To New Posts Effective April 1


Two promotions were an-
nounced effective April 1, 1971.
In the Technical-HDS Division,
James H V. Harlow became a
senior engineer, and Hilton B.
Hassell advanced to senior en-
gineer in the Mechanical-Engin-
eering Division.
Jim has a B.S. degree in
chemical engineering from Pur-
due University, Indiana, since
1962. He transferred to Lago
from Humble's Baytown refin-
ery in March 1969. His first as-
signment at Lago was in Tech-
nical-Process Engineering Div-
ision, CP&LE Section, as contact
engineer for the AAR and ISAR
plants.
In 1970 Jim was assigned to


the HDS Section where he has
been involved in the pre-start-
up activities for the Hydrogen
Plants. Most recently he has
provided technical assistance
during the successful startup of
the company's first Hydrogen
unit
In Baytown, Jim took courses
in Refinery Economics and Pro-
cess Design
A former U.S. Naval aviator,
he served in the Western Pac-
ific from 1964 to 1967. Jim is
currently Flight Director of the
Aruba Flying Club. In his leis-
ure hours, he enjoys playing
bridge and also golf.
Married, he and his wife

At Management Dinner at Golf C


During the first management
dinner held this year at the
Aruba Golf Club on April 2,
four 30-year service employees
and twelve 25-year service
watch recipients were honored.
The 30-year service emblem
recipients were Eustacio Brit-
ten, Gasper C. Hodge and Jo-
han Krozendijk, all of Mechani-
cal, and Felix S. Hoek, of Pro-
cess.
The watch recipients included
five Process men: Humberto

Figures of Nine
As far as rainfall is concerned,
Aruba had a good year in 1970.
Rainfall totaled 28.62 inches, the
highest figure in the past nine
years.
Remarkable in last year's
rainfall was that most of the
rain had fallen in December, up
to a total of 16.29 inches. This
total is the highest not only for
any month of December, but al-

30th Service Anniversaries


March 1971


Felix Hoek began as a
mechanical apprentice in the
company's Warehouse in
1941 He advanced to trades
apprentice "B" in 1944, after
which he entered the local
military service.
Upon his return in 1946,
Mr. Hoek was assigned to
the Light Oils Finishing De-
partment as process helper
"D". In 1952 he became pro-
cess helper "A". The follow-
ing year he was promoted to
treater.
An assistant operator since
1965, Mr Hoek celebrated
his 30th service anniversary
on March 28.
Leo V. Geerman has spent
all his career in the Electri-
cal Department. He joined
the Lago Vocational School
in 1941 Assigned to the Elec-
trical Department, he ad-
vanced to electrician helper
"A" in 1947.
Mr. Geerman became elec-
trician "C" in 1951, and was
promoted to electrician "A"
four years later
At present he is an equip-
ment tradesman "A" in Elec-
trical. He completed 30 years
with Lago on March 28
Johan Krozendijk originally
joined the company as a
mechanical apprentice "D"
in the Warehouse. Shortly af-
ter becoming trades appren-


tice "B" in 1944,

Mr. Krozendijk was prom-
oted to materials clerk 2 in
1966 At present he is mate-
rial clerk 1 in Mechanical-
Materials Division. His anni-
versary is on March 28.
Pieter B. A. Sloterdijk's
first job at Lago was as cle-
rical apprentice "B" in the
Marine Office. After comple-
ting clerical training, he
served in the army from
1943 to 1947 where he held
the rank of sergeant. Upon
returning to the company, he
worked as junior utilities
clerk in the Accounting De-
partment. Here he worked
his way up from accounting
teller to section head-Print-
ing Plant. In 1957 he became
supervisor-Printing & Dupli-
cating Section.
Mr. Sloterdijk transferred
to the Payroll Section in
1964 as supervisor-Payroll &
Thrift. Here he advanced to
accountant.
A systems analyst in Sys-
tems & Data Processing since
1968, Mr. Sloterdijk comple-
ted his 30th service anniver-
sary on March 31.

Second Year of Progress of Hydrodesulfurization Project


On April 2, 1971, construction
on Lago's Hydrodesulfurization
Project had been under way
for two years.
Parsons Corporation as the
main Contractor, assisted by 20
subcontractors and over 2000
construction personnel during
peak employment, had complet-
ed eight units at the end of the
second year while the other
units were in a final stage of
construction. Over 80% of the
construction work force were
local workers.
The units completed and tur-


ned over in the two-year period
include: Hydrogen Plants 1 & 2;
Vacuum Pipestill, the Sour Wa-
ter Stripper (Deaerator Section),
Salt Water Intake, API Separa-
tor, Liquid Fuel Distribution,
the HDS flare, and one steam
boiler.
By the end of March, feed
had been introduced into the
first Hydrogen Plant and the
plant was operating close to
design feed rate early in April
The HDS complex is expected
to be completed and in oper-
ation in the fall of this year.

age 71 on March 29, 1971 In
Holland. He retired as Staff

He Is survived by his widow,

Netherlands.


Project engineering section.
Hilton's April 1 advancement
is in recognition of his contri-
butions in the project engineer-
ing area. At present his assign-
ments include several large pro-
jects, including the design and
installation of new flare facili-
ties.
Hilton has followed various
courses during his 6-1/2 years
at Lago. These include courses
in Mechanical Design, Effective
Management, Effective Writing
and Effective Letter Writing. In
1970, he made a company bus-
iness trip to Joy Manufacturing
Company, Buffalo, N.Y., where
he attended a compressor test-
ing training during one week.
One of his favorite pastimes
is reading. He also enjoys trav-
eling and has visited several is-
lands in the Caribbean while on
vacation.
