Governor Henriquez Inaugurate HDS Complex In a special ceremony on August 20, 1971, Lago's FIs. 175,000,000 Hydrodesulfurization Complex was officially inaugur- ated. The inaugural act took place at 5 p.m. at the site of the new complex where the Gover- nor of the Netherlands Antilles, Drs. B. M. Leito, cut a ribbon and unveiled a commemoration plaque. Following this, Lt. Gov- ernor of Aruba O. S. Henriquez symbolically started the plant by turning a switch. Assisting in the inauguration ceremonies was Vallita Maduro, Miss Aruba 1971. The special program for guests started in the Administra- tion Building where Lago's Pre- sident Roy L. Trusty welcomed the guests and commented on the significance of the new plant. Said he: "The HDS complex represents the time and talent of many people from Aruba and from around the world... More important than the hardware, the project represents an achie- vement that was made possible by excellent cooperation be- tween industry and government." In his speech, Mr. Trusty gave special recognition to Lago em- ployees: "The startup of our new units represents one of the most significant accomplish- ments in Lago's history. Most of the credit for one of the most successful and safest large pro- ject startups in the history of Standard Oil Company of New Jersey must go to our Lago em- ployees who accepted full res- ponsibility for bringing this com- plex project on stream. In ad- dition to being new technology, these facilities were also started up under full computer control - as far as we know, this is a first for the petroleum industry. From observing this startup, our advisors and shareholders feel our Lago employees are second to none in the world in their ability to operate and main- tain complex modern petroleum processing equipment. We are particularly proud of this ac- complishment." The inaugural address was subsequently delivered by Lt. Governor Henriquez, who stres- sed the importance of the new plant for the economy of Aruba: Said Mr. Henriquez: "The in- vestment involved demonstrates very clearly Lago's confidence in its people and the future of Aruba. Considering the large im- pact that Lago's well-being has on the economy of this island, we can safely say that Lago's progress is Aruba's progress and also the progress of the Netherlands Antilles." He further stated: "We should be very pleased today, because thanks to joined efforts of gov- ernment, private enterprise and labor, this important project was Governor Lelto performs first inauguration act at HDS site, assisted by Vallita Maduro, Miss Aruba 1971. Mr. Henriquez continued say- ing: "The HDS Project is also an outstanding example of what E |11 I l!yE President Trusty welcomes Governor Lelto at the Administration Building where the Inauguration program started. Standard Oil of New Jersey is doing about air pollution through its affiliate Lago in Aruba... The Government and the people of Aruba sincerely appreciate the progressive attitude of Lago and its stockholders and offer their fullest cooperation also for the future." After a bus tour of the HDS complex and refinery, the guests were taken to the HDS plant site to witness the inauguration ceremony. Before unveiling the plaque, Governor Leito congratulated Lago and the people of Aruba with this significant project. Said the Governor: "The new facilities constitute a substantial contribution to the industrial ex- pansion of this country and, therefore, also to its general dev- elopment... The opening was performed in a very original manner. The center itself is also original in two ways. It is built in fort style and floats on a barge, 100 ft. long, 40 ft. wide. At 10:30 a.m. the Commander of the Dutch Marine Barracks, Lt. Col. T. A. M. van der Vaart, welcomed the guests and rel- ated the history of the Sport Center. The first officer, Major of the Marines W. Doorman, and Quartermaster J. The civil personnel who worked on this project included P. A. Dirksz and F. S. Tromp. Following his speech, the Commander asked those present to turn to the fort to witness the official opening. A battle scene that had taken place many times in the 17th century in the Ca- ribbean was re-enacted. A schooner with a pirate flag atop was approaching, which alerted the gun crew of three ancient guns installed at the fort. When the ship came within firing range, each gun was fired, with each "shot" falling closer to the ship. The pirates soon hoisted the white flag atop and sailed to the fort to surrender, thus opening the new water sport center for the Dutch marines. In addition to club facilities and a spring-board, there is al- so an airconditioned room be- low deck with bunk beds for four. As a'souvenir, a commemor- ation plaque and a ship bell from the 2nd World War were presented to Commander van der Vaart. Other recognition plaques went to Quartermaster van Spaandonck, and Mike Ha- gedoorn and Ernest Kervel for their assistance. The official part ended when the bugler sounded "Abandon Ship". A special cold treat was awaiting Quartermaster van Spaandonck who was swung in the air by Commander and of- ficers for a first official "splash down" into the sea at the center.
