Over 9,000 Employees and Family Members Hosted on Lago Family Day From 8 a.m. till 5 p.m. on Nov- ember 18, streams of visitors were constantly arriving at the starting point for Lago Family Day at the Administration Build- ing. With three sun shelters fill- ed with visitors, three buses each time took some 200 guests first to a 40-minute refinery tour. Then followed a period of relax- ation at the Esso Club where snacks and refreshments were served while the visitors were entertained by music of two Mariachi groups, the Mariachi Perla di Aruba and Lirios del Campo. The Lago Family Day, which attracted over 9,000 visitors, ended with a visit to the new Employee and Family Clinic in the Administration Building where a brief description and tour of the facilities were given by several guides. Here the guests also received a banner- type calendar for 1973 and de- posited the employee cards for taking part in the raffle of eight 19-inch General Electric TV sets. The eight lucky winners of the TV sets raffled during La- go's TV Program on November 19 were: Demetrio Koolman, Mechanical Materials; Navilia Adolfo, Medical-Administration; Emmanuel Oduber, Process- Fuels; Simeon Noguera, Mech- anical-Metal Trades; Carmelo A. Figaroa, Mechanical-Metal Tra- des; Amable F. Henriquez, Tech- nical-Lab Inspection; Juan H. Arends, Mechanical-Metal Tra- des; and John Hassell, Mech- anical-Contract Development. Assisting with the Family Day program were 31 employees. Of these, 22 were tour leaders who conducted 131 tours during the day. The "in- vasion" was marked by the ar- rival of the company's forty-five Volkswagen sedans, which re- placed the previous fleet of Vauxhall sedans in service since 1969. The brand-new cream colored cars offer several advantages over the previous fleet. They are more economical, require less maintenance and their compact size makes parking more con- venient anywhere in the refinery. They will be serviced monthly in the company's Garage Sec- tion in the southwest area of the Central Shops. It is planned to develop an automatic car wash- ing facility in the near future. Each vehicle has a service post on the driver's side to re- mind users to leave the car at the garage on the day preceding the service. Unlike Walt Disney's famous Love Bug, the company's "Love Bugs" don't have a mind of their own. After being assigned number plates by the Fleet Con- tract Coordinator of the Mech- anical-Maintenance & Construc- tion Division, they were releas- ed for service to the various divisions which frequently re- quire transportation for employ- ees on company business. The division assigned the most cars fifteen was Mechanical-Engineering, whose employees more often require transportation into the refinery and beyond the gates. And this is very true with Larry Van Aman from Esso Research in Florham Park who is assigned to Lago's HDS-2 Project as a senior field engineer. While in Aruba, Larry is again taking up his hobby of wood sculpturing, a hobby rarely practiced. At present Larry is working on one of his most difficult designs which he calls, "And God Creat- ed All Men Equal". It consists of two circles representing the longitudes of the globe with two figures inside depicting man helping man. This sculpting has already filled about 200 of Lar- ry's spare hours. Larry Van Aman, a sen- ior field engineer with the ERE team assigned to Lago's HDS-2 Project, is here with some of his sculptures. Through his special technique of hollowing out the fig- ures, he puts motion in- to his designs and ma- kes them "come to life". Larry Van Aman, un sen- ior field engineer den grupo di Esso Research asigna na Lago su Pro- yecto HDS-2, ta aki cu algun di su esculpturas. E ultimo trabao ta di ze- ta y puli e madera pa e haya su lustre natural". Fuera di escultura di madera, Larry a trata di haci escultura tambe di metal, y e ta gusta pin- ta cu verf di awa. Otro pasa- temponan di Larry ta hunga te- nis, golf, sambuya cu aqualong y ski riba awa cu su boto nobo. Wood Sculpture assignments in Thailand, Korea and Hawaii, Larry had a chance to try out several types of wood and different designs as inspir- ed by his new environment. As to the tools he uses and how he goes about preparing for a sculpture, Larry explains: "The best tool I have is my pocketknife. I also use chisels and a high-speed drill with sev- eral fine cutting tools. To start on a project, I draw a sketch of the object I have in mind, then with the 'right' piece of wood, I cut out the profile with a band- saw and do the refining work with chisels and pocketknife. The final work involves oiling and polishing the wood to its natural finish." In addition to wood sculptur- ing, Larry has also tried his hand at metal sculpturing. He al- so enjoys painting with water colors. Other hobbies Larry likes include tennis, golf, scuba div- ing and water skiing with his new boat. In his boyhood, Larry began carving with soap and later in wood. Though he had no for- mal training in this field, he dev- eloped his own style and tech- nique through the years. His first figures included animals and Walt Disney characters. La- '*ui ter he concentrated more on human forms and here he devel- "mun- oped his own special technique of hollowing out the figures to indicate motion. One of his larg- hh Y est sculptures is a three-foot bby high Hawaiian Tiki.
