iod of more than three years.
In presenting the API award,
Mr. Johnston commended the
M&C employees on this out-
standing achievement: ,,Manage-
ment is proud of such a magni-
ficent record, built up over an
extended period during which
the M&C tradesmen and super-
visors have worked on several
major and minor unit turn-
arounds, doing both shop and
field work"

alone, involving the units of the
Light Hydrocarbons Division in

On a world-wide basis, Lago's
M&C men are now in second
place, with their current posi-
tion being excelled by M&C per-
sonnel of only one U.S. refin-
ery which holds a record of
over 4,000,000 manhours of in-
jury-free job performance.
Division Superintendent Walt
Terrell commented on this re-
cord: "We're pleased that the
M&C personnel, by being atten-
tive to safety, have been able to
avoid uncomfortable, painful,
crippling injuries and are there-
by able to continue to work ef-
fectively and efficiently on the
job."

With Building of
The Foundation Parish Coun-
cil Paradera was awarded a do-
nation from Lago recently. La-
go's president, Mr. Roy L. Trus-
ty, made the presentation to the
foundation's president, Mr. Hol-
mo Henriquez, while visiting the
premises of the organization
near the parish church of Pa-
radera.
"We are pleased to help your
organization and admire your
initiative for undertaking this
large construction project for
the benefit of the people of Pa-
radera", Mr. Trusty said. Mr.
Henriquez was thankful for La-
go's confidence in the work of
the foundation.

Recreation Center
With Lago's contribution, the
foundation will be able to con-
tinue its FIs. 121,000 construc-
tion project: a recreation center
for the residents of Paradera
and surroundings, especially the
youth. Construction on the first
phase a main building hous-
ing a recreation room, confer-
ence room, wash rooms and
storage space is almost com-
plete. This was built with funds
raised from two fairs held last
year.

The foundation hopes to start
soon on the second phase of
the project. In addition to the
concrete-block fence now being
built, the following facilities are
planned: a covered area for use
as a theater, a court for tennis,
basketball and volleyball and a
patio for dancing.

lix R. Croes, Vice-President and
Treasurer, respectively, and Miss
Iselia Lacl6, Secretary, also at-
tended the ceremony. Messrs.
LeRoy Johnston, Lago's Vice-

P.R. Administrator, were also
present.

Founded on April 6, 1967, the
Foundation Parish Council Pa-
radera renders assistance to the
clergy of the Filomena Church
at Paradera. Another aspect of
its program is to promote the
material, social, cultural, and
spiritual well-being of the parish
in general and its residents in
particular.

Coruba DOMUS Supermarket Opens In Former Commissary Building


After about a year of prepa-
ration with the assistance of Dr.
Jack Amos of the Latin Ameri-
can Technical Institute of Co-
operative Integration (Latici),
CORUBA opened its supermar-
ket for its over 1500 members
and the public on June 9. The
inauguration was performed by
Miss Bets de Kort, one of the
hard workers for credit unions,
in the presence of Lt. Governor
0. S. Henriquez, Lago Execu-
tive Management members, the
Coruba board and a large num-
ber of members.
Known officially as "Aruban
Cooperative Consumers Associ-
ation Supermarket Coruba G.A.",
the first cooperative supermar-
ket of its kind in Aruba oper-
ates under a board of admini-
stration. This board consists of
Julian (Ildo) B. Croeze, presi-
dent, Ferdinand Groeneveldt,
Hyacintho Geerman, with F. Luis
M. Wever as manager, and Mrs.
Vera Feliciano as secretary.
Organized with the backing of
the credit unions and labor
unions on the island, the foun-
ders of the cooperative super-
market on December 1, 1971
are: Julian B. Croeze, an ac-


countant at Lago; Leocadio C.
Stamper, teacher; Ferdinand E.
Groeneveldt, Lago employee;
Hyacintho Geerman, Lago em-
ployee; Frank E. Tromp, union
leader; Victor M. Cilie, Lago em-
ployee; F. Luciano M. Wever and
F. Baron Strijdhaftig, civil ser-
vants; and Clarence D. Richard-
son, union leader.
The association is composed
of a commercial side and a
parliamentary side. The com-
mercial side includes a director-
ate and employees, with ildo
Croeze as president. The par-
liamentary side represents the
members and is under presiden-
cy of Hyacintho Geerman.
All members of Coruba have
already received a copy of the
Articles of Association, a mem-
bership card, a shareholder card
and a charg-a-plate.
"In addition to offering mode-
rate prices to all customers, the
members will have the benefit
of receiving a discount (called
"Fondo Paga Vista") on their
total purchases for the year. It
will also be possible to make
collective purchases of house-

Tennis Tournament With 6-3 Score


The 26th annual Shell/Esso
Tennis Tournament was held on
the Seroe Colorado Lone Palm
Tennis Courts on May 27/28.
The nine matches for the Shell/
Esso Challenge Trophy ended in
a 6-3 victory for the Esso team.
Members of the Esso team
were Lago employees or family
members of employees or an-
nuitants.


In addition to the sporting
events, the Shell guests were
entertained at recreational and
social activities. After the mat-
ches, on Sunday night, a cock-
tail party and dinner were held
in honor of the visiting team
during which Lago's Vice Pre-
sident LeRoy Johnston present-
ed the challenge cup to the Es-
so Captain, Dr. Leo de Heer.

Presence of Mind, Safety Program

Help Two Boys Save Brother's Life


Courage, quick action and
fast recollection of a safety pro-
gram helped Ireno Maduro (14
years) and Gabriel (13) of Brasil
87-B save their little brother, 7-
year-old Juan, from drowning.
The accident happened on
Sunday, April 30, 1972, when
four brothers of the Maduro
family (including 10-year-old
Marco Maduro) were gathering
sea shells on the sand piled up
by the dredge "Georgia" at Cu-
ra Cabal. Little Juan, called Chi-
to, was playing with a toy boat
standing on a piece of pipe.
Suddenly he slipped off the pipe
and fell into the water. Soon he
disappeared under the milky
surface. Marco, who did not
see his brother come up again,
panicked and ran home to ad-
vise his mother. But the elder
brothers, Gabriel and Ireno, div-
ed into the 8-ft. deep sea and
began searching. Unable to see
in the muddy water, they were
groping about until, out of sheer
luck, Ireno managed to get hold
of Chito and brought him to the
surface, aided by Gabriel.
They brought the lifeless body


ashore, with the child's face al-
ready turning blue The two
brothers immediately began rol-
ling him on the ground and then
used the back pressure arm-lift
method This made the boy
throw up sea water. Then Ireno
remembered the mouth-to-mouth
breathing technique he had once
seen on a TV program at a
neighbor's. (This program evi-
dently was one of Lago's safety
programs presented every Mon-
day afternoon from 6 to 6:30 on
Tele-Aruba. The film was "Res-
cue Breathing").
After Chito had vomited some-
what, Ireno continued blowing
fresh air into his brother's
lungs, while pinching the nose.
Continuing their efforts for about
five minutes, they saw that their
brother began to regain con-
sciousness.
Their immediate resuscitation
efforts saved their brother's life
and spared the alarmed parents
from grief for the loss of a son.
After two days in the hospital,
little Chito was once again a
sprightly boy, although a little
more wary of the sea.

Main Entrance Gets Facelifting; 800 Meter Wall Built West of Gate 1


Lago's refinery fence beauti-
fication program continues with
the new look recently given to
the Main Gate and the con-
struction of over 2600 ft. of wall
west of Gate No. 1. On both
sides of the main gate, a new
design with decorative blocks
was installed to give the en-
trance a more attractive appear-
ance.
In addition to improving sce-
nic health, the white wall offers
greater safety than the wire
fence for both the San Nicolas
community and Lago.
The new section of concrete
block wall runs from the Main
Gate to beyond the former
Commissary building to the
Acid Plant substation and main-
tains the standard height of 9
feet.
Virgo General Contractor was
awarded the contract for con-
structing the fence, gate front
and the extension of the Gate 2
parking lot. The project, which


began in December last year, is
scheduled to be completed in
July 1972.
One of the benefits of the
new wall will be the elimination
of the blind corner just west of
Wimco. To improve traffic saf-
ety at this corner, the original
Lago fence has been moved in-
wards about 7 ft. to provide a
better view to motorists of the
oncoming traffic from the west.
In the past, the driver's view
was very limited at this corner.
In addition, pedestrians will
have an additional 180 square
feet of wakway for greater saf-
ety at this corner.
The entire fence replacement
program started in 1968 and is
planned to be completed in 1973
with an approximate cost of
$700,000 to Lago.
The above work is carried
out under the direction of Leo-
nard Peterson of Mechanical-
Project Engineering Section.


At a former blind corner west of WIMCO In San Nicolas, the Lago
fence will be moved inwards (at the unfinished wall section) to
provide better view to motorists of the oncoming traffic from the
west and more walkway for pedestrians.
