Croes, Dirks, Jarzagaray, Leo Promoted March 1st


Four promotions were an-
nounced in the Process Depart-
ment effective March 1. In the
Fuels Division, Martines S. Leo
became Process Foreman, while
Johannes D. Croes and Juan
Jarzagaray advanced to Shift
Foremen and attained manage-
ment status. Luisito Dirks was
named Coordinator in the Oil
Movements Division Agency &
Documentation, and also be-
came a management member.


Marines enrolled in the Lago
Vocational School in 1946, after
attending the St. Dominicus
College in Oranjestad. After
graduating from the LVS, he was
assigned as an Electrician Hel-
per B in Mechanical-Electrical,
where he progressed to Electri-
cian Helper A a year later. For
the past nineteen years, he has
been in the Process Depart-


ment, to which he transferred as
a Process Helper C in Crack-
ing. After advancing to House-
man in 1956 and to Levelman
in 1959, he was promoted to
Assistant Operator in 1963.
A promotion in 1965 made
him an Operator in the Refining
Division, where in 1968 he ad-
vanced to Shift Foreman. Dur-
ing the past two years he was
assigned twice to the HDS Di-
vision in connection with the

training and Hydrogen Plant
startup.
Marines, who helped phase
in the new Automatic Telephone
Exchange at Lago, has wide ex-
perience in the field of crude
distillation and visbreaking, and
Naphthenic Acid Processing. He
was also Maintenance Coordina-
tor for the Fuels Division, and


was instructor for the Process
Training program.
In his own time he took a
Basic Chemistry and Petroleum
Course at the John F. Kennedy
School in 1958. At Lago he fol-
lowed many courses, including
Petroleum Refining, Effective
Management, Kepner Tregoe
and Effective Business Writing.
He also attended the Hydrogen
Plant Training program conduct-
ed at Esso Research & Engin-

eering Company, Florham Park,
N.J. last year.
Martines enjoys boating, and
plans to build his own cabin
cruiser. An enthusiastic bowler,
he is member of the Esso Bow-
ling League. On his next vaca-
tion he plans to visit Mexico.
He and his wife Angelica and
14-year-old daughter, Daphne,
live at Savaneta.

Johannes Croes, who has
over thirty years of Lago service,
started as a Mechanical Appren-
tice A in the company's Laun-
dry. In 1942, he was drafted in-
to the army, but joined the
Pressure Stills as a Process Hel-
per D after leaving military ser-
vice in 1945. He became a Hou-
seman in 1948, and Levelman
in 1952 in the Cracking & Lt
Ends Department. An Assistant
Operator since 1954, Johannes
was promoted to Operator in
1965. Prior to his recent promo-
tion, he had acted in the posi-
tion of Shift Foreman on various
occasions.
Courses which he took at La-
go include a Process Training
Program and a Computer Train-
ing Course at the Refining Con-
trol Center. Through a corres-
pondence course, he obtained a

certificate recently. He complet-
ed the home-study course in
about two years, while dedicat-
ing some twelve to eighteen
hours of study per week to com-
plete the 56-lesson course. The
subjects of the course include
basic electricity, mathematics
and electronics.

Turnaround Work Progressing on Units of Light Hydrocarbons Division


Repair and maintenance work is pro-
gressing on several units of the Light
Hydrocarbons Division, with some
175 Mechanical tradesmen and su-
pervisors handling several types of
Jobs. The Cat Plant turnaround team
began on the Division's largest unit,
the PCAR, on March 6. In the pict-

A. Regarding the question
whether one gets the same
gasoline at the Esso Service
Stations when asking for ex-
tra or regular, the answer is
no! Esso markets two dis-
tinct grades of gasoline, na-
mely, Regular, with 87 oc-
tane, and Extra, with 95 oc-
tane. Every couple of years,
however, when one of the
gasoline tanks in Lago is ta-
ken out of service for repairs,
then, for a short period, only
one grade would be avail-
able. The grade available,
when a tank is out of service,
will always be Esso Extra.

Q. My question Is the following:
Why doesn't Lago permit
employees who complete 25th
service anniversary to select
their own watch of the make
of their choice at the same
value of the Omega?

A. Service anniversary gifts
should be the same for
everybody who is eligible.
This applies to the service
emblem as well as the watch.
We have selected the present
watch for its high quality and
dependability and the fact
that it is well accepted and
preferred by a majority of the
recipients. We therefore see
no need to change or allow
employees to select another
type of watch. Personal pre-
ference, of course, will not
increase the quality of one
watch.

Survivors and victims of 5010-ton Brazilian freighter "Barao de
Maua', which caught fire following an explosion about 80 miles
north of Aruba early March 14, are taken ashore in Oranjestad Har-
bor. The Swedish Johnson Line "Antonia Johnson" arrived in Aruba
on March 14 with 26 crewmen, including two dead and four badly
injured. On hand to assist was also the Red Cross Brigade under
leadership of Jean Balz of Lago's Mechanlcal-M&C.

Scuba-Diver Lioe-A-Tjam Captures

Another Monster: 350-lb. Jewfish 9i


Another exceptional catch
made recently by spearfishing
enthusiast Joseph L. ("Neuw")
Lioe-A-TJam, an assistant oper-
ator in Process-HDS Division,
was a 350-lb. jewfish. This is
not the first time Neuw captured
a jewfish. He has several of
these big catches on his list,
including a 500-lb. jewfish he
caught off Balashi a few years
back.
This time Neuw was accom-
panying Boy Boezem, Urbano
Kock and Guy Peterson (an ex-
Lago employee) on a scuba-div-
ing adventure to look for lob-
sters at a distance south of Se-
roe Colorado Point. At a depth
of about 20 fathoms, he discov-


ered a Jewfish under a rock.
Aiming his gun at the fish, he
killed the huge fish by one single
shot right in the neck area. It
took the four men some effort
to get the over 5-foot long jew-
fish in their boat. But when they
arrived ashore west of the Esso
Club, it took some five men to
carry the heavy catch for weigh-
ing on an Esso Club scale and
later to their pickup.

Neuw, who enjoys fishing as
a hobby, frequently goes out
with his fishermen friends to
spearfishing grounds off the Se-
roe Colorado Point where they
hunt for lobsters, conchs and
barracudas.

age 75. He had worked in Process-Cracking and retired on
December 1, 1952 with over 27 years of service.
JUAN A. E. (Choll) MADURO, died In Curagao in February 1972
at age 68. He was employed in Process-Utilities and retired
from Lago on November 13, 1954. He had over 21 years of
company service.
JAN J. R. (Rudy) BEAUJON, died in the U.S.A. In February 1972
at age 55. He had worked in Mechanlcal-M&C and left on
retirement on February 1, 1967 with almost 30 years of service.
