Carle Williams Named Assistant Process Manager; Refining Division Split

Into Three Divisions; New HDS Division and Startup Task Force Formed


Effective April 15, 1970, the
existing Refining Division of
the Process Department was
divided into three separate di-
visions reporting directly to
Process Manager J. M. Whit-
lock. These divisions are:
Light Hydrocarbons Division
with Joaquin Croes as divi-
sion superintendent; the Fuels
Division (comprising Stills and
Cracking) with R.E. Morley
Marks as acting division su-
perintendent; the Utilities Di-
vision (comprising Utilities
and Acid/Edeleanu) with Erik
A. Eriksen as acting division
superintendent.
A new Hydrodesulfurization
Division has been formed with
Ralph S. Swingholm as act-
ing division superintendent.
He reports to Carle F. Wil-
liams, who has been named to
fill a new position of assistant
process manager effective
April 15. In the new position,
Mr. Williams is initially charg-
ed with the responsibility for
all aspects of the startup of
the HDS facilities.

the HDS startup task force

Recently, the Lago Art
Contest Committee announced
a set of rules for the forthcom-
ing painting contest among
employees and family mem-
bers. These rules are:
1. All employees (perma-
nent and temporary), their
spouses and children, regard-
less of age, are eligible to
participate in the contest.
2. A contestant may submit
a maximum of three entries,
utilizing in the preparation
of these any of the known
techniques.
3. All paintings should be
original works of art. Paint-
by-number kits, traced paint-
ings, etc. will not be accepted
in the contest.
4. All paintings should be
mounted in such a way so that
they can be properly exhibit-
ed.
5. The paintings should be
submitted to the office of the
Aruba Esso News (rooms 164
& 168 in the G.O.B.) not la-
ter than July 31, 1970.
6. The exhibition will be
held on September 3, 1970 and
remain open to the public
through September 5, 1970.
7. An independent three-
member jury (non-Lago) will
be selected to judge the en-
tries. The judges' decisions
are final.
8. Paintings which have
been awarded prizes in other
contests win not be accepted
in the Lago contest.
9. All contestants should


submit with their entry or en-
tries a properly filled out en-
try form. This form is avail-
able at Lago.
10. Lago will award three
prizes as follows: 1st prize,
Fls. 500 and a plaque; 2nd
prize, Fls. 250.- and a plaque;
3rd prize, Fls. 150 and a
plaque. There will also be ho-
norable mentions.
Employees may pick up the
entry forms for themselves
and family members on bulle-
tin boards and at the same
locations where the Diario is
normally available. Each par-
ticipant should complete a se-
parate form.
To maximize interest in the
contest, the LAC Committee
will publish periodic remind-
ers in the Diario and Aruba
Esso News. Use will also be
made of Lago's TV program
for this purpose, while appro-
priate posters will be distri-
buted throughout the refinery.
This is the first painting
contest to be sponsored by
Lago. Through this competi-
tion the compaify hopes to
stimulate greater interest in
Start and culture in the com-
munity as a whole.

Gerardus Smit has spent
his entire thirty years at
Lago in the Process De-
partment, where he started
as an apprentice operator
in the Hydro-Poly Plant in
1940. He moved up to as-
sistant operator in 1943
and to operator in Catal-
ytic & Light Ends in 1950.
In 1952 he left on an
eight-month, loan assign-
ment to Esso AG, Ham-
burg, Germany. Upon his
return he continued work-
ing in Catalytic & Light
Ends advancing to assis-
tant shift foreman in 1954.














G. Smit

Mr. Smit was promoted
to shift foreman-Cracking
& Light Ends in 1961. In
1964 he also worked in the
Acid & Edeleanu Plant as
technical assistant. That
year he was promoted to
process foreman-Refining.
Mr. Smit, who at present
is process foreman-Light
Hydrocarbons, observed his
service anniversary April 8.

Abelino Theysen joined
the coyipany as messenger
"B" in the Accounting De-
partment. He later worked
as office boy, apprentice
typist, apprentice clerk and
was promoted to Tabulat-
ing Machine operator in
1945 and subsequently to
senior tabulating operator.
In 1961 he progressed to
division head-Materials &
Properties Division. From
1965 to 1967 he worked as
section head-Attest and la-
ter as Sr. systems analyst
in the Systems & Data
Processing Section.
Mr. Theysen, whose ser-
vice anniversary was on


April 22, is section head in
Comptroller's-Internal Con-
trol since July 1969.

Tito I. Geerman of Mech-
anical-Metals Section, was
originally employed in 1937
as laborer "D" in the La-
bor Department. He be-
came senior apprentice 'A'
in 1939. Following a break
in service he was reem-
ployed in the Labor De-
partment in 1941 where he
advanced to pipefitter hel-
per "A" in 1946. In 1965
he was promoted to pipe-
fitter "B". A promotion in
1967 made him metal tra-
desman "A"-Pipe.
On April 11 he commem-
orated his 30th service an-
niversary.

Ricardo Geerman has
spent his entire Lago car-
eer in Mechanical-Electri-
cal. He started as a mech-
anical apprentice "D" in
the Lago Vocational School
in 1940. After graduating
in 1944, he worked as an
electrician helper "A" and
progressed to electrician
"C" a year later.
During 1946 Mr. Geer-
man served in the local ar-
my. After returning to La-
go he worked his way up
to electrician "A" in 1950.
In 1962 he was promoted
to foreman-Electrical. This
title was changed to Fore-
man Equipment Section.
At present an area super-
visor-Electrical, Mr. Geer-
man observed his 30th ser-
vice anniversary April 30.

Over 100 Employees Take Advantage of Lago's New Home Financing Plan


May 1, 1970 was one year
since Lago's Residential Mort-
gage Plan was initiated to as-
sist employees to build or buy
their first home or pay off
existing mortgage on, or make
repairs, addition or renovation
to their present home.
So far over one hundred
applications have been approv-
ed and processed, while the
amount of loan totals about
Fls. 1,000,000. The first two
transactions were processed
as early as July 2, 1969. Some
forty applications are still be-
ing processed.
The financing is arranged
through a mortgage on the
home up to an amount of two
years' gross salary of the em-
ployee, depending on his finan-
cial status. To qualify for a


loan, the employee must have
an equity of at least 5% in
cash or property.
The repayment period of
the loan depends on the em-
ployee's age and may run up
to 20 years while the amount
of redemption is determined
for each individual case.
Although the new home
financing plan also makes a
number of building plans avail-
able free of charge to emplo-
yees, they have free choice of
their own building plan and
location of their home.
The new financing plan is
administered by the Home
Building Foundation with Ed-
ward D. Fowler as chairman;
Earl C. Cook, treasurer; and
Abelino Theysen, Isaac Chin,
members.

The HDS Canteen (at right) opened in February to serve
lunch to residents of Lago Heights Bachelor Quarters as
well as field and office personnel working on the HDS Pro-
ject site. Operated by Crawley-McCracken International Cat-
ering, the facility offers a variety of sandwiches, soup and
cold drinks. At the adjacent lunch shelter over 400 people
can be seated. A similar service is available at the new
Hydrogen Plant area, north of Powerhouse No. 1.


X-Ray technician Otis Whitfield of Chicago Bridge (sub-
contractor of Parsons) operates the remote control switch
which activates the Isotope camera. Below, the isotope X-ray
camera is used on tank 764 to insure that proper plate weld
has been made on the seam on new tanks of the HDS Project.

Edgar Maduro, an assistant operator at the PCAR, proudly
displays a few oversize lemons which he grows in his yard.
The lemon tree, originating from a slip planted in 1963,
produces over 100 lemons each season. Some of the lemons
measure 5 inches in length and 4 inches in diameter.
