Hydrogen Unit 1 Is in Full Swing

With Aid of Lago, ERE, TOA Team


Lago's new Hydrogen Plant
No. 1 came fully on stream on
March 30. The startup team in-
cluded Lago, Esso Research &
Engineering Co. (ERE) and
Temporary Overseas Assignment
(TOA) personnel.
Sunday, March 28, the pen-
tane feed was put into the
H1AR unit and after 36 hours
the unit produced on-specifica-
tion hydrogen of 97+0/ purity.

The record period from feed-

is believed to be the shortest
achieved for similar Esso units.
This is the first of the major
HDS units to go on stream.
When in full operation, the
two hydrogen units, both locat-
ed north of Powerhouse No. 1,
will take approximately 3500
barrels of feed a day from NFAR

Employees Return to Work March 24

After Nine Days of Work Stoppage


What began as a walkout of
a group of Process employees
of the Light Hydrocarbons Divi-
sion on Monday, March 15, re-
sulted in a 9-day work stoppage.
That same afternoon the In-
dependent Oil Workers' Union
of Aruba called a general mem-
bership meeting, in which those
present decided for a general
strike.
The walkout resulted when
the Alky/NFAR/ISAR field ope-
rator refused to accept field

responsibilities for the FGS unit,
and was suspended.
According to the Union, this
change in work assignment was
not conveyed to them by Lago
management. On the other
hand, Lago management stated
that the change was discussed
with the Union in May 1970 and
again in September 1970 and
in January this year. Since there
was no reply from the Union
on this matter, Lago manage-
ment decided to implement the
change effective March 15.
To remove any doubt, Lago
management reaffirmed on sev-
eral occasions that the con-
templated change in job duties
would not cause any employee
to become surplus.
Through the efforts of man-
agement members and other
working employees, refinery
operations continued smoothly
and safely. HDS construction
and startup activities also con-
tinued normally.
To test the legality of the
strike, the company filed for an
injunction against the strike. The
judge ruled on March 19 that
IOWUA should call up, within a
very reasonable period of time,
all employees-members to re-
sume work.

the right to introduce new work
methods: (b) the Collective
Working Agreement contains a
prohibition to strike; (c) the
Grievance Procedure was not
followed.
Although the Union did call
up its members to go back to
work, it was not until Tuesday,
March 23, 1971, that a general
membership meeting of the
Union decided to end the work
stoppage. A majority of mem-
bers present ratified Lago's pro-
posal to the Union and decided
to resume work with 435 votes
for, 89 against, and 15 absten-
tions and/or invalid votes.
Lago's proposal was:
(1) The employee who was
suspended on March 15,
1971, can return to work
and his suspension will be
ended immediately. This
employee then can start a
grievance immediately to
reclaim pay lost during his
suspension. The other em-
ployees who abandoned
their jobs (strikers) will just
return to work without any
reprisals against any of
them. "No reprisals" does

The winning slogan for March
in the monthly Traffic Safety
Slogan Contest of Esso Nether-
lands Antilles N.V. was submit-
ted in Dutch. The slogan "Vei-
lig in het Verkeer Altijd Dame,
Altijd Heer" (In Safe Traffic
Ways A Lady, a Gentleman,
Always!) came from Mrs. Betsy
Meijer, a secretary of Parsons
Corporation.
Previously she had worked
for fifteen years for Lago. The
last few years she was assign-
ed in Comptroller's-Office Serv-
ices.
Mrs. Meijer's slogan was turn-
ed in at the San Nicolas Esso


Servicenter of Viana's.
The March winning slogan
was selected from among over
660 entries. February participa-
tion exceeded 1000 entries.
The prize which Mrs. Meijer
selected was a General Elec-
tric waffle baker, which was
presented to her on Friday,
March 26, during a TV program
on Tele-Aruba.
The Esso Traffic Safety con-
test is open to everyone, while
entry forms are available at all
Esso Servicenters. Completed
forms should be turned in to
the Esso stations before the
15th of each month.

The recent Lago Science Fair
Poster Contest had a slightly
larger response than the first
one in 1970 It drew 47 entries
from 45 participants of 6 differ-
ent schools In 1970, the figures
were 45, 43 and 6, respectively.
In a special TV program on
TeleAruba on March 29, the
winning poster was announced
It was painted by Vladimir Boek-
houdt of Colegio Arubano whose
poster, in red, blue and black,
shows a lunar module descend-
ing on the moon's surface with
the Earth in the background
Presentation of the FIs 25

Science Fair Committee mem-
ber, Albert Eman, during the
program
Also invited to the TV pro-
gram were three other partici-
pants whose four posters came
out in the finals. They were
Eligio Schotborg of the School
of Economic, Tourist and Ad-
ministrative Training. Arthur
Meiners of Colegio Arubano,
and Rodney Marugg of the
John F Kennedy School (2

Each of the students present
was given an opportunity to des-
cribe the subject of his poster.

After opening remarks by


LSF committee member Ber-
trando de Cuba, Albert Eman
commented on the purpose of
the poster contest and the suc-
cess achieved this year He ex-
pressed the committee's satis-
faction with the contest and
said that a similar contest is
planned for next year.
Albert also explained the
bases for evaluating the entries:
Creativity, color combination,
clarity, relationship to science,
neatness and artistic value The
judging was done by the com-
mittee.
As a token of recognition for
having participated in the con-
test, all students present on the

As part of Lago's new jet fuel
facilities for handling jumbo
jets at Aruba's Beatrix Airport,
Esso Marketing recently ac-
quired two huge tank trucks.
The tank trucks, or refuelers,
are ten feet high with an over-
all length of 54 feet. Each has
a tank of 10,000-gallon capacity.
The two refuelers, each to
handle one wing, are equipped
with pumps and hoses capable


of supplying 1600 gallons of
fuel per minute.
More flexible in operation
than an underground hydrant
system, the tank trucks will be
used only on the airport.
The new facilities at the air-
port will also include: an 8,000-
gallon trailer tank to haul jet
fuel from Lago; a 42,000-gallon
jet fuel storage tank with pip-

for conversion into hydrogen.
The hydrogen is produced from
pentane or butane feed by
means of catalyst, steam and
high temperature (approximately
14000F). The unit compressor
delivers hydrogen at pressures
of 500 psig and 1000 psig.
The product hydrogen will be
used in the five new hydro-
finers located on the HDS site
to remove sulfur.
Both hydrogen units are con-
trolled by the new HDS com-
puter system of the Refining
Control Center. In fact this Hy-
drogen unit 1 is the first com-
plete unit to be started up ini-
tially from the Refining Control
Center.
Each of the two hydrogen
units is equipped with four
steam-driven and four motor-
driven pumps and one 2000

sor as spare.

The Lago operating personnel
for both units have previously
received a 7-week classroom
process training and field train-
ing on the operation of the hy-
drogen units. Part of the hy-
drogen plant personnel also
completed a 4-day hydrogen
plant training on a computer
simulator of Esso Research &
Engineering Co. at Florham Park.
New Jersey.

The startup operations of the
H1AR unit were under the dir-
ection of Process Foreman
John Every, former operations
supervisor of the Aruba Chem-
ical Industries.

coming science fair. He also
suggested to them to present
and describe their projects on
TV using Lago's videotape ap-
paratus.
This year's Lago Science Fair
is scheduled for May 31 and
June 1 in San Nicolas, and on
June 4 and 5, in Oranjestad The
places of exhibition will be an-
nounced later.


Beginning this month, Lago
will present a number of select-
ed films on Tele-Aruba. The
program, entitled "Lago Video
Theatre", will feature six full-
length movies during the year,
starting with "The Miracle of
Our Lady of Fatima" (102 min-
utes) tonight at 9:30.
Most films will be presented
during certain holiday obser-
vances. Whenever possible, a
movie will be shown which re-
lates to the meaning of the
holiday being observed. As to-
morrow is Good Friday, the
movie to be seen tonight has
been selected for its religious
meaning. Starring in it are: Gil-
bert Roland, Angela Clark and
Frank Silvera.
Lago's next "Lago Video The-
atre" is on U.S. Independence
Day, July 4, featuring an Ame-
rican Classic "The Pathfinder"
(78 min.). For the younger group
"Hansel and Gretel" (54 min.)
will be presented during the
summer vacation on August 3
On the eve of Halloween, Octo-
ber 29, "The Comedy of Terrors"
(84 min.) will be shown. The
"Mouse on the Mayflower" (60
min.) will tell the true story of
the Pilgrims and how "Thanks-
giving" got started. This movie
will be presented on November
25.
"Cricket on the Hearth" (60
min.), a happy Holiday film for
the entire family, is a Christmas
classic by Charles Dickens and

Mr. Trusty further mentioned
that it was noteworthy that those
employees who were off the
job during the work stoppage
have demonstrated a high de-
gree of self-discipline and con-
trol. This was especially discer-


nible in the peaceful demon-
strations and behavior on the
part of these employees on the
public roads. "These facts prove
that our employees are peace-
loving citizens," Mr. Trusty con-
cluded.
