Lago Invites Aruba Executive Council to Review Current Activities


Recently Aruba's Executive
Council was guest of Lago's
management. The authorities
heard a presentation on Lago's
current activities by President
R. L. Trusty and discussed the
Hydrodesulfurization Project -
Phase II presented by the HDS
Project General Manager H. V.
Mowell.

C Alders, M. Croes, R. Frank,
V. Kock and Island Secretary
A. J. Booi, arrived at 10:30 Fri-
day morning at the General Of-
fice Building. They were met by
Messrs. Trusty, Vice-President
L. Johnston, Public & Industrial
Relations Manager B. E. Nixon,
and Public Relations Admini-
strate 0. V. Antonette.

After the information sessions,
the visitors were taken on a
tour of the refinery and the sites
where the new expansion will be
built. The visit was concluded
with a luncheon offered by La-
go's management to the distin-
guished guests.

Effective March 1, 1972 Mar-
ciano (Rocky) Angela was prom-
oted to Division Superintendent-
Materials. Effective the same
date, M. E. Soderston went on
a special assignment on the
HDS-2 Project.
Rocky began with Lago In
September 1949 as an appren-
tice. After graduating from the
Lsgo Vocational School in
1953, he was awarded a one-
year scholarship at the Allen-
town High School. Back at La-
go, he joined the instrument
Craft as Instrument Helper A. In
1956 he entered Cornell Univer-
sity with a Teagle Scholarship.
After obtaining his bachelor of
science degree in Electrical En-
gineering, he returned to Lago
as an Engineer in Technical-En-
gineering in 1961.
In 1964 he was named Coor-
dinator for the Aruba Chemical


Industries and that same year
in March, he advanced to Su-
pervising Engineer. He is the
first staff employee to attain
this position.
Subsequently, in 1967 he
worked as Process Foreman in
Process-Refining. In May, 1969,
Rocky went on a one-year as-
signment in Germany as Project
Engineer on the HDS team In
Frankfurt am Main, the head of-
fice of the main contractor for
the HDS Project.
Rocky has wide experience
in Mechanical and worked In all
sections of Mechanical Engin-
eering Division and has held the
position of Zone Supervisor in
Mechanical-M&C since 1969.
In addition to several courses
at Lago, Rocky followed an
Electrical Distribution course in
Call, Colombia, and attended two

Armando De Cuba was
originally employed as a La-
borer D in Mechanical-Elec-
trical in 1942. In 1944 he
moved up to Electrician Hel-
per B and two years later
advanced to Electrician Hel-
per "A".
Mr. De Cuba progressed
to Electrician C in 1955. His
promotion to Electrician A
went into effect in 1962. This
title was changed to Equip-
ment Tradesman A in 1967.
Mr. De Cuba celebrated his
30th service anniversary on
February 9.

Jeronimo B. Kelly joined
Lago in 1942 as a Laborer D
in the Labor Department. He
later transferred to the Pipe
Department where he ad-
vanced to Laborer A in 1943.
In 1946, after two years of
military service, he returned
to the Pipe Department
where he became Pipefitter
Helper B in 1948. He pro-
gressed to Pipefitter Helper
A in 1951.

Several Types of Protective Equipment Are Made

nerable of all.
It is also the one called upon
to help protect all the other four,
but is it the one that is most ex-
posed to all kinds of environ-
mental situations and influences.
It is also the one that is apt to
get perhaps too close to harm-
ful objects while it is unprotect-
ed. The eyes are protected only
by the eyelids, consisting of
flesh and a membranous tissue.
Although man is gifted with
two eyes, both may be simul-
taneously hurt by impact from
objects, the rays of injurious
light (the sun or arc welding)
and the spray of liquids.
For industrial use, where
these harmful conditions could
not have been designed out of
the system, safety engineers
have developed a number of
impact breakers or goggles that
have saved the eyes of millions.
For safeguarding the eyes of
its employees, Lago has more
than a half dozen different types
of safety goggles, as the job
may require. The Central Tool
Room, at all times, has the fol-
lowing eye protective equipment
on hand:


for protection against heavy im-
pact where relatively large ob-
jects could fly around while
chipping, cutting, grinding, or
when drilling or breaking con-
crete.
Moderate Impact Goggles
These are spectacle type gog-
gles with side shields. They
provide protection against the
impact of flying objects while
performing moderately heavy or
light work such as machining or
sealing, where the object may
come from the front or side.
Moderate Impact Goggles, with-
out Side Shield
These are spectacle type gog-
gles without side shields for use
where there is relatively little
hazard that objects may hit the
worker, except from directly in
front.
Protection against Liquid
Splashes
For protecting employees'
eyes against liquid splashes,
the company provides rubber
mask goggles. They offer pro-
tection against splashes of in-
jurious liquids, such as chem-
icals and oils. They also afford
some protection against dust as
well as moderate and light-im-
pact hazards.


For these types of hazards,
rubber mask goggles without
ventilators offer protection
against vapors and gases where
no respiratory protection is ne-
cessary. They also give positive
protection against dust as well
as moderate and light impact
hazards.
Protection against Welding
Flashes and Sparks
To protect welders against
flashes when performing acety-
lene burning and arc-welding
jobs, there is a specially shiel-
ded goggle with a special lens
which protects the eyes against
flashes, sparks or hot welding
chips. Electric welding hoods
with special lenses are also
available for welders and their
helpers.
Special Coverall Goggles
These are supplied for use
for employees who wear pres-
cription glasses. They fit over
ordinary glasses and may be
fitted with different lenses to
provide protection against re-
flected welding rays and glare.
Shields for Additional Protection
For work on some machines
or in field work, a plastic shield
should also be used as additio-

a Safety .Prescription Glasses
Program. In this program, an
employee, after the necessary
examination at the Medical De-
partment has indicated the need
for prescription glasses, and af-
ter a review and approval of his
eligibility by the division super-
intendent and the Safety Sec-
tion, is entitled to a pair of
prescription glasses with safety
lenses at company expense.
Although eye injuries can be
caused in so many different
ways, Lago provides its employ-
ees with eye protection to pre-
vent nearly all eye Injuries, pro-
vided the right type of goggle is
used.
As with any protective equip-
ment, the wearer must check
first if the goggle Is in good
condition and the lenses are
clean.
One thing to remember is that
goggles can be replaced, but
your eyes can never be replaced
by identical ones.

community.
Emphasis will be placed on studies leading to a Bachelor's
Degree in the sciences or liberal arts, or equivalent.
