Join Lago With
Returning to Lago this month
as chemical engineers were
Reimundo Barros and Ruberd
Barry, both scholarship winners
under the Lago Special Educa-
tional Program for Outstanding
Students (LSEPOS).
Reimundo and Ruberd earned
their B.S. degree in chemical
engineering last month from the
Rose Polytechnic Institute of
Terre Haute, Indiana. Now, at
the start of their Lago careers,
Reimundo has been assigned
to the Alkylation Section, and
Ruberd to the Crude Distilla-
tion Section of Technical-Proc-
ess Engineering.
A Mulo-B graduate of La Salle
College in Oranjestad, Rei-
mundo was the second, and, at
sixteen, the youngest student to
be awarded the special all-ex-
pense paid scholarship in 1966.
The first LSEPOS student was
Roy Bergen, who has since re-
turned as a chemical engineer
and is currently working in
Process Engineering's Catalytic
Cracking Section-Oil Move-
ments Area. Reimundo enrolled
in the Rose Polytechnic Insti-
tute in 1967, after studying one
year at the Marianapolls Prep-
aratory School in Thomson, Con-
necticut, where he ranked se-
cond in a class of thirty-seven.
At college he took computer
application courses, was a mem-
ber of the Triangle Fraternity
(a social organization), and In

his spare time played on a soc-
cer team formed by several stu-
dents of Aruba. With a friend,
he traveled by car to Washing-
ton, New York and Florida.
During the summer he re-
turned to Aruba as a student
engineer under the company's
Summer Training Program.
Reimundo has pleasant me-
mories of his college years. He
left Aruba as a boy and has re-
turned now as a young profes-
sional prepared to put into
practice all he has learned over
the past four years.
Ruberd completed the MULO-
B curriculum at the John Wesley
College in San Nicolas in 1965,
then studied at the Colegio Aru-

New HDS Machinery Helps Reduce

Pollution Problems of Customers


A new hydrogen compressor
and steam turbine were install-
ed at the Cat Naphtha Hydro-
finer, Unit 22 of the HDS Com-
plex this month.
The compressor, which was
manufactured by Nuovo Pignoni
Company at Florence, Italy, was
assembled here under direction
of Mr. Danilo Danieli, the com-
pany's erection engineer. The
steam turbine that drives the
compressor was manufactured
by AEG-Kanis Company at
Nurenburg, Germany and was
installed under the supervision
of Mr. Alfred Schaeferling.
The new machinery operates
at 13000 rpm (revolutions per
minute) which is considerably
above the normal speed of most
machinery that Lago operates.
The very high rotating speed
requires extremely smooth sur-
face finishes on the bearings
and shaft seals. The clearance
between the bearing surface and
the shaft must be carefully
machined since the clearance is
less than the thickness of a
strand of human hair. Extreme
care and cleanliness, while as-
sembling these parts, is an Im-
portant part of the training pro-
gram for Lago's machinists. A

scratch, or speck of dirt can
ruin these parts and prevent
satisfactory operation of the
machine.
The hydrogen compressors
are run under the control of
Lago's process operators who
also are trained in new tech-
niques required to properly
start up and control the com-
pressors. The new machines
are used to raise the pressure
of hydrogen gas which replaces
the sulfur compounds found in
crude oil.
This "hydrofining process" is
Lago's contribution in making a
product that will greatly dimin-
ish atmospheric pollution when
used by Lago's customers.

An industrial photographer's
job will sooner or later take
him to almost any area in the
company and beyond as well.
His varied assignments require
his presence in cramped quar-
ters and open construction
areas, high altitudes and at low
levels, in hot operating areas
and in cool air-conditioned buil-
dings. At such time he is ex-
posed to heat, moisture and
grime. Nevertheless, each of
these jobs offers certain chal-
lenges, and the photographer
can look back on his assign-
ments with satisfaction and a
sense of pride when he devel-
ops the films and knows that
they have accomplished their
purpose.
Such is the case with Lago's
photographer Jose M. de Cuba
of PR/IR Department. Joe's
photo assignments have required
him to climb almost to the top
of the Cat Cracker and on flare
stacks, go out on tugboats for
panoramic refinery views, crawl
into furnaces and reactors in
coveralls, go down into tanks,
take shots of industrial acci-
dents, defective equipment and
training sessions. On special
occasions, Joe has been charg-
ed with taking aerial shots. His
off-the job assignments have in-
cluded company dinners, sports
and carnival activities, pictures
for Lago calendars, and the
specially pleasing job of photo-
graphing the island beauty
queen contests.
Recently, Joe received an
unusual work request from

eering Section. Joe's task was
to be on standby while a new
turbine and compressor were
being, checked for final assembly
at the Cat Naphtha Hydrofiner
at the HDS site. The final as-
sembly of the hydrogen recycle
compressors was at the same

Joe's job was to shoot pict-
ures of each bearing and shaft
seal part as it was being as-
sembled until a complete photo-
graphic sequence of the instal-
lation was obtained.
Eventually, the photos will
be used as an aid to properly
dismantle and replace worn
parts in an emergency, thus
preventing prolonged and costly
shutdowns while waiting for the
manufacturer's representative to
arrive from Europe. In addition,
they can be used to train other
machinist personnel in the fu-
ture.

HDS Sulfur Plant I (S1AR) was started up June 18, producing
high purity (99Io) sulfur within one hour. The second plant
(S2AR) was put In service July 13, producing on-specification
sulfur at the rate of 112 LT/D, within the hour. Both units were
started up under direction of process foreman Ivan Mendes,

of his excellent scholastic
achievement, he was awarded
the company's special scholar-
ship to further his education
abroad.
Following an Intensive six-
week English program at the
North Carolina State University
in Raleigh, N.C., Ruberd enter-
ed Rose Polytechnic Institute in
Indiana. While on campus, Ru-
berd joined the Amateur Radio
Club, ran in track races and
was a member of A.P.O. (Alpha
Phi Omega) fraternity, a service


organization. During the holi-
days, he traveled to New York,
Anguilla, St Maarten, and vis-
ited his father, Lago annuitant
Jacques E. Barry, who lives in
St Thomas.
Ruberd, who is now 22, tho-
roughly enjoyed college life.
Although the studies were quite
difficult, he concentrated on be-
ing a good student and earning
good grades.
The Lago Special Educational
Program for Outstanding Stud-
ents (LSEPOS) was founded in
May 1966 to give ambitious An-
tillean students the opportunity
to study a career, which will


help meet the company's re-
quirements for professional and
technical personnel.
To qualify the student must
be a math or science graduate
of MULO-B, HBS, UTS or equi-
valent with outstanding scholas-
tic performance, favorable re-
commendation from his school,
and a high score on the tests
given at Lago. After graduation,
he should return to work for
Lago at least five years.
Other LSEPOS students in the
U.S.A. are Russel Dowling (che-
mical engineering) and Glenn
Geerman (electrical engineer-
ing).


DEATHS
HERMANUS HUISING, for-
eign staff annuitant, died
In Canada on May 20,
1971, at age 66. He had
worked in Process-LO.F.
and retired from Lago with
24 years of service in 1957.
PEARLINA E. NICHOLS, local
annuitant, died in Trinidad
on June 21. She had work-
ed in the Medical Depart-
ment, and retired after 18
years of service In 1966.

New "Casibari"

Group Commissio
A new group of boyscouts
was formed in March at Piedra
Plat. Chiled the "Casibari"
group, its 40 members (9 20
years old) fall under the aus-
pices of the Antillean Boyscouts
Association.
The initiative for setting up
the new group came from Jan
Lobbrecht, Assistant District
Commissioner-General Service,
of the association. A contribut-
ing factor in his efforts, says
Jan, is the interest shown by
parents in this movement.
To coordinate the activities of
the group a special commission
was set up. Of its seven mem-
bers two are Lago employees:
Rey Werleman of Mechanical-
Building Section and G. R. Ni-
colaas of Mechanical-Instrument
Maintenance Section. The other
members are Otillo B. Lade,
Carlos Hart, Everard H. Henri-
quez and Evert 0. Perelra.
Scoutmaster is Jose R. W. Win-
klaar.
Official installation of the com-
mission members took place on
the 17th of this month during a
camp fire at Seru Lopez where
the group set up camp for three
days. Also present were the pa-
rents of the boyscouts.
All indoor activities and meet-
ings of the group are held in
the Kibra Hacha School at Pie-
dra Plat. "The primary objec-
tive of our movement", says Jan
Lobbrecht, "is to teach the
youngsters to become better ci-
tizens along the same lines as
the YMCA".

Besides organizing camping
and scouting activities, the com-
mission also plans to start with
an educational film program.
Lago's Public Relations Division
has offered special films made
available by the U.S. Information
Service.

On July 31, Michael Proterra, gre
a member of the Society of Je- sity
sus (Jesuits), will be ordained leg
to the priesthood by the Most
Reverend Johannes M. Holter-
man, O.P., Bishop of Willem-
stad, Curacao, at St. Rose of
Lima Church, Newton, Connec-
ticut.
Michael is the eldest son of
Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Pro-
terra, formerly of Seroe Colo-
rado, and was born at the Lago
Hospital on September 12, 1942.
His father, "Joe" Proterra, re-
tired as a Mechanical Depart-
ment Manager in 1965, after
working 27 years with Lago.
