Hydrodesulfurization Phase II Project To Expand Refining Control Center The Refining Control Center is being expanded and remodel- ed as part of the HDS-II Pro- ject. A new two-story structure will be added to the existing control center to house the ad- ded equipment and personnel required by the HDS-II Project. The new addition will increase floor space from the current 8,000 square ft. to about 20,000 square feet. The new section will contain a new General Electric DDC computer in its first floor, four new offices and new aircondi- tioning equipment for the entire building. The second floor will be fitted with instrument control panels and will have two new offices, lunch and locker facili- ties, an instrument repair room, a new radio room and storage space. The fully airconditioned build- ing is pressurized in order to keep out dust and trace gases which are corrosive to computer components. A smoke detection system will also be installed to minimize the chance of a small fire going undetected. Work began on March 13, 1972 with the excavation for foundations. Subcontractor Ro- bert Nahar has already installed the steel structure and Elga is building the roof. The radio to- wer has been relocated by In- dustrial Instruments & Electrical Equipment (II&EE), which will also be responsible for instal- ling and commissioning the new tower. The prime contractor, Arthur G. McKee, is coordinat- ing the overall job. The building required 250 cu- bic yards of concrete for found- ations, 119 tons of steel for framework and about 20,000 con- crete blocks for the walls. The project will require over 55,000 manhours of McKee per- sonnel and some 12,000 man- hours of construction forces of the subcontractors. Lago's Project Group for the expansion project includes Wim Diaz as Maintenance & Con- struction Coordinator; Clyde Persons, as Instrumentation Pro- ject Engineer (Clyde is present- ly working in the main contrac- tor's office in Cleveland); Ken Oliver, as Civil Project Engin- (Continued on page 3) October 6, 1972 tobr 17 Lago Assists in Art Exhibition a k aRWea nwoh Organized by Department of Culture SLago Oil & Transport Co., Ltd. Seferino Ridderstap, Fli anical employee wearing paratus emerge Employees Are Assured When Using Respiratory Some operations in industry, and specifically in the oil indus- try, may contaminate the air we breathe. This can happen through accidental releases of noxious or nuisance dusts, cor- rosive vapors, or toxic fumes and vapors. However, there are se- veral pieces of equipment spe- cially designed to protect em- ployees' health against the ef- fects of these releases. The following types of respi- ratory protective equipment are made available here at Lago to safeguard our employees' health. Each has its specific purpose and limitations. Canister-Type Gas Masks This equipment does not sup- ply fresh air. It only absorbs the gases which may have been mixed with the air. It draws the gas through a container a ca- nister which is filled with a chemical. This type should be used only in areas with low con- centrations of gas, a maximum of 25%/ in volume. It should not be used in oxygen deficient at- mosphere. After two hours con- tinuous use the chemical is de- activated, the canister gets hot and should be replaced. Fresh Air Hose Masks Fresh air hose masks must be used where it is necessary to to Bre Protel enter enclosed areas or spaces with heavy smoke, oxygen de- ficiency, inside a vessel which has contained toxic products and for sandblasting. The equip- ment consists of an electric or hand-driven air blower with the necessary hoses and face masks. A life line must be at- tached to the hose mask har- ness. Chemical Cartridge Respirator There are two types of car- tridges in use at Lago. The black cartridge which contains activated charcoal and protects against organic vapors, T.E.L., gasoline, etc. The yellow car- tridge contains activated char- coal and soda lime and protects against acid gases, organic va- pors and also smoke. This type of respirator may be used for all operations where annoying or irritating gases or fumes may be present in such small quantities (up to 0.2% in volume) that the canister gas mask is not needed, such as spray painting. It is recommend- ed for use only for exposure to gases which are not ordinarily considered harmful or are not present in harmful concentra- tions. It is also used where there is a nuisance of dust in the air, such as vanadium ash, cement, sulphur, PCAR catalyst or any other non-toxic dust. athe Clean Air ;tive Equipment Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus Lago has two types of this breathing apparatus. One is the Scott-Air-Pak unit, which gives 30 minutes of air supply. The other one is a smaller type which provides only 15 minutes of air supply. This self-contained breathing apparatus is a standard fresh air mask with air supply from a high pressure cylinder. It is to be us- ed for work of a special nature where a gas hazard or lack of oxygen exists or may exist and also to supplement oxygen masks during emergencies. This equipment is supplied to all pro- cess units for emergency use only. They are also available at the Central Tool Room. Maintenance is Essential One important factor should never be overlooked. All protec- tive equipment'should at all times be in proper operation condi- tion, ready for use. Therefore, they should be given proper maintenance, and their life limit- ation should be checked regu- larly. When in doubt, employees should take no chances, but use a gas mask. It is imperative to use the right mask for the right job.
