Aruba, Netherlands Antlles -We VOL 32 No. 21 Maintenance & Construction Men Set New Worldwide Jersey Safety Record During a gathering in the Mechanical Shops on Friday af- ternoon, October 8, 1971, Lago President R. L. Trusty addres- sed a group of Mechanical De- partment employees. The occasion was the first presentation of special safety awards in the form of transistor radios to Maintenance & Con- struction (M&C) personnel in recognition of their achievement of over 2.5 million manhours without a disabling injury. This broke the Jersey worldwide safety record for this type of work The presentations were made by President Trusty and Mechanical Manager K. L. Weill. Addressing a group of out- standing safety performers, Mr. Trusty remarked "It is with a great deal of pride that I am making the presentations today to a group with outstanding in- dividual safety records. Lago is one of the safest refineries in the world, and this is proven by your achievements which we are recognizing today, Through safety awareness for over two and a half years, you have set a new Jersey record - in fact today, you already reached 2.6 million manhours. This represents exceptional per- formance. Having set a new re- cord we must not be tempted to relax our effort. We have to intensify our safety awareness so that we can keep up our reputation of being the world's safest refinery." On behalf of Lago's Manage- ment group, Mr. Trusty congra- tulated all Maintenance & Con- struction personnel for reach- ing this milestone in safety. The first to be presented with the special safety award was Goy L. Frank, an Instru- ment/Electrical Planner, who has a perfect safety record of 38 years, the highest in M&C. After graduating in 1948, he began working as an Inspector helper "B" in Tech- nical-Engineering, where he ad- vanced to equipment inspector trainee "A" in 1953. Two years later he became a junior en- gineering assistant "A". In 1960, Toy advanced to en- gineering assistant "A" and in 1968, was promoted to senior engineering assistant, the posi- tion he held prior to his Octo- ber 1 promotion. Courses followed by Toy dur- ing these years include an Ad- vanced Television & Industrial Electronics course, Process Training, selected units of the ICS Mechanical Engineering course, an Ultrasonic Testing & Weld Inspection course in Pitts- burgh, Penna., and most recent- ly the Elements of Metallurgy course. In his spare time, he keeps his stamp and coin collection up to date, reads or goes swim- ming. The proposal was published in the July issue of the Chron- icle, and to date over 180 re- plies have been received from the United States, Canada and Europe overwhelmingly favoring Aruba as the site of a reunion. It is planned to offer a pack- age tour, including air trans- portation, hotel accommodation, transfers, from both the U.S.A. and Europe, if there is suffi- cient interest. The tentative date is the last week of May, 1973. If any annuitants, who do not receive the Church Chronicle, would be interested in attending the reunion, they should notify Mrs. K. O. Oliver, Box 628, Se- roe Colorado, Aruba, Nether- lands Antilles, not later than January 31, 1972, giving their name and address. ARUBA ESSO NEWS October 22. 1971 October 22 1971ARUBA ESSO NEWS Carlos Bislip Elected President Of the Pan American Judo Union His 11-year Judo activity in Aruba took Carlos Bislip, an en- gineering technician in Mech- anical Engineering Division, to this year's World Judo Champ- ionship in Ludwigshafen, Ger- many. But he had yet another important business to attend during the championship from August 30 to September 1. Each of the five Judo Unions had to hold a congress in this period to elect their Executive Committee. The Pan-American Judo Union convened on August 31 and elected Carlos their president out of four candidates for a 2-year term. Carlos had prev- iously been assistant general secretary of the Pan-American Judo Union from 1967 to 1969 In this new capacity, Carlos will help direct the Judo activi- ties of 22 national federations from North, Central and South America and of the Caribbean. Carlos attended the Pan Ame- rican Union Congress as vice- president of the Antillean Judo Federation of which he has been either president or vice ISL~hB^ A, -- j president from 1963 up to the present. This is the first time an An- tillean has been elected to this high post in the Judo world. During his six-week vacation, Carlos also visited Holland, Ger- many and Spain. Carlos represented the An- tilles at several Pan American Judo Union and international Judo Federation congresses as a delegate, such as in Guate- mala (1965), in Canada and the U.S.A. (1967), in Mexico (1969), and in Germany this year. In 1970, he attended the Pan-Ame- rican Judo Union champion- ships in Brazil as a team coach. After a modest start with the San Nicolas Judo Club in 1962, the Judo sport spread to almost all of the districts of Aruba. With a total membership of over'250, the Judo organizations have regular weekly training sessions in .San Nicolas, Dutch Marines Camp, Santa Cruz and Oranjestad. Baiz of Mechanical-M&C Installed As Aruba Red Cross 1st Lieutenant On Friday night, October 15, the Aruba Red Cross installed its second officer to take charge of the 60-member bri- gade, 35 men and 25 ladies. This new officer is Jean H. E. Baiz, a senior engineering as- sistant in Mechanical-M&C Gen- eral, who has been an ensign since March last year and has been promoted to 1st Lieuten- ant effective October 1, 1971. The official installation cere- mony took place at the Red Cross headquarters at Dakota in the presence of the Red Cross Board and of the brigade under command of Major Dr. A. D. Zijderveld. The installation ceremony in- cluded the affixing of two gold- plated stars on each of Jean's epaulets by Commander Zijder- veld. On this occasion, also Serge- ant J. E. Orman was promoted to sergeant-major and Corporals H. Pablo and F. Angela to the sergeant rank. An active member of the or- ganization since 1956, Lt. Baiz will continue directing the ac- tivities of the Red Cross. Some of their regular activities include training sessions every Friday night at the headquarters given by Dr. Zijderveld (First Aid), Nurse L. Ecury of Lago Hospi- tal (General Nursing) and Lt. Baiz (Ambulance Transportation and Bandaging); and lifeguard duties along the Eagle Beach every Saturday (from 2 to 6 p.m.) and every Sunday (from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). The Red Cross brigade plans to hold field exercises simul- ating an explosion and fire near ACI's fertilizer plant.
