R. L. Trusty sent a congratul-
atory letter to all employees
for this significant safety
achievement and also urged
them to continue to make
working safely a personal goal.

The significance of this
achievement to Lago was com-
memorated by a special ban-
ner at Gates Nos. 1 and 3 with
the wording "Lago's First Full
Year Without a Disabling Ac-
cident. Think Safety, Act Saf-

L. Tromp Advances in Process;

J. Croeze Becomes Area Supervisor

Two employees joined man-
agement ranks recently when
they were promoted to super-
visory posts. Leopoldo Tromp's
advancement made him a
shift foreman in Process-Fuels
Division effective August 1.
Julio ("Juchi") Croeze of the
Mechanical Department was
promoted to area supervisor
in the Instrument Maintenance
Section effective September 1.
Leopoldo began with the
company as an apprentice in
the Lago Vocational School in
1941. Following his gradua-
tion in 1945, he was assigned
to Process-Pressure Stills as
process helper "C". He subse-
quently worked briefly as fire-
man before joining the local
army in 1947.
Upon his return from the
army, he continued working
as fireman and advanced to
houseman in 1948. Later in the
Cracking Department he rose
from levelman to assistant
operator in 1959. His next pro-
motion made him an operator
in 1964. Before his recent pro-
motion to shift foreman he
had acted in that position on
various occasions.
Leopoldo has followed the
Gas Testing course at Lago.
In his leisure time he likes
fishing and gardening. He al-
so enjoys all sports, especial-
ly football, baseball, softball

and trapshooting. He would
like to visit his birth place,
Cuba, in the near future.
Married, he lives in Noord,
with his wife and eight child-
ren, five boys and three girls
ranging in age from 19 to 5.
Juchi began his Lago career
as a mechanical apprentice
"D" in the Lago Vocational
School in 1945. After graduat-
ing in 1949 he was assigned to
the Mechanical Instrument
Section as an instrument hel-
per "B". He advanced to nm-
strumentman "A" in 1956.
Between 1960 and 1968 he
worked on several occasions
as acting sub-foreman in the
Equipment Section and also as
area supervisor. His next pro-
motion to engineering assis-
tant "A" was in 1969 while
working as instrument plan-
ner in Mechanical-M&C. Early
this year he was transferred
to Instrument Maintenance.
Juchi, who recently received
his 25-year service watch, has
followed a personal develop-
ment training program, study-
ing several ICS correspond-
ence courses in his free time.
He completed an Industrial
Instrumentation course in
1962 and in 1965 he received
his certificate for an electro-
nic technician course, part II.
He also followed various

Tension Dynamometer Is Employed

To Prevent Overloading of Cranes

Resembling a spring scale
as used in fish markets, the
tension dynamometer is much
more accurate and has a high-
er range. Its principal applica-
tion is force and weight sens-
Placed between the hook of
a crane and the load to be
lifted, it indicates the pulling
force of the crane's cables.
This reading will prevent over-
loading of the crane since it
tells the crane operator if the
load is within the maximum
capacity of the crane.
Another use of the tension
dynamometer is in dynamic
balancing of machine rotors in
the Machine Shop. Prior to
being put in the balancing ma-
chine, the rotor is weighed
with the tension dynamometer.
The weight of the rotor is a
necessary factor in the calcul-
ation used to dynamically bal-
ance this part. A further use
for tension dynamometers is
in calibrating torque wrenches.

The basic mechanism of the
tension dynamometer is made
up of an alloy steel "C" beam
which deflects in direct pro-
portion to the applied load.
The amount is read on a lin-
ear dial calibrated in pounds.
Its accuracy is to within 1%
of total capacity.
There are seven such dev-
ices in use at Lago from two
different manufacturers, Cha-
tillon and Dillon. Two in the
Machine Shop, one of 500 lbs.
and one of 5,000 lbs. maximum
capacity, are used with the
balancing machine and one of
10,000 lbs. is for general use.
The Central Tool Room has
two (10,000 lbs. and 20,000
lbs.) for cranes and other
weighing applications in the
Two dynamometers of smal-
ler capacity (100 lbs. and 500
lbs.) are used occasionally by
the Fire Section for weighing
C02 cylinders to determine if
they are properly filled.
