The law also states that: A woman can have credit in her own name. A single woman cannot lose her credit rating when she marries. A married woman cannot lose her credit rating if she becomes divorced, separated, or widowed. Alimony and child support will be seen as part of a woman's income only if she chooses to list it. Creditors must count a wife's income even if a job is part-time. Creditors cannot tell a woman not to apply for credit. Lenders cannot ask a woman about her birth control method or if she plans to have a baby. Creditors must tell the reason for denying credit, if asked. The law protects women. But it does not guarantee that credit will be given. Credit is given based on each person's credit rating. Women and Credit/Crdito Para Mujeres Page 2 Credit in Your Name For all joint accounts opened since June 1, 1988, creditors must report information to credit reporting agencies in both the husband's and wife's names. How Do You Get a Credit Rating There are many ways to get your own credit rating. Choose the ways that are helpful for you: Apply for a loan. You may need to get a fullor part-time job. It may take up to one year on the job before you can get a cash loan or other types of credit in your own name. Pay off the loan as agreed. Have your name added to accounts that are now in your husband's name only. This will also help avoid credit problems if you are later divorced or if your husband dies before you do. Open a checking account in your own name. If you are getting a divorce and you are paying off your bills jointly, make sure that the payments are credited to your credit file. This will show that you are a good credit risk.
