sib-

ley, and Schofield, Wells made hes arrangements to leave on the

25th but have not been able to get off, Should much like to writ,'

a long letter. If possible let me hear from you. You may be able

to communicate with me through Austell. Hes P. O. is Lagrange,

Ga. Direct your letters in care of Captain Thomas Palmer a.2.m.

Atlanta, Ga. and he iI 1! forward to Louisville, Ky. should I go
God
