Senior Lab Assistant Clemente ZIevinger has a dally Job of making standardized chemical solutions for HDS units. Senior Lab Assistant Clemente Zlevinger tin e trabso diarlo dl traha soluclonnan qulmico pa unldadnan dl HDS. After mechanical completion of the HDS units and when pre- startup work began on all the fourteen new units and there- after, many of the personnel of the Laboratories were quietly contributing their share to each successful startup. In fact, the lab assistants, lab technicians and supervisors were handling thousands of samples and tests to make the startups possible. The result of their efforts helped give the "Go" signal for each unit. Many of the tests were new and required the use of several new lab instruments on which the personnel of the Analytical and Inspection Sections had to be trained. It was the duty of the Analytical Section to devel- op and set up these new test methods and procedures. Some of the tests were very critical for a safe startup and operation. At the Hydrogen Plants, for instance, a large num- ber of tests were run to verify that the sulfur content of the feed was less than 1.0 parts per million. This sulfur testing was done using special sampling techniques which had to be dev- eloped, and using a new Wick- bold oxygen-hydrogen combus- tion sulfur apparatus. Incorrect test results could cause severe damage to the high-cost catal- yst. Also very important were the thousands of tests made on the boiler feed water, deaerated water, steam condensates, boi- ler water and process water on the Hydrogen Plants. Other tests for the hydrogen units included testing the cata- carb solutions using a new po- tentiograph or automatic titro- meter, foaming test on polypro- pylene pall rings used in the catacarb towers, and analyzing gas mixtures using the gas chromatographs. For the startup of the other units on the HDS site, numer- ous tests had to be performed on the various streams of the Vacuum Pipestill and the Gas Oil, Kero and Naphtha Hydro- finers, such as metals analysis and vacuum distillations. Many tests were run also on sour wa- ter samples and MEA solutions to help control corrosion. For the startup of the three new Tosi boilers installed at Powerhouse No. 1 a large num- ber of tests had to be perform- ed by the Lab personnel. To provide round the clock service, the Analytical Section had to switch to three-shift ope- ration to assist the Process startup personnel. With the HDS units now in their initial run, the Analytical Section will continue assisting in special tests, while most of the routine work will be grad- ually taken over by the inspec- tion Section personnel. As with other products, the Lab personnel now have some special end products to give their quality mark to: Several grades of low sulfur fuel oil.
