Of Esso Service
At a buffet dinner held Fri-
day night. June 19, at the
Aruba Sheraton Hotel, Esso
Marketing shared Fls 1000 in
prizes to winners of a one-
year contest held among Esso
Service Stations of Aruba and
Curacao.
Running from April 1, 1969
to March 31, 1970, the contest
laid special emphasis on: ser-
vice to customers, good house-
keeping, landscaping and uni-
formed personnel.
The first prize winner was
the Seroe Colorado Esso Ser-
vicenter, with Alky Croes as
manager The pilze Fls. 100
to the manager, and Fls 400
to his personnel.
The Boulevard Esso Servi-
center in Oranjestad, managed
by Joaquim Maduro (a Lago
annuilt;nt won second prize
FIs 100 went to the manager,
ind Fls. 100 to be shared
among the station's personnel.

July 1, 1970, was introduced
to the Esso Dealers.
Mr. Hernandez pointed out
that Esso Marketing's facili-
ties include also the bunker-
mg terminal in Oranjestad
Harbor, and the aviation re-
fueling facilities at the air-
port. These are under the di-
rection of Arturo Thijsen, ope-
rations supervisor.
He stated that we have
good products and our objec-
tive is to provide the public
the service they deserve, bear-
ing in mind that "there is

1943 he worked as a pipe-
fitter helper advancing to
pipefitter B in 1947.
Mr. Figaroa resigned in
1949, but was reemployed
a year later in the IR De-
partment as a training in-
structor-Shops. In 1952 he
became instructor A. He
transferred to Mechanical-
Pipe as a job trainer in
1956. Before his promotion
to area supervisor in 1966,
he had been a job trainer


in Instrument/Metal Sec-
tion.
Mr. Figaroa commemor-
ated 30 years of Lago ser-
vice June 15.

Humbert F. Tjong's first
job at Lago was in the
Dining Hall in June 1940.
He later transferred to
Process-Catalytic & Light
Ends as a process helper I
in 1944. During the follow-
ing three years he worked
as fireman and houseman
on several occasions and
advanced to process helper
A in 1948.
A promotion in 1951
made him levelman. An as-
sistant operator in Process-
Catalytic & Light Ends
since 1966, Mr. Tjong cel-
ebrated his 30th service an-
niversary June 12.

Mechanical Tradesmen Take Up the Slogan: "Expect the Unexpected"


To revive safety conscious-
ness among employees, this
year again a series of safety
meetings were held for trad-
esmen of IMechanical-M&C.
The zone supervisors, regional
supei visors and area supervi-
sors also attended the sessions
with their zone personnel.
The meetings covered saf-
ty hihhlights for 1969 and
fir the fi st five months of
1970, typical job hazards and
an< lent preventive measures.
In each of the one-hour ses-
sions also the five restricted
cases of injury experienced in
Mechanical-M&C this year
were reviewed by E. A, Beau-
jon and A. O Yarzagaray of
PR/IR-Safety. But most of the
meeting was spent on analyz-
ing a typical job situation in-
volving dismantling a pump,
disconnecting pipes and trans-
ferring the pump onto a car-
iage
With the aid of a sketch,
participants helped identify


and list all possible accidents
that may occur in handling
the job. For each of the pos-
sible accidents, preventive
measures that may be taken
were also listed.
While individual and group
thinking is stimulated by these
meetings, each of the groups
of about 40 men also contribu-
tes with suggestions for pre-
venting accidents and improv-
ing overall on-the-job safety.
The discussions were under
direction of Mechanical Train-
ing Coordinator Pedro I.
Arends, assisted by Regional
Supervisor Luis Giel.
For effective on-the-job ap-
plication of what they learn
in these meetings, the employ-
ees were urged to devote a
few minutes to look for pos-
sible hazards and accidents in
order to take preventive mea-
sures each time before they
start on a job and be mindful
of the slogan: "Expect the
Unexpected."

Lago Updates Testing Equipment for Relays and Circuit Breakers


Two new pieces of electrical
testing equipment were re-
cently acquired by Mechani-
cal's Electric Shop. One is a
circuit breaker test set, the
other a relay test table. Re-
lays and circuit breakers are
critical protective devices that
operate to open a circuit in
case of a fault, such as a
short circuit, on a power dis-
tribution system. To assure
that relays and circuit break-
ers operate properly and at all
times (some times in as little
as three-thousandths of a sec-
ond), it is essential that they
be tested regularly or about
once a year.
Both test units replace pre-
sent obsolete equipment which
are too cumbersome to use,
are time consuming and can-
not properly test all the thou-
sands of relays and circuit
breakers at Lago.
The new relay test table has
built-in instrumentation and
all necessary components and
circuitry for precision testing
of all types of single and
three-phase electro-mechanical
protective relays in use in the
refinery. Instrumentation in-
cludes timer, ammeters, volt-
meters, megohmmeter, phase
angle meter, which are group-
ed in a logical panel arrange-
ment for easy observation.


Included with the relay test
table is a variable frequency
generator with frequency me-
ter which can be used to test
more complicated relays.
The new wheel-mounted cir-
cuit breaker test instrument
permits more convenient and
accurate testing of direct ac-
ting circuit breakers. In ad-
dition, it reduces setup time,
improves safety and brings
standardization of testing pro-
cedures. It can run tests with
23,000 amperes p a s si n g
through a circuit breaker, si-
mulating short circuit condi-
tions.
Along with the new equip-
ment, a training program be-
gan June 10 for twelve super-
visors and electricians, divided
in two groups, on the proper
and efficient use of the two
testing devices. Special man-
uals have been prepared for
the course.
In charge of the theoretical
and practical training was
Henry S. Orth, director of
Multi-AMP Institute which
trains technicians for the sup-
plier of the testing equipment,
Multi-AMP Corporation of
Cranford, New Jersey. Mr.
Orth had been associated with
Esso for 28 years. He retired
in December 1962 from Hum-
