It's Time for a Year Round Reminder Every year in October, a Fire Prevention Week is proclaimed by the National Fire Protection Association. From October 4-10, 1970 again special attention is focused on the hazards of fire and on preventive measures. At home, we must always keep matches and lighters well out of the reach of very young children. School-age youngsters should be trained to handle matches carefully, with the under- standing that they are to light them only in your presence and with your permission. Also, never leave small children unattended. As to the kitchen, we should never leave a stove or toaster on when leaving home. And never forget to unplug an electric iron after using. Another important precaution is to keep around your home clean. We must try to change the habits that so fires careless smoking, negligent handling example. We must become intolerant of lead to fire like defective heating equipment, frayed electric cords. We must also watch out for innocent looking aerosol cans which, when used COO close to open fires, can become a bomb! Now, during Fire Prevent- ion Week, is a time to remind ourselves that fire hurts, both physically and financially... and that it can hit any time of the year. Most fires are the result of ordinary human care- lessness and failure to observe basic safety precautions on or off the job. And most of these fires can be avoided! commonly cause of gasoline, for conditions that INTS KING? New Facilities to Keep Harbor Clean (Continued from page 1) to float to the surface of the basin. The oil then collects against a baffle or wall which extends a few feet into the water. The clean water then passes under the baffle into the harbor. The former wood- en baffle has been replaced by a new fireproof and more ef- ficient baffle made of steel and concrete. New Skimmers at the Second- ary Separator Two new rotary skimmers are being installed at the sec- ondary separator which will increase the efficiency of oil recovery. Oil Recovery Facilities for Harbor Shoreline The first phase of a 1500- foot floating oil barrier has been installed recently in the water parallel to the shoreline in the area of the finger piers. Any oil leaking from the shoreline is caught by the barrier and a floating rotary skimmer is used to collect the oil and pump it back to the refinery. Facilities to Recover Harbor Oil Spillage In the event of a major oil spill in the harbor, a floating barrier will be drawn across the mouth of the harbor to prevent the escape of oil into the sea. Once contained by the barrier, the oil will be pump- ed into ghore tanks. Deballasting Tanks and Facilities A new 30,000-barrel tank was placed in service some time ago to separate the oil from the ballast water that is pumped from tankers at the Lago docks. Ballast water from ships using Lago's off- shore berth is handled by two other tanks. These ballast wa- ters now receive extra treat- ment for removal of the oil before the clean water is re- turned to the sea. Oil Dispersant System for Tugs The two Lago tugs have been equipped with facilities to spray a chemical dispersant (called Corexit) onto floating oil slicks. The dispersant, which is harmless to marine life, causes the oil to break up into small droplets which are subsequently destroyed by bacterial action. The process engineering work on these projects was carried out mainly under the supervision of Mr. W. L. Duke, while Mr. G. Sunday of Mech- anical-Engineering was the project engineer. Several of the above pro- jects were original recommen- dations of Lago's Oil Conser- vation Committee and are in line with Jersey's Clean Seas Policy. The new Pipestill Advanced Control Program is initially being developed for No. 8 Pipestill and eventually will be tied into each of Lago's six pipestills. The program, which was developed by Esso Engin- eering, is being adapted for Lago operations by Mr. N. Y. Gaitonde of Esso Engineering and Bob Heath of Lago's Technical-MCS Division. A similar program is currently being used at the Esso Refin- ery, Fawley, England. The training sessions made the personnel aware of the capabilities of the new control program and how it will help the operators in running the pipestills.
