Lago Tugs Safely
February 8 was a memorable
day in Aruba's tourist history:
the Cunard Line's largest tour-
ist ship. Queen Elizabeth 2,
docked at Oranjestad harbor at
about 7 a.m. The floating luxury
hotel, measuring 963 feet in
length and 105 feet in breadth
with a maximum draft of 32 feet
6 inches, was assisted during
docking operation by the two
festively decorated Lago tugs
"Esso Oranjestad" and "Esso
San Nicolas".
Bringing over 1400 tourists to
Aruba, the 65,863 GRT ocean
liner can accommodate over
2000 passengers. She has a
crew of 940, including 181 offi-
cers and 759 hotel staff.
Fully airconditioned, the OE2
has a theater with seats for 530
people, two outdoor and two in-
door swimming pools for guests
and one for the crew. Its three
main restaurants are: the Co-
lumbia, with 500 seats; the Grill
Room, with 100 seats; and the
Britannia, with 815 seats.
Built with thirteen decks, the
height from keel to masthead
is about 203 feet. Her keel was
laid on July 4, 1965 and the
floating hotel resort was com-
missioned on April 18, 1969.
The main double-reduction
geared turbines of 110,000 horse-
powerful twin-screw merchant
ship afloat, with a service speed
of 28-% knots. She has only
three boilers and is the first pas-

senger vessel to be equipped to
navigate by space satellite. She
is also provided with computer
equipment that is the first of Its
kind on a merchant ship. The
four anchors (3 bow, 1 stern)
weigh 12-1/2 tons each and have
cables up to 2,200 ft. long.
While in Oranjestad, the QE2
took more than 19,000 barrels
of bunker C fuel in her 6,413-
ton capacity tanks from the Es-
so bunkering terminal.
To provide fresh water, the
ship has three Weir flash eva-
porators that produce 1200 tons
of fresh water from the sea per
day. The ship was built at a to-
tal cost of approximately 30
million Pounds Sterling.
The QE2 has the largest and
most modern hospital complex
afloat. It is equipped with six
wards, dispensary, laboratory,
intensive care unit, and dental

First New Visbreaker Furnace Put


In Service at
The first of four new visbrea-
ker furnaces was put in service
at No. 8 Pipestill on January 24,
1971. The new furnace replaces
the old cross and reducer fur-
naces and the external soaking
chambers of that unit.
The replacement of the 1930
design furnaces represents a
significant upgrading step at
Lago. This new style furnace, on
which foundation work began in
May and installation in Septem-
ber of last year, is the first of
its kind to be put in service in
the Lago refinery. New features
of the furnace are the all-weld-
ed suspended wall and center
tubes, and the Esso SO-30 high
intensity liquid fuel burners to
fire the furnace. Similar burners
are being provided for the HDS
project.
The startup of this furnace
provided Lago men with exper-
ience in operating these burners
in advance of the actual HDS
startup. Irwin Tujeehut of Proc-
ess assisted with the training in
the use of these burners.
During the startup, the Proc-
ess people were assisted by a
startup team of Emiliano Tri-
mon of the Process Department,

nan is a former Lago employee
who transferred to Esso Engin-
eering where he helped develop
this new type of burner. He is
currently on a temporary loan
assignment at Lago to assist in
the startup of these new fur-
naces and the HDS furnaces.
Construction of similar repla-
cement furnaces for the Nos. 5,
6 and 7 Pipestills is in progress
and is scheduled for completion
in April this year. The basic
design of the furnace was done
by Esso Engineering. Lago pre-
pared the process design of the
associated piping. Mechanical
design of the new furnaces was
by Foster Wheeler Italiana, erec-
tion by Saipem and installation
of associated facilities, such as
foundations, piping and instru-
mentation, by A. G. McKee. The
electrical facilities were install-
ed by Elga, under supervision
of Henry Coffie of Mechanical-
Engineering.
The project costs approxima-
tely FIs. 7,500,000. Project Man-
ager is Allan Temple and Field
Engineer is Hank Frederiks.

The St. Theresa Parish of San Nicolas celebrated Its 40th annlver-
sary on February 9. One of the celebrations that night as part of a
two-week program, was a torch light procession of the youth or-
ganizations of San Nicolas. The program also included a concert
by the Vivons en Chantant choir, a pontifical mass with sermon by
Msgr. J. M. Holterman and a reception at the Seamen's Home.

Applications for Lago Scholarship

Must Be Turned in Before April 1

The Lago Scholarship Foundation announces that a number of
scholarships will be awarded again this year, mainly to those
qualified to successfully pursue the following courses of study:
Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Accounting, and Business
Administration.
Scholarship assistance for other fields of study may be con-
sidered.
Scholarships are granted on condition that students return to
Aruba upon course completion and work on the Island for at
least three years.
Application forms are now available in the Training Section,
Room 179, General Office Building, and should be submitted
before April 1, 1971.

12 Schools Pledge
To Participate in
Lago's Science Fair

At present, twelve schools
have already pledged to parti-
cipate in Lago's fifth Science
Fair, to be held in June this
year.
In addition to the satisfaction
of creating a science project,
all participating students have
a chance to win valuable prizes
for their efforts. All students
who wish to participate should
see their contact teacher.

the startup, operation and shut-
down of three high capacity
pressurized Tosl boilers Instal-
led at Powerhouse No. 1 to
serve the HDS units. Instructor

Lago Helps Aggrandize Aruba's Carnival Through Funds, Drums and a Float


"We have great admiration
for the excellent work the Aruba
Carnival Foundation is doing in
organizing the carnival celebra-
tions on our island. It certainly
enhances the touristic value of
Aruba and we are pleased to
contribute towards that end."
With these words Lago's PR/IR
Manager, Ben Nixon, presented
a cash donation to the Found-
ation's president, Milo Croes.
On February 11 Messrs. Croes
and Jos van der Schoot, secre-
tary of the Foundation, were the


guests of Messrs. Nixon and
Oscar Antonette during a lun-
cheon at the Coral Strand Ho-
tel, during which the presenta-
tion of Lago's contribution took
place.
Lago has helped promote
Aruba's carnival celebrations for
many years. Each year the
company contributes in three
different ways: hundreds of
empty drums for steel bands,
cash and a float. This year La-
go participated in the parades
with a Lago Art Contest float.

Thrift Plan Board
Thrift Plan participants on
March 1, 2 and 3, 1971.
The candidates who were
nominated by 25 or more Thrift
Plan participants are Nibio
Croes, Carlos Z. de Cuba and
Hyacintho Geerman.
Nibio is a senior accounting
clerk in Comptroller's-Compact
Section who began his employ-
ment with Lago in January, 1942.
Carlos is training adviser in
PR/IR's Training Section. He
started at Lago in November
1951.
Hyacintho works in Comptrol-
ler's-Internal Control Section as
an accounting clerk I. He was
employed in October 1947 and
is vice president of the Inde-
pendent Oil Workers' Union of
Aruba.
At present the Thrift Found-
ation Board of Administration
is composed of: Messrs. R. L.
Trusty, president; P. Tromp,
treasurer; O. V. Antonette, sec-
retary; T. J. Keevan and Lt.
Governor O. S. Henriquez, mem-
bers.
Ballots have been mailed to
each participant to his work lo-
cation. Ballot boxes will be pla-
ced at various locations on
March 1, 2 and 3. The election
will be under supervision of an
Election Committee appointed
by the company.
