Lago Trainees Become Acquainted With Pulsating On Wednesday, July 29, a group of students met in the Esso Club's main lounge. This was the start of a tour which brought them face-to-face with Lago's many huge and com- plex installations. The group comprised college students currently on an eight- week summer training pro- gram and technical students receiving practical training under the Company's Cooper- ative Education Program. After a brief explanation of Lago's operations, Carlos de Cuba of PR/IR-Training in- troduced the film on the S.S. "Manhattan" 's epic voyage "Through the Northwest Pas- sage" in the club's theater. Refinery Life In the bus ride through the refinery under guidance of Severiano Luydens, the stu- dents received an explanation of the various units, their functions and capacity, and were shown various points of interest, including the multi- million dollar HDS project. They later stopped at the Mechanical Shops and the Lab- oratories where they observed employees at work, and where demonstrations of various equipment and products were given. The first such contest to be spons- ored by the Company, the La- go Art Contest has received a total of 100 works of art, var- ying from pencil, pen and ink works to oil and water color paintings. The enthusiasm shown by participants is indicated by the wide selection of topics from participants of all ages. The youngest participant is seven years old, while the eld- est is in his late forties. Since the subject of entries was left entirely up to the participants, art works receiv- ed range from landscapes and portraits to abstract paintings. A three-man independent jury will be named this month to judge the paintings. In ad- dition to the three prizes an- nounced, there will also be special prizes. To give everyone an oppor- tunity to see this interesting collection of art works, the exhibition dates have been changed to the first weekend next month, September 4, 5 and 6. Foundation work for No. 8 C.U. furnace began in May, with completion of the furnace erection sched- uled in December this year. The fourth furnace will be ready for operation approxim- ately in March next year. The modern furnaces will have a new look, with the bot- tom of the furnaces installed 12 feet above ground level on a set of reinforced concrete and steel supports. Each furnace is equipped with ten Esso burners, a new type of burner at Lago which will assure more efficient furnace operation. The burn- ers will fire upwards and will burn pitch instead of fuel gas. This will release more fuel gas for use by the new HDS units. To abate noise, the air sup- ply for the burners will be provided from underground ducts which will be insulated from ground level up to the bottom of the furnace, while mufflers will be installed at the burners. The walls of the 60 feet long, 20 feet wide and 40 feet high furnaces will be lined with heavy duty fire bricks with a high aluminum content On top of each furnace, a 10- foot diameter steel smokestack will be erected with the top rising some 200 feet above the ground. The new furnaces were des- igned by engineers of Esso Research & Engineering while Foster Wheeler Italiana is in charge of the mechanical des- ign and supply. Foundation work and piping installation will be carried out by A. G McKee & Co. and the erection of the furnaces Nwll be done by Saipem. In charge of the process design of the new furnaces was J. L.
