M&C Personnel Achieve Two Million Manhours without Disabling Accident


On April 13, 1971, the M&C
employees reached another
milestone in safety: over
2,000,000 manhours of accident-
free job performance. Previous-
ly, on March 11, 1971, the M&C
personnel completed two years
of operation without a disabling
injury. Together, these represent
the best records attained by any
division in Lago's history.
In recognition of this special
achievement, all personnel of
Mechanical's Maintenance &
Construction Division received
a decal as a personal safety
award. The presentations were
made during safety talks at va-

Aruba Red Cross Acquires Ambulance t

To Improve Service to Community


Friday, April 23. was an im-
portant day for the Aruba Red
Cross organization, which oper-
ates directly under the Dutch
Red Cross That day the Aruba
Red Cross got its first emer-
gency ambulance to give bet-
ter service to the Aruban com-
munity. In a brief ceremony at
the Red Cross headquarters at
Dakota, the board transferred
the ambulance to the Red Cross
Brigade.
The brigade is under com-
mand of Major Dr A D. Zijder-
veld, while Jean H. E. Baiz, a
senior engineering assistant in
Lag o's Mechanical-M&C-Gen-
eral, is ensign charged with the
brigade's activities. Jean has
been an active member of the
brigade since 1956 He is also
a licensed life-saving and swim-
ming instructor.
From its headquarters, the
Aruba Red Cross directs several
activities during the year. Every
weekend, its members act as
life guards for bathers from
their five 20-foot high lookout


towers located along Palm
Beach This community service
is sponsored by the island gov-
ernment. Every year, they also
assist in Aruba's carnival par-
ades Last month they took part
in the parade on Queen's birth-
day (April 30) along with the
Dutch Marines. The brigade
members, who practically all
have had first-aid training, are
also prepared to assist in any
disaster on the island. When-
ever drives are held to help
victims overseas, the brigade
coordinates such activities and
takes care of packing and dis-
patching donated items.
Originally instituted during
the Second World War, the bri-
gade at present has 40 men and
30 ladies as active members.

Cross Chapter consists of: Er-
win G. Oehlers, chairman; Jan
Neeleman, treasurer; H. E. Pe-
reira, secretary; and F. M. Booi,
Dr. W. M. Visser, A. H. Raven,

YMCA Celebrates Fifteenth Anniversary with 6-day Program for Its Members


On April 27, 1971 the Young
Men's Christian Association cer-
ebrated its 15th year of dedica-
tion to youth work in Aruba.
The 6-day program observing
the occasion included a thanks-
giving service and social and
sports events for the over 350
junior and 150 senior members
During ceremonies that day,
special recognition was given
in the Youth Activity Building
in San Nicolas to the founder
of YMCA in Aruba, Mr Bob
Steele, and to Lago. YMCA
President F Loonstra presented
a certificate of recognition to
Lago President, Mr. R. L. Trusty.
On this occasion, Mr. Trusty
presented a check to the YMCA
for making improvements to the
Youth Activity Building.
Other highlights of the cele-
brations included inauguration

of a skating rink and an all-
purpose room at the Dakota
center, and a snackbar in the
Youth Activity Building.
Some of the important YMCA
activities during its 15 years'
existence include: the organiza-
tion of the Junior Leaders' Club
in 1958, the Y's Men's Club in
1959, the Christian Women's
Welfare Association in 1961, the
YMCA Brass Band in 1964, the
Y's Menettes Club and the
Fencing Club in 1968.
In 1966, the Aruba Rotary
Club helped the YMCA build
the youth facilities in Dakota. In
1970, the junior leaders organ-
ized an educational trip to Co-
lombia.
The YMCA activities have
been under direction of Secre-
tary General Jorge Guastavino
since 1967

Fire Training Ground Now Offers

Improved, Up- to- Date Facilities


Lago's Fire Training Ground
located at the west end of the
refinery has been converted in-
to a complex resembling a
miniature refinery
On an area more than double
its previous size, several new
structures and equipment are
now neatly arranged to repre-
sent actual situations in a ref-
inery Some of the new equip-
ment and structures include:
three tanks, one for gasoline,
one for kerosene and one for
gasoil; two pumps, a tower, a
small tank, condensers, pipe
banks, overhead flanges, load-
ing platform, chlorine cylinder,
a large fire pit and several pans
Several practice evolutions will
enable the trainees to see the
benefit from and use proper ap-
plication of drychemical and
water fog.
The training ground now has
six hydrants instead of the pre-
vious single hydrant. There is
also a new smoke house for
practice with air-breathing ap-
paratus,
The various structures are
also spaced out so that training


with firetrucks can be conven-
iently held or combined with
other fire practices.
The improved facilities were
designed and developed by C.
C. Lieffers and Peter Storey of
Industrial Services. The latter
attended Texas A&M Fire School
and the Damage Control Train-
ing School in Philadelphia con-
ducted by the U.S. Navy. Sev-
eral of the projects found at
these training centers have been
incorporated at Lago's new fa-
cility.
Charged with contracting and
supervising the project, which
cost approximately $52,000, was
Carlos Bislip of Mechanical-En-
gineering.
With the modern facilities
now completed, Jim Boyd of
Humble's Baytown Refinery, has
been engaged to conduct an 8-
week fire training program for
Lago's Volunteer Firefighters,
Process and selected employees
from other departments. Obser-
ving the improved firefighting
facilities, Jim Boyd said: "These
facilities rank among the best
in the Esso organization"
