1970 Outstanding Ideas of 12 Men Earn FIs. 11,110 in Capital Awards


In a speech delivered in both
Papiamento and English at the
Coral Strand Hotel on Friday,
March 12, Assistant General
Manager E C Foley praised
twelve employees for their out-
standing CYI suggestions
The occasion marked the pre-
sentation of the 1970 CYI Capi-
tal awards totalling FIs 11,110
to these men at a special din-
ner in their honor. Nine men
were from Mechanical, two from
Process and one from Technical
Department Also present were
the CYI chairman, B. S Whitney,
who welcomed the guests and
introduced Mr Foley, depart-
ment managers concerned, CYI
winners of FIs 100 or more,
their immediate supervisors and
CYI Committee members.
In his remarks, Mr Foley hail-


ed the capital award winners
as Lago's CYI champions for
1970 and thanked them for their
excellent ideas. He further em-
phasized that good ideas, put
to work, are the bases for im-
provement and progress.
The highest capital award ever
paid in Lago's CYI history went
to Alfonso Steenen, a laboratory
technician in the Technical De-
partment. He received FIs. 6,000
as extra recognition for his idea
to improve blending procedures
for certain naphthas. This idea
resulted in higher profits and
earned him the top CYI initial
award of FIs 6,000 last year,
which is also the highest initial
award paid for a single idea.
The capital award is an extra
recognition to suggesters who

Trevor J. Rhydderch was
named Division Superintendent
of Process-Terminal Operations
effective March 1. With this pro-
motion, Trev replaces James R.
Buchanan, who has been trans-
ferred to Creole, Caracas, as
senior coordinator in the Oper-
ations Coordination Department.

In his new capacity, Trev will
be in charge of the organization
responsible for operation of all
Lago's marine and harbor facil-
ities. This includes the Sea
Berth, the agency functions, the
Oil Movements Control Center,
and for blending and loading
fuel oil products.

A chemical engineer with a
B.A. Sc. from the British Colum-
bia University of his native Ca-
nada, Trev worked nine years
with Imperial Oil Company, Ltd.,
before transferring to Lago in
March 1962. Here his first as-
signment was as an engineer in
Technical-Process Engineering

Division. Later on he transferred
to Process-Cracking & Lt. Ends
as a technical assistant. In July
1963, he transferred to Process-
Light Oils Finishing.

Trev was promoted to process
foreman Oil Movements in
1965, working subsequently in
the various sections of the divi-
sion. He also worked in the po-
sition of operations coordinator
in Operations Coordination Divi-
sion and on an assignment in the
Technical Department Econ-
omics & Planning Division. Be-
fore his recent promotion, he
was process foreman Black

Esso Netherlands Antilles,
Ltd., Lago's marketing affiliate,
has recently issued a new, up-
to-date road map which in-
cludes all the many changes
which have occurred on the is-
land since the last map was
published in 1963. The map, in
blue and red on white back-


ground, has an attractive aeria
view of the hotels at Palm


Beach on its front cover. In-
formation on the island's history
on the back cover has been re-
vised to include recent indus-
trial and tourist expansion
New streets and roads are
indicated as well as the new
hotels, sites of projected recrea-
tional facilities and tourist at-
tractions In addition, the most
recently inaugurated Esso Serv-
ice Stations are shown, while
city limits of Oranjestad and
San Nicolas reflect boundaries
established by the Island Gov-
ernment. The reclaimed land for
Lago's HDS facilities and the
sea berth are also on the new
map
Other new features of Aruba's
Road Map are' the island's coat
of arms; the Antillean flag,
which replaces the Dutch flag
on the back cover, the Esso
tiger and the name of Esso
Netherlands Antilles, Ltd.. which
issued the road map.
To further help the visitor,
roads to points of interest have
been shaded alongside the rou-
tes, while index boxes of Oran-
jestad and San Nicolas contain
also names of restaurants and
coffee shops
The new map was updated
with the help of the Govern-
ment's Public Works Depart-
ment, Census Office, Survey De-
partment and Tourist Bureau
The entire updating work was
coordinated by A C Eman of
PR/IR Communications
The Esso road map is the
work of General Drafting Com-
pany. Inc, the producer of all
the guides of Humble and its
affiliates since 1923

Pedro A Kelly began his
Lago employment in the
Storehouse as laborer D in
1937 Three years later he
transferred to the Pressure
Stills as laborer B In 1942
he joined the army, return-
ing to Lago as laborer in the
Dry Dock
In 1947 Mr Kelly became
wharfinger "B" in Receiving
& Shipping-Wharves, where
he advanced to dockman in
1956 He subsequently work-
ed in the corporal-dockman
categories until his promo-
tion to corporal "A" dock-
man in 1962
A dock corporal since
1967, Mr Kelly celebrated
his 30th service anniversary
on February 14.

Eustacio Britten

Eustacio Britten's service
with Lago began in 1938 as
a laborer "D" in Mechanical-
Welding He transferred to
the Machinist Section in
1940, advancing to machinist
helper "A" in 1948. In 1955,
Mr Britten moved to the
Yard Section starting as
yardman. Over the years, he

helper in 1948
Mr. Hodge was promoted
to pipefitter "C" in 1964 and
to "B" class in 1966. At pre-

Lago Products Go To The End of The World

With Navy Tanker "Maumee" As Yearly Visitor


A tanker that is seen about
once every year at Lago is the
U.S. Navy Tanker "Maumee".
Recently, she was again at La-
go to take a special cargo for
the U.S. Navy base in the An-
tarctica, called McMurdo Sta-
tion.
After taking several grades of
petroleum products that meet
specifications for use in the
South Pole, such as fuel oil,
motor gasoline, arctic diesel and
light gasoil, she had a total
cargo of over 143,000 barrels.
The 'Maumee" was expected
to arrive at McMurdo Sound about
February 8. The tanker made
the trip now because it is sum-
mer in the Antarctic (from De-
cember 22 to June 22), and
there is continuous daylight for
six months. It is a weird sensa-
tion for a visitor to go outside
at midnight and find a bright
sun and a blue sky. There is
only one sunrise and sunset per
year in the South Pole area
The size of the South Pole
continent is unbelievable. It is
approximately 5-% million
square miles, roughly the equi-
valent of the United States and
Europe combined.
Almost 95% of the world's
permanent ice is in the Antarc-
tic, some 7 million cubic miles
of it. In some places the ice is
almost 3 miles thick. It has been
calculated that if all the ice in


the Antarctic would melt, the
oceans of the world would rise
about 200 feet. Icebergs some-
times break off from the Antarc-
tica, some measuring 210 miles
long and 96 miles wide. Antarc-
tica is the coldest spot on earth
with a temperature of minus
126.9 degrees Fahrenheit and
also the windiest, with frequent
winds of 100 miles an hour.
Despite all its ice, the South
Pole region has almost no fresh
water. There are no rivers, but
only very small streams of wa-
ter from glaciers.
With the permanent cap of ice,
it is only natural that the air-
field is on ice. It is located near

the McMurdo Station.
No trees are found in the An-
tarctica, but only a few plants.
Except for penguins and seals
near the coast, there are no
other animals there. All of the
world's 17 species of penguins
live in the Southern Hemisphere
While twelve nations have
bases in the Antarctic, sixteen
have signed the Antarctic
Treaty that became effective
June 23, 1961 One of the clau-
ses of the Treaty says that "the
Antarctic shall be used for
peaceful purposes only."
Though it's only once a year,

this end of the world.

Clipper "Gloria" Exhibits Products

From Fifty Colombian Companies id


The first floating exposition of
Colombia's export products was
held in Aruba on the clipper
"Gloria" on March 15 and 16.
On a tour of the Caribbean
islands, the training ship Gloria
took the industrial exposition
first to the Dominican Republic
on February 11, and subsequent-
ly to Martinique, Barbados, Tri-
nidad, Curacao and Aruba.
Articles exhibited aboard in-
cluded clothing, construction
materials, food products, furni-
ture, footwear, hand tools, paint,
plywood sheets, prefabricated
houses, rubber products, boats,


and household appliances.
Some fifty companies from
several cities of Colombia, such
as Bogota, Medellin, Cali, Mani-
zales, Bucaramanga, Pereira and
Barranquilla participated in the
industrial exposition.
It is estimated that in 1970
Colombia had 11,500 producing
factories.
The exposition was sponsor-
ed by the Export Promotion
Fund (ProExpo) of Colombia.
The school ship A.R.C. Gloria,
which has a number of cadets
on board, is under command of
Captain Jaime Torres Villareal.
