Effective May 1, 1971, Fran-
cisco Kock advanced to senior
engineer in the Technical-HDS
Division.
Francisco began at Lago as
a Lago Vocational School stu-
dent on May 1, 1943. After gra-
duation, he was assigned to
Process-Light Oils Finishing
where he progressed to proc-
ess clerk in 1954. In June
that year, he transferred to the
Executive Department where he
worked as coordination assis-
tant, coordination analyst and
coordinator.
In 1964, Francisco left Lago
with a LEAP scholarship to
study chemical engineering at
the West Virginia Institute of
Technology. He returned to La-
go In 1968 with a bachelor's
degree in chemical engineering
and was assigned to Technical-
Process Engineering Division as
contact engineer for the Oil
Movements area.
When he received the schol-
arship, Francisco had 21 years
of company service, with the
latter ten years in the Process-
Operations Coordination Divi-
sion.
Last year, Francisco was as-
signed to the HDS Section
where he has been involved
with preparations for startup,
initially for the new HDS Vac-
uum Pipestill and lately for the
new sulfur plants. His advance-


Francisco has followed var-
ious training courses during his
term at Lago. These include:
Effective Letter Writing, Fortran,
On-site Computer Simulator
training, Kepner-Tregoe and Pro-
cess Economics courses. He
has also participated in several
job-related assignments at Cre-
ole-Caracas, Creole-New York,
Esso Research-N.J., and most
recently represented Lago at a
sulfur operations meeting at the
Benicia Refinery in California.
In his leisure hours, he en-
joys fishing and reading. Mar-
ried, he and his wife Sylvia have
two daughters and a son.

Vacuum Pipestill Is First Unit

To Go on Stream on Reclaimed Site


Completed early last month,
the HDS Vacuum Pipestill
(V2AR) started producing on-
specification sidestream pro-
ducts on April 26. This is the
largest unit on the HDS site.
Pre-startup work began in the
middle of last month under di-
rection of Julio Curiel, an HDS
shift foreman. Prior to that, Ju-
lio has been on a special as-
signment to prepare all details
for the startup. He also wrote
the operating manual for the
units. Three shift teams of ap-
proximately eight men each, in-
cluding temporary overseas as-
signment (TOA) and Esso Res-
earch personnel, were instru-
mental in the successful start-
up operations. Many of these
process men earlier this year
followed a 5-day HDS training
program on ERE's computer
simulator at Florham Park.

With a design feed rate of
115,000 barrels per day, the
Vacuum Pipestill is believed to
be the largest operating plant
of its type in the world.
Now that the HDS Vacuum
Pipestill is in operation, four of
the six new tanks of the 760-
765 series in the upper tank-
farm area have been reinstated
to their original service to pro-
vide storage capacity of
2,400,000 barrels for desulfuriz-
ed feed stock.

his entire Lago career in the
Process Department In 1941
he started as an apprentice
in L.O.F. where he worked
his way up to treater in
1945. In 1949 he was prom-
oted to assistant operator. An
operator since 1965, he is
currently assigned to Proc-
ess-HDS Division. His anni-
versary date was April 1.
Pedro Flemming joined
the Lago Vocational School
In 1941 starting as a process
apprentice D in the Pressure
Stills. Here he advanced to
houseman in 1946. That
same year, he joined the
local army and returned to
Lago in 1947. He transferred
to Cracking Department as
levelman in 1949 and became
assistant operator in 1951.
Mr. Flemming, an operator
since 1965, completed 30
years of service on April 1.

Higlnlo Jansen began as
a Lago Vocational School
student in 1941 assigned to
Process-L.O.F. In 1946 he
Joined the army and return-
ed to Lago in 1947. In 1951
he became houseman, and
in 1959 levelman. Mr. Jansen
advanced to assistant oper-
ator in 1965. At present he
is assigned to Process-HDS
as an operator. His service
anniversary was April 1.

School graduate, Camille J.
Maduro's first assignment
was in the Pressure Stills.
He later worked as process
helper and as a fireman be-
fore his one-year military
service In 1946. Rejoining
Lago, he was assigned to
Cracking Department where

Apollnar C. Martes is also

Bernardo Van Der Linde
joined Lago in 1941 as a
process apprentice in Pres-
sure Stills. In 1943, when he
was a fireman, he was called
to military service, but re-
turned in 1946. Mr. Van Der
Linde became an assistant
operator in 1949. He is cur-
rently assigned to Process-
Fuels. On April 1, he observ-
ed 30 years of service.

GIIberto Werleman also
started as a process appren-
tice in the Gas Plant in 1941.
He progressed to process
helper A in 1949 and to
levelman in Catalytic & Lt.
Ends two years later. He was
promoted to assistant oper-
ator in 1954. An operator
since 1965, he is now in the
Process-Light Hydrocarbons
Division. His service anniver-
sary date was April 1.

Rudolfo Rasmljn was ori-
ginally employed in 1937 as
a laborer, but resigned In
1939. He was reemployed in
1942, but Joined the army
the same year. Returning in
1945, he worked briefly in
the Marine-Wharves, but was
transferred to the Garage
where he advanced to Driver
I in 1955 and an equipment
operator 2 in Mechanical-
Transportation in 1965. An
equipment operator I in
Mechanical-Equipment Oper-
ators since 1967, he cele-
brated his 30th service an-
niversary on April 2.

Matheo Werleman joined
Lago in 1941 as a mechani-

Department. In 1944 he join-
ed the army where he served
until 1946, when he was re-
employed as a process hel-
per D in the L.O.F. Here he
advanced to assistant oper-
ator in 1963.
At present he is assigned

Your Hands Always Need the Best of Protection;

Lago Provides This to Safeguard All Its Employees


In many jobs handled by our
employees, the use of some
kind of hand protection is man-
datory. For tradesmen, opera-
tors and engineers, Lago has
several types of gloves for use
as required by the type of work
they perform. Each type of
glove is designed for a specific
use.
As is the case, the hands are
the ones that tackle all kinds
of jobs and should, therefore,
be well cared for, on and off
the Job. Lago's Central Tool
Room provides the following
types of work gloves for indus-
trial purposes:
General Work Gloves
Leather palmed, cloth backed
gloves and full leather gloves
are provided for work involving
handling of rough material
which may cause minor cuts,
scratches, or abrasions.
Heat Protective Gloves
There are two types. Welder's
leather gloves are available for
protection against burns in bur-
ning, cutting and welding oper-
ations or when handling hot
materials or molten metal. For
welders, also sleeves, jackets
and leg guards are provided.
Asbestos gloves are provided
for handling hot objects and for
pouring hot tar or asphalt.
Gloves for Chemicals and
Irritants
Special gloves should be used


to protect the hands against the
injurious effects of chemicals,
acids and many aromatic oils
on the skin. The gloves the
company supplies for this pur-
pose are made of rubber or
plastic.
Electrical System Gloves
Electricians have gloves to
protect their hands from direct
contact with live wires. To give
full protection on lines with
voltages up to 2300 volts,
double gloves are used: elec-
trical rubber gloves inside lea-
ther gloves.
When working on non-energ-
ized electric wires, electrical
leather gloves are used.


Sandblasting Gloves
For special work, such as
sandblasting and gridblasting,
a special type of glove is sup-
plied. Made of rubber, these
sandblasting gloves are always
available in the blast cleaning
equipment of the Machine Shop.
As with any other protective
equipment, gloves should be
Inspected each time before use
whether they are in good con-
dition or not. Safety rules and
other information on work glo-
ves are contained in Lago's
Manual of Safe Practices.
Every year, Lago issues ap-
proximately 2400 pairs of gloves
to help safeguard the hands of
its employees.

Mrs. Sylvia Alyene Wins Prize


In Esso Slogan
The winner of the third Esso
Traffic Safety Slogan Contest
held last month was Mrs. Syl-
via H. Alyene, who resides at
Dadelstraat 9, Dakota.
Her winning slogan in Dutch
says: "Wie Voorzichtig Rijdt,
Die Leed Vermijdt" (He who
drives carefully will avoid suf-
fering). The slogan was select-
ed from among 800 entries.
The prize Mrs. Alyene chose
from various prizes made avail-
able by Esso Nederlandse An-
tillen N.V. was an Osterizer.
Mrs. Alyene received her
prize from Betty Ecury, chairman


Contest for April
of the Traffic Safety Committee,
during a program on TeleAruba
on April 30.
Everyone can participate in
the Esso slogan contest which
closes on the fifteenth of each
month. Entry forms are avail-
able at all Esso Servicenters
and completed forms should be
turned in to the Esso stations.
The two previous winning
slogans were: "Sea Bispau,
Core cu Cuidau" (Be alert, drive
carefully) and "Veilig in het
verkeer Altijd dame, altijd
heer" (In safe traffic ways A
lady, a gentleman, always).
