of Esso's protective paint
which is marketed under the
trade name Rust-Ban.

In addition to several ses-
sions, the salesmen witnessed
field demonstrations and gain-
ed experience at job sites i

First Traffic Mirror
Installed on Blind
Corner at Storehouse
A novelty to Lago and per-
haps to traffic in Aruba is a
traffic mirror that was in-
stalled last week on a blind
corner southeast of the Store-
house.
Mounted on a gate post, the
36-inch diameter circular,
convex mirror provides visibi-
lity in both directions around
what was formerly a hazard-
ous blind corner. Though traf-
fic at that spot is in one dir-
ection only, namely from
west to east, the cars parked
east of the Storehouse may
cause difficult traffic situa-
tions when backing out of
their stalls.
The mirror has been placed
at such an angle that it does
not permit reflection of sun

From Aruba, radio waves
traveled around the world Oc-
tober 17 and 18 with young
voices carrying messages to
other young people in many
parts of the world. It was
"Jamboree on the Air" that
weekend.
Assisted by the Amateur
Radio Club of Aruba, the boy
scouts of the Antillean Boy
Scouts Organization Aruba
Chapter made nearly a hun-
dred radio contacts with boy
scouts in North, Central and
South America, Europe, the
Middle East, Africa, Austra-
lia, and New Zealand. They
also spoke with World Jam-
boree Headquarters in Gene-


va, Switzerland.
Two stations were operat-
ing for 48 hours that week-
end, one in the Santanero
troophouse at Dakota and the
other in a building at Lago
Heights.
Radio hams who manned
the San Nicolas station were
Sylvan Paul, Marciano An-
gela, Godwin Tames, all La-
go employees; and Mati Vro-
lijk and Theo van der Hilst.
The operators at the Dakota
station included Humphrey
Maasdamme, Alphonsus Geer-
lings, Theodoor Orman, Do-
minico Britten (Lago em-
ployee), Adolf Kock and Ray-
mond Richardson.

About 25 instrument men and five electricians recently fol-
lowed a Relay Logic Circuit Course given by Felix Bikker,
an area supervisor in Mechanical-Instrument. The theoreti-
cal course, to be followed by a practical part, was to ac-
quaint the tradesmen with emergency shutdown systems
for the new HDS units.

ISix New Scout

After Completing
A short, but interesting
ceremony took place in the
Seroe Colorado School Con-
ference Room on Friday, Oc-
tober 18. The occasion mark-
ed the completion of a Lea-
dership Training Course
whereby six members of the
Seroe Colorado Girl Scout
Association were installed as
leaders
The twelve-hour training
program given over a one-
week period was under the
direction of Mrs. Frances
Buchanan. The wife of J. R.
Buchanan of Process-Terminal,
she had previously taught
such a course to American
Girl Scouts in Caracas. This
was the first time in recent
years that this program was
held in Seroe Colorado.
The installation ceremonies,
which began at 11 a.m., in-
cluded presentation of the
Girl Scout World Association
pin to the leaders, speeches
by Mrs. Buchanan, Mrs. Mar-
jorie Persons and Reverend
J. Calitis of the Seroe Colo-

rado Community Church. Al-
so present were the adult .mem-
bers of the Seroe Colorado Girl
Scout movement. Six cadettes,
who formed the Color Guard,
performed the flag ceremony.
The happy occasion was con-
cluded with snacks and re-
freshments.
The local chapter of the
Girl Scout Association of the
U.S.A. now has nine leaders
who are in charge of three
troops: Brownies, Juniors and
Cadettes. The new board is as
follows: Marjorie Persons,
chairman; Caroline Trusty,
vice chairman; Delores Foley,
secretary / publicity; Barbara
Hodges, treasurer / supplies;
Phyllis Boyack, Juliette Lowe

Lauchlan, international rel-
ations, and Frances Buchanan,
training.
The girls meet once a week
at the Youth Canteen where,
in addition to regular scout
activities, they assist other
groups or service clubs carry
out special projects.

FIs. 3,915 in CYI Awards Presented To Fifteen Top Winners at Dinner

Fifteen employees, nine of
Mechanical, four of Process,
one of Technical and one of
Marketing, were special
guests at a CYI dinner Octo-
ber 22. These top CYI reci-
pients received awards total-
ing Fls. 3,915 from Assistant
General Manager Eugene C.
Foley at the Strand Hotel. All
CYI winners of Fls. 100 and
up are honored at a special
CYI dinner.
Attending the presentations
were also the department
managers of the winners,
their immediate supervisors
who assisted them, and two
CYI Committee members.
The highest single initial
award of Fls. 605 that even-
ing was presented to Domi-
nico Leest, an area supervisor
in Mechanical-M&C General.
His idea was to fabricate a
steel cradle to move heavy
compressors and turbine ro-
tors.

Cipriano Geerman, an area
supervisor in Mechanical-
Shop Zone, earned an initial
award of FIs. 550 for his idea
to install a universal joint be-
tween the steering hydraulic
pump and the driver on the
F-2-53 heavy crane.
A supplemental award of
Fls. 540 went to Eusebio Kool-
man, a tradesman A in Mech-
anical-Shop Zone. His idea,
which previously won him an
initial award of Fis. 120, call-
ed for alterations to the moor-
ing hook assemblies on Finger
Piers 1, 2 and 3.

Assistant Operator Emite-
rio Croes of Process-Fuels Di-
vision had two top ideas
adopted. His idea to use the
one-inch 98% sulphuric acid

return line of acid pumps No.
2650 and No. 2591 directly to
the Podbielnlak from the 4-
inch main acid line at the
Acid Treating Plant won Fls.
450. His second idea called for
extending the 2-inch Pod unit
rundown line presently tied in
at Tank 208 header to the 10-
inch sewer brass line or con-
nect it to Tank 600 overhead
line. For this idea he earned
Fls. 110, including a bonus of
Fls. 60 because the idea per-
tained to an announced CYI
problem area.
The idea of Engineering As-
sistant "A" B. R. van der Lin-
den of Mechanical-Engineering
earned him Fls. 240. He sug-
gested to improve all pumps
with large stuffing toxes
which use packing.

Juan C. Croes, an assistant
operator in Process-Light Hy-
drocarbons, suggested to in-
stall a 3-inch line with valves
and T-connection on pumps
1322 and 1323 at LEAR-1. He
was awarded Fls. 200.
An initial award of FIs. 185
went to Samuel A. Pantophlet,
a machinist A in Mechanical-
Central Tool Room. He sug-
gested to install oilers on the
tugger hoist and capstan at
the West Pier.
The idea of Nicomedes Pan-
neflek, a machinist A in
Mechanical-Shop Zone, earned
him Fls. 160. His idea was to
install long throat bushings
and packing rings in stuffing
boxes on pumps 1548, 1544,
1545, and 2099 at the Tar
Plant.
Mechanical-Shop Zone's Epi-
fanio Rasmijn, a machinist A,
earned Fls. 150 in initial
award for his idea to install
two bench vises in the Mach-

Operator Antonio C. Geer-
man of Process-Light Hydro-
carbons suggested to install
an automatic pressure con-
troller to recycle reactor boos-
ter pumps No. 2323, 2324 and
2611 whenever the reactors
exceed normal operating pres-
sure. He earned Fls. 150 for
this idea.
The idea of Simon B. Webb,
a tradesman A in Mechanical-
Metal Section, called for re-
placing the steel scale on the
gasket cutter by a stainless
steel scale. His CYI award
was FIs. 135.

Girigorio Brion, bunkerman
I of Marketing, suggested to
replace the blind plate in the
12-inch lateral between diesel
tank 235 and fuel oil pump
2427 at the Oranjestad Bunk-
ering Terminal with a 12-inch
soft-seal valve. He earned
Fls. 130 in initial award.
The idea to install one air
filter pot east of No. 6 tar
box earned Fls. 100 for Al-
fredo Bareno, an advanced in-
strumentman of Mechanical-
M&C-Instrument.

Initial awards of FIs. 100
each went to Moises F. Kus-
mus, an engineering assistant
of Technical-Process Engin-
eering, and to Encarnaclon
Boekhoudt, an operator of
Process-Fuels Division. Mr.
Kusmus' idee called for in-
stalling a safety shower in the
Napacid Still area. His award
includes a Fls. 60 bonus as
the idea pertained to a prob-
lem area. Mr. Boekhoudt sug-
gested to extend the present
%-inch warm-up line on all
visbreaker charge pumps at
Combination Units 5-8.

First Traffic Mirror

came from Malcolm G. Mur-
ray, a senior engineer in
Mechanical Maintenance &
Construction Division, after
he had been assigned a park-
ing space exposed to traffic
rounding this corner.
Several improvements in
the mirror mounting and for
weather protection were sug-
gested by Alejandro I. Boe-
zem of Mechanical-Metals
Section. These improvements
were made in the final instal-
lation.
Similar mirrors are being
considered for installation on
other blind corners in the ref-
inery and tank farm areas.

Annuitant's Widow Revisits Aruba; r

Dedicates Gift in Husband's Memory I


A special service was held
at the Seroe Colorado Com-
munity Church on Sunday
morning, October 11. On that
date, three stained-glass win-
dows, which were donated to
the church, were dedicated
during an impressive cere-
mony which began at 11:30.
Specially invited to this oc-
casion were the donors: Ma-
nuel Viana and Bob Steele,
both well-known local busin-
essmen, and Mrs. Florence
Wilken of the U.S.A.
Mrs. Wilken had traveled
all the way from Missouri to
dedicate her gift in memory
of her late husband, George
H. Wilken. Mr. Wilken had
been a shift foreman in the
High Pressure Stills when he
retired in 1947 after sixteen
years with Lago.
Way back in 1939, Mr. and
Mrs. Wilken helped found
what is now the Seroe Colo-
rado Community Church. As
one of the first American for-
eign staff families in the for-
mer Lago Colony, they lacked
many facilities, including a
place of worship.
The first services were held
in the Wilken's home which
stood on the site where the
General Office Building is
now located. Every Sunday,
Mr. Jack Emery, an ordained
minister who worked in the
Stills, conducted services in
the living room. The bedrooms
were rearranged for Sunday
School and special bible classes.
Later on, when the com-

munity became larger, it was
decided to build a church and
send for a full-time minister
from the U.S.A. The Wilkens
once more took the initiative
to collect signatures from the
residents who agreed to pay
the minister's salary.
Now, thirty-one years later,
Mrs. Wilken sat in the church
with her daughter, Mrs. Claire
Doering, her son-in-law Lloyd,
and grandchildren David, Ja-
mes, Deborah and Mark. One
of the most significant mom-
ents for her and her family
was to witness 20-month old
Mark being christened at the
baptismal font which she and
her husband had donated to
the church when it was built.
The baptismal water had also
a special significance: it was
the water which she person-
ally took from the Jordan
River during her visit to the
Holy Land in 1964 and which
she carefully conserved over
the years.
A graceful lady in her sev-
enties, Mrs. Wilken thinks of
Aruba as home. She is happy
to see the many changes, as
they mean progress for the
island. On her previous visit
in 1952 she stayed with her
daughter, Jane Kurtz, who
has since returned to the USA.
During her recent visit, Mrs.
Wilken was the guest of Mr.
and Mrs. Peter Storey at
Bungalow 1504. Incidentally,
Mrs. Storey was one of Mrs.
Wilken's first Sunday School
pupils in the early thirties.

PCAR Sprinkler

With New, More
Approximately 700 fog noz-
zles of the PCAR fire water
sprinkler system are now be-
ing replaced by a new type of
"Bete" spiral fog nozzles. The
existing nozzles clog easily
and require frequent mainten-
ance. The new nozzles of the
non-clogging type are consid-
erably more effective in that
they provide a wider spray,
thus increasing fire safety.
They also require less main-
tenance.
Some 636 of the spiral noz-
zles will be installed to replace
the present nozzles from the
third to the 12th floor of the
PCAR. On each of these floors,
the fire line loops around the
PCAR structure with nozzles
spaced so as to provide effec-
tive cooling in the event of a
fire.

Efficient Nozzles
on ground level, sixteen of the
large type spiral nozzles have
been installed, while on the
slurry exchangers on the first
floor, forty of the new large
nozzles will replace the exist-
ing ones.

The PCAR sprinkler system
is operated by three fire
pumps, connected to eight
mains each rising to different
floors up to the 12th floor.

Work on the nozzle replace-
ment job was started on Au-
gust 21 under direction of
Area Supervisor F. O. Wever.
Project leader is Al Britten
of Mechanical Engineering,
while the project was develop-
ed with the assistance of Wim
Brinkman of Industrial Serv-
ices and Everett Beaujon of
IR-Safety Section.
