Company Makes Annual Year-End Contribution to Thrift Foundation:

56 Cts. per Guilder; Thrift Foundation Achieves Record Earnings: 6.3%

For the 31st consecutive
rear, Lago Management has
approved an additional contri-
ution to the Thrift Founda-
ion. The company has credit-
d the Thrift Plan account of
ach participant with 56 cents
or every guilder he contri-
nuted during the twelve
months ending October 31,
970.
Management also guaran-
eed a minimum of Fls. 300
o every Thrift participant
contributingg 10% for the full
welve-month period as his
total additional Thrift contri-
rution from the company.
In addition, any participant
vho is separated from the
companyy after October 31, 1970
or any reason other than dis-
;harge or resignation (except
mnder CWA Article 21), will
.Iso be granted an additional
contribution calculated on the
above basis.


Thrift Earnings


The Lago Thrift Founda-
tion announced record earn-
ings of 6.3% for 1970, compar-
ed to 5.0% for 1969.
Fund earnings have been
distributed at this rate to the
account of each Thrift Plan
participant based on his aver-
age credit balance in the Foun-
dation during the year ending
September 30, 1970.

Christmas Withdrawal

The Lago Thrift Foundation
has approved a special Christ-
mas withdrawal. Each em-
ployee was given the option
of withdrawing up to two-
thirds of the company's 1970
additional contribution to his
Thrift account.
The additional contribution
and the Thrift earnings come
from two different sources.
The additional contribution is
an extra sum of money which
the company adds annually to


James M. Ballenger Comments

On Lago Activities during Visit


Mr. J. M. Ballenger, former
president of Lago and the
current manager of Creole's
Refining Department, visited
the refinery on Monday, Nov-
ember 23, to attend a meeting
of the Lago Board of Direc-
tors. While here, he also at-
tended a luncheon with the
Management Committee..Some
of his observations during this
visit are summarized below:
On Safety: "Everyone at Lago
should be very proud of the
record achieved to date. I hope
this can be continued through
the end of the year and into

the Thrift account of each
participant. The Thrift earn-
ings represent the money
which the total Thrift capital
earned in a year from invest-
ments in high quality securi-
ties.

are possible in off-the-job sa-
fety, and especially in traffic
safety, if everyone devotes the
same attention to safety off
the job as they do on the job."
(As a matter of fact, a joint
Lago-Esso Marketing island-
wide traffic safety campaign
is now being developed for
1971).
On Refinery Construction
Work: "It's always good to
see building activities in a re-
finery. It's a healthy sign. The
work on the HDS project is
quite impressive, but, in addi-
tion, considerable progress has
been made on the visbreaker
furnace project as well."
On Working for Creole: "Ac-
tually it is surprising how
many of my old friends from

30th Service Anniversary November


Leonardo Figaroa began
his Lago career as Laborer
"D" in the Mechanical De-
partment in July 1938. He
advanced to tinsmith helper
"A" in 1943. During the
next two years, Mr. Figa-
roa worked in the various
tinsmith categories pro-
gressing to "A" class in
1946.
Following a two-year
break in service due to re-
signation, he was reem-
ployed in the Boiler Section
as boilermaker helper "B".
A subsequent promotion
made him boilermaker hel-
per "A" in 1952. In 1959
he advanced to boilermaker
"A". This title was chang-
ed to metal tradesman "A"
- Boiler in 1967.
Mr. Figaroa observed his
30th service anniversary on
November 27.

Ex-Lago Man G. Arrindell Expands

Service Facilities for Ledeen


Granville L. Arrindell. who
left Lago in 1967 to set up his
Mechanical Repairs Company,
is now the authorized service
representative for Ledeen. A
Textron Company, Ledeen has
supplied instrumentation equip-
ment for many of the new
projects at Lago, including
the HDS project.
Assisting Granville in mak-
ing his company qualify as a
service organization for Le-
deen equipment was Cliff Ter-
ry, Ledeen's sales program
manager. Granville's Mech-
anical Repairs, which has 13
employees, is now a contractor
to Lago for maintenance and
repair of Ledeen equipment.
Granville's company is also a
sub-contractor for Parsons, the
main contractor for Lago's
HDS project.
Mr. Terry said that Gran-
ville's company is now well es-
tablished and can indepen-
dently render service for Le-
deen to Lago and other com-
panies in the Caribbean, such
as Creole-Amuay. Therefore,
Mr. Terry is returning to the
Ledeen factory in Pacoima,
California, after a few years
in Aruba.
Granville recently started
on a 2100 square foot addition
to his machine shop. The new
building will also contain a
600 square foot second floor
as office space. Also, additio-
nal machines will be purchas-


ed to provide more complete
machining facility in this ex-
pansion project.
Owner and general manager
of Mechanical Repairs, Gran-
ville worked for 21-1 years
with Lago and had been a su-
pervisor of the Machine Shop
for about five years. In start-
ing his business he was as-
sisted by the Lago Small Bus-
iness Committee in purchasing
some surplus machines.
The service which his com-
pany provides includes the in-
stallation and repair of mech-
anical, electrical, pneumatic
and hydraulic equipment. In
addition to machining, his
shop is also equipped for
handling welding and painting
jobs.
On the occasion of his visit
to Ledeen's operations in Aru-
ba, Mr. Sam Gray, vice presi-
dent and general manager of
Ledeen, and Cliff Terry were
hosts to a hospitality dinner
for a group of 75 Lago em-
ployees and Parsons' staff.
The highlight of the evening
at the Esso Club was a pre-
sentation by Cliff Terry of
NASA slides of the Apollo 10
and 11 moon shots. Mr. Terry
pointed out many comparisons
of similar tasks required to
construct and operate a new
plant, such as the HDS facili-
ties, that closely match the
operation and control of a trip
to the moon


Granville Arrindell's shop and office addition is about four
times his present shop space. The 2100 square foot new shop
space and a 600 square foot second floor office will cost
about FIs. 80,000.

Tank 162 Gets Polyester Bottom;

New Material is Non-Corrosive


One of the Lago tanks
which was provided with a
Polyester non-corrosive and
leakproof bottom recently was
Tank 162. It is located in the
crude field area of the tank
farm.
In about four weeks, two
layers of reinforced fiberglass,
bonded together with a poly-
ester resin providing a tough
and solid coating, was laid as
a new %-inch thick plastic
bottom for the 80,000-barrel
crude tank.

The work was performed
under supervision of Tresco
Inc. of Oklahoma under a
one-year guarantee. This com-


pany has already provided
more than 3,000 tanks
throughout the world with
this plastic type bottom.
A crew of six men of Ars-
ton Corporation did the job
under supervision of a Tresco
representative. Before apply-
ing the resin and fiberglass
material, the bottom surface
had to be sandblasted to
white metal.
The polyester material is
not only corrosion resistant
and strong, but the overall
cost is also lower than the
cost of a new steel bottom,
says Franklin E. Dowling of
Mechanical Engineering, who
was charged with the project.

The 117-foot diameter tank required 20,000 square feet of Some spots that need special treatment are the bases of the
