Recyclingpapersavesfrom24to54percentofthe energyforpapermanufacturing.SteelSteeliseasytorecyclebecauseitcanbe magneticallyseparatedfromothermaterials.In1989, onlyabout15percentofsteelfoodandbeveragecans wererecycled.Tomakesteelfromscraptakesabout halfasmuchenergyasmakingitfromitstraditional rawmaterialscoal,ironoreandlimestone.AluminumThealuminumcansyoubuyyourbeveragesin weremostlikelycansbefore.Morethan54percentof allaluminumbeveragecanswererecycledin1988. Theyaretypicallyrecycledbackintobeveragecans. It'spossibleforanaluminumcantomovefromthe retailer'sshelf,toyourhome,intotherecycling processandbacktothestoreshelfinaslittleassix weeks.And,itcanberecycledoverandoveragain. Analuminumcanyoubuy20yearsfromnowcould containsomeofthealuminumyourecycledtoday! Producingnewmetalfromusedaluminumsaves95 percentoftheenergyneededtoproducealuminum fromore.Recyclingone12ouncealuminumcan savestheequivalentofhalfofthatsamecan,orsix ounces,ofgasoline.Toillustratetheenvironmental impactoftheenergylostwhenaluminumisnot recycled,imagineburningsixouncesofgasolineinthe middleofyourlivingroom.Throwingawayone aluminumcanhasthesameimpactintermsof pollutionandwastingenergy.PlasticSometypesofplasticarecurrentlyrecycledin largeamounts.Polyethyleneterephthalate(PET)is usedformakingtheliter-sizesoft-drinkbottle.Itis recycledintosuchitemsasskijackets,carpetsand geotechnicalmaterialslikeerosioncontrolmesh.In 1988,150millionpoundsofPETwerebeing reclaimed,and600millionareestimatedtobe reclaimedin1992.HDPE,orhigh-density polyethylene,isusedforthegallon-sizemilkjugand isrecycledintonewcontainersfornon-fooditems, suchasdishdetergentandothercleaners.In1988,60 millionpoundswerereclaimed.That'sexpectedto increaseto560millionpoundsin1992.QuestionsinRecyclingPlasticsThetechnologyforrecyclingothertypesofplastic isstillbeingdeveloped.Alongwiththat,weneedto developtheinfrastructureforcollecting,sortingand processingtheplasticintonew,usefulproducts.

Togetthesametypeofplasticafterrecycling,they needtobesortedbyresintype.Iftheplasticscanbe separated,asinthetwo-pieceliter-sizesoftdrink bottles,theycanberecycled,butseparationaddsto thecostofrecycling.Somerecyclerscantakea mixtureofalltypesofplastic,toproducepark benches,fenceposts,parkingstopsandwaterproof ``lumber''forpiers.Sometimesitisdifficulttotell differentplastictypesapart.Forthisreason,the plasticproducershavebeguntocodethecontainers theymakewithanumberindicatingthetypeof plasticresinusedtomakethecontainer.However, thereiscontroversyregardingthestandardsfor classifyingtheplastics. Atthepresent,itmaynotbepracticaltorecycle certaintypesofplastic.Forrecyclingtowork,there needstobeawell-functioning,economicallyfeasible, recyclingsystemtoconvertaparticularmaterialinto anothermarketableproduct.Polystyrene,forexample, isrecyclable,butthepercentageactuallyrecycledis limited.CLOSINGTHELOOPYouhaveadoubleroleinrecycling.Youprovide therawmaterialsfromyourtrash,and,equally important,youneedtobuytherecycledmaterialafter itismakeintosomethingnew. So,infact,recyclinghasnoend.Itprogressesin aloop,frompurchase,use,recycle,reformulate,and resale.Itisuptoyou,asanenviroshopper,tobuy recycledmaterialswheneveryoucan.Lookforthe recycledsymbolonpackagesyoubuy. Rememberthatuntillarge-scalemarketsare developed,recycledmaterialsmaycostmorethan new.Buteverytimeyoubuyarecycledproduct,you helptoincreasethemarketandbringdownthecost. Whenyouhelptomaintainthedemandforrecycled material,youalsomaintainthedemandforyour emptycontainersandworn-outgoodsinother words,ademandforyourtrash.Doyourpartto ``closetheloop''ofrecycling.
