It is hard to ignae the recent
intemational attention that Ja-
maica has been getting since
the nxirder of Brian Wllian>
son in early June of this year.
The attention, hcwe\/er, is
nothing short of appalling and
discouraging fa those who
seek to promote a Jamaica
that is a friendly, beautiful and
Wt\ Jamaican dancehall art-
ists coming under severe fire
from intemational advocacy
groups, the Jamaican govern-
ment seems to be ignaing
what is really brewing under
their nose. Some of the k^
happenings over the summer
include the cancellation of
several concert appearances
in the US. fa Beenie Man by
RJ R^dds, owners of the
'Salemf brand of cigarettes
among otha appearances in
Canada and Europe. The a-
ganisers of Britain's urban
nxisic avrard, MOBO, decided
to drop both Bephant Man
and \/)/tz Kartd from their
nominations because th^
have refused to apdogize fa
the vident anti-gay content of
thdr nxisic. And still the Ja-
maican authaities sleep...
In reality, it is Jamaica that is
bang scrutinized in the US,
Canada and Europe. One
may bdieve that it is the
dancehall industry and the
artists that are the only ones
who will pay. But with dose
analysis, one will realize that
the country in genaal will pay
a dear price because our
leaders have allowed and
continue to allow our 'dirty
laundry to be vrashed in inta-
national vratas. In a meeting
with No Mae Murda Music!,
which is a New York based
coalition of many globally rec-
ognized human rights agani-
sations including Human
Rghts \Afetch, the Gay and
Lesbian Alliance Against
Defamation (GJ\AD), and
Jamaica's own HotnessI
Newsletta, thae v\ere discus-
sions as to the next levd to
take these 'sanctions' against
the disainination bang met
out against gays and lesbians
in Jamaica It is also notevwx-
thy that Jamaica is a signatory
to the Lhivasal Dedaration of
Human Rghts, which dearly
states in Artide 7 that 'All are
equal befae the law and are
entitled without any discrimi-
nation to equal protedion of
the law. All are entitled to
equal protedion against any
discrimination in vidation of
this Dedaration and against
any indtement to such dis-
crimination.' Jamaica has not

The Back-To-Schod Drive by
HotnessI during August has
benefited some needy children
at a Kingston boy's home.
Schod supplies valued at
$25,000.00 v\ere donated by
three genaous hearts; Ivwd gay
Kingston residents and a Ja-
maican lesbian living in New
Yak. The supplies induded
schod b^s, noteboote, pen-
dls, pens, geometry sets,
among others. On recapt of
the supplies, the superinten-
dent of the boy's home ex-
pressed a true sense of grati-
tude. She emphasized the
importance of supporting the
Jamaican youths, espedally in
education. It is hope that this
initiative will continue and that
mae Jamaican gay men and
lesdans will take adive rdls
in hdping to aeate a new
shape fa Jamaica by posi-
tivdy impading on diffaent
aspeds of the sodety.

If the Bible sa^ homosexuality is a sin, vuhy shoJd the law not pinish homosexuals?
This is a very ddicate ques-
tion. Ddicate because most of
us Jamaicans v\ere brought
up unda good Christian prin-
dples. The truth is, the Bde
mentions many things as an
abomination, induding v\ear-
ing nixed fabrics. So when
you v\ear certain dothes, you
sin as nxch as a man who
has sex with anotha man a
an unvd man who has sex
with a vwsman. The Bde also
says divace is ungodly and
the list could go on and on.
Neverthdess, these are can-
monplace adions. Wien vras
the last time you heard that an

nicata vras stoned to death

high rate of teenage preg-

sure you will see them running

Health 5 Wellness
Wien most people think of
health issues, physical health
often comes to mind. But we
are more than physical enti-
ties. We are emotions,
thoughts and, in most people's
bdief, spirits. Snce our physi-
cal health inpads all these
otha spheres, it is a good
place to start when aeating a
balanced health regime. Snce
an ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure, our fo-
cus should be on propa det,
regular exerdse, and ade-
quate sleep. As menlDers of a
minority group, which is usu-
ally inviside and persecuted,
vje need to pay spedal atten-
tion to the next twD spheres of
our health, emotions and
thoughts. These frequently
get lunped togetha unda the
heading of "mental health".
Uifortunatdy, this label often
conjures up images of psychi-
atric evaluations and lengthy
thaapy rather than preventa-
tive strategies fa addressing
emotional upset, unwanted
thought patterns, and mental
lapses. It is wDrth noting that

Many Jamaicans, induding the
current prime ninista of Ja-
maica the Most Hon. RJ. Rat-
tason, have insinuated that ho-
mosexuality should be viewed
from a cultural stance and not
from a human rights pdnt of
view. Jamaica's culture is not
tdaant of homosexuality and
as a result, homosexual Jamai-
cans nxist live unda a regime
