ARUBA ESSO NEWS Gerencia To Contesto Bo Pregunta Pa Contest: No. 5 Pa Pregunta: No. 3500 Management Answers Your Questions For Answers: Dial 5 For Questions: Dial 3500 Q. We want to know why Ma- nagement doesn't do some- thing about this tax problem. Because if a man works overtime, with half his pay going to the government, all his energy is gone. Why doesn't Lago make a propo- sition with the Government to collect this tax a little easier on the employees? Because mostly now, all em- ployees are refusing to work overtime, in all departments. I think Management should know about this. Do some- thing about It! A. Questions relating to Nether- lands Antilles income tax de- ductions from pay in 1971 have been reviewed by the concerned organizations. The following information should help clarify the mat- ter. The official higher N.A. per- sonal income tax rates for 1971 were given to Lago late in March 1971, and could not be applied until the April payrolls. However, the in- crease in tax rates was re- troactive to January 1, 1971; so in April 1971 it would have been necessary to take out of pay the higher taxes for all four months (January through April). After consi- dering this, it was believed best not to take all of the retroactive tax out of pay in one month (April) but to spread it over the remaining months in the year. As a re- sult, employees felt the ef- fect of the retroactive in- crease over the last nine months. In 1972 the deduc- tion for income tax is now normalized since there is no retroactive adjustment need- ed to be handled. In addition it seems that all employees were not familiar with the amount of the in- crease in income tax which resulted from the applicat- ion of the new rates under the new law. In order that employees will be more aware of the income tax that applies to various levels of earnings, we dis- tributed with the January pay statements an income tax table showing the rates that went into effect January 1, 1971. Of those employees who may have received refunds for too much tax collected in 1971, most found them- selves in this situation be- cause they had not advised the Compact Section of changes in amount of their estimated outside income or of changes in the number of their children. The Comptroller's Depart- ment has already provided employees with a Statement of Earnings for the year 1971, the amount of tax with- held, and related informat- ion. If you have any quest- ions, you should contact the Compact Section. There is no question of the Company paying its taxes to the Government with the in- come tax money of emplo- yees. First, it would be dif- ficult to do. Second, it would be illegal. Third, and the most important reason, La- go would not even consider doing such a thing since it would be morally wrong. Q. I would like to know why there are so many acting supervisors? A. The number of acting su- pervisors is based on job requirements and the avail- ability of regular supervisors. Both vary from week to week. By permitting a significant number of employees to "act up" more have the op- portunity for promotion when there is a vacancy. Q. How Is it that there is mo- ney to build houses for Ma- nagement members and there Isn't any for regular employees? A. Approval or rejection of ap- plications for home building loans is not confined to ma- nagement members. Any em- (Continued on page 8) P. Nos kier sabi pakiko geren- cia no ta haci algu tocante di e problema di belasting. Pasobra si un hende traha overtime, cu mitar di su pa- go bayendo pa gobierno, tur su energia a bai. Pakiko La- go no ta haci un areglo cu gobierno pa cobra belasting un poco menos for di em- pleadonan? Pasobra awen- dia casi tur empleadonan ta nenga di traha overtime den tur departamento. Mi ta kere cu gerencia mester sabi al- gu di e asuntu aki. Pone man na obra! C. Preguntanan tocante kita belasting for di pago di em- pleadonnan den Antillas Hu- landes na 1971 a word re- visa cu e organisacionnan envolvi. Sigiente informa- cion por juda clarifica e pun- to aki: E tarifanan pa Antillas Hu- landes cual a subi oficial- mente pa anja 1971, a wor- de entrega na Lago na Maart 1971, y compania no por a cuminza kita nan for di pa- go di empleadonan te April. Sinembargo aumento di Be- lasting tabata retroactive te January 1971, asina ta cu na April 1971 lo tabata necesa- rio pa kita for di sueldonan e belasting aumenta pa tur e cuater lunanan (esta (Ja- nuari te April inclusive). Des- pues di a consider esaki, Compania a decidi cu taba- ta mihor di no kita tur e be- lasting retroactive for di sueldo den un luna so (April) pero pa repartid ariba e lu- nanan cu ainda tabata keda den e anja. Compania sigur no ta paga su mes belasting na Gobier- no cu placa di belasting ki- ta for di empleadonan. Pa di promer lo ta dificil pa haci esey. Pa di dos esey lo ta illegal. Pa di tres, y e mo- tibo mas important, Lago nunca ni sikiera lo consider haci un cos asina pasobra e ta moralmente malu. P. Santa Cruz Senior Citizens Stop At Lago during A long row of about forty-four cars, escorted by two police- men on motorcycles, entered the Grapefield Gate on Satur- day morning, July 29, en route to the Esso Club. Passengers in the private cars, on an island tour, were 133 Santa Cruz se- nior citizens accompanied by the Santa Cruz Parish Assist- ance Foundation members and a group of volunteers. Ranging in age from 65 to 80, the Santa Cruz elders, who look forward to this yearly excursion, Island Excursion hailed from all areas of Santa Cruz, from Seroe Biento to Maria Maai, from Papilon to Kas Ari- ba, including Jan Flemming, Ma- cuarima, Sabana Grandi and San Fuego. The group includ- ed several Lago annuitants and their wives. The tour began about 8:30 a.m. at the Catholic Church at Santa Cruz and continued to the Savaneta Camp where the visitors were hosted by the ma- rines, and on to the Esso Club where they were treated to snacks and refreshments. After resting a while they drove on through the refinery to San Ni- colas, and on to the new Air- port Terminal. They stopped briefly at the Strand Hotel where they were served refresh- ments and proceeded to view the sea-side hotels and other sites of interest which included the St. Ann's Church at Noord. The highlight of the tour was a party at the Santa Cruz Credit Union Building where they danced to the music of the ty- pical Aruban tingi-lingi box (bar- rel organ). The sight-seeing trip ended with a mass at the Tanki Leendert Church about 6:30 p.m. This pleasant day dedicated to Santa Cruz senior citizens is organized yearly by the Santa Cruz Parish Assistance Found- ation which is presided by Flo- riano Geerman, a Mechanical Supervisor in Mechanical-M&C.
