1970 Lago Science Fair Winners

Receive Their Prizes at Esso Club

During a special ceremony
on March 26, Lago's Public
Relations Administrator, Mr.
O. V. Antonette, presented
prizes to the twenty-three
winners in this year's Lago
Science Fair. The event took
place at the Esso Club.
After opening remarks by
Science Fair Committee Chair-
man Alex Hoo, Mr. Antonette
addressed the guests and con-
gratulated the winners. Said
he: "We are very pleased with
this year's results both in
terms of quantity and quality.
Compared to 1969,- a higher
degree of enthusiasm was not-
ed among the students and
proof of this was the larger

number of projects on display
submitted by a larger number
of participants. Congratula-
tions with your accomplish-
ments."
Following Mr. Antonette's
remarks, Alex Hoo called the
winners who received their
prizes from Lago's PR Admi-
nistrator. The prizes, all gift
wrapped, were selected by the
winners themselves from a
variety of items displayed by
local firms during the fair.
The prizes included taperecor-
ders, binoculars, cassette play-
ers, cameras, tool boxes, elec-
tric drills, radios, record play-
ers, telescopes and microsco-

banks, general banks, princip-
les of single entry bookkeping
and estate accounting.
Section III covers material
specifically required for the

A "Tool Box" safety talk is
conducted by one of Parsons
Safety Inspectors, Francisco
Thiel, for a group of iron-
workers on the HDS project.
Un charla di seguridad ta
ser conduci na "Caha di Her-
ment" pa uno di e Inspector-
nan di Seguridad di Parsons,
Francisco Thiel, pa un gru-
po di trahadornan cu heru
ariba e proyecto di hidro-
desulfurizacion.

Parsons "Tool Box" Talks Form an Important Link to Promote Safety

As the number of men in the
field on the HDS Project in-
creases, the task of commun-
icating proper safety procedu-
res becomes more important.
A method has been developed
by Parsons Corporation to
reach these men at their job
site with current information
pertaining to a specific job in
an effective manner.
Tool Box Safety Meetings
were developed through years
of worldwide experience by
Parsons safety engineers in
the field. Once the program
was established, the discussion
material is kept up to date
and tailored for use in each in-
dividual construction situation.
This has been the key to suc-
cess. The topics now fill nine
volumes covering everything
from original site clearing
problems to mechanical com-
pletion.
Development of a "safety
attitude" in workmen results
in fewer and less serious ac-
cidents. This attitude is taught
by relating practices to speci-
fic equipment. The discussions
often result in suggestions
from the workmen on better
methods of handling a danger-
ous job situation. This feed-
back provides management
with material to plan improv-
ed programs on a continual
basis.
The "tool box" meetings are
scheduled daily, beginning im-
mediately after the lunch
break at 12:30 p.m. At present
six safety men, Barbarito
Amaya, Jose Dirksz, Bertrand
Rovelet, Simon Geerman,
Francisco Thiel, and Ramiro
E. De Kort (all ex-Lago em-
ployees) handle twenty-five
meetings per week with differ-

ent groups of men throughout
the HDS project site. Each
meeting is limited to 5 or 10
minutes and to one single to-
pic. When discussion tends to
exceed the limit, which is
good, the topic is continued at
the next session.
The foreman is the key to
setting the tempo of discus-
sion on the day's topic, and to
providing pertinent demonstra-
tions on proper use of tools or
equipment.
The "tool box" system of
safety talks becomes the main
stream of communication be-
tween field personnel and
management. One example of
its result was when a recent
supply of safety shoes arrived
in the warehouse. The message
was passed on to field person-
nel by the safety inspectors
and over 180 pair were sold
the first day and over 800
pair to date. Other related of-
ficial news is also communi-
cated through these talks with
equally good results.

While one single plane may
load approximately 15,000 gal-

service up to a dozen large
planes, supplying some 50,000
gallons of fuel during the
busy season. In addition to
fuel, the Aviation Terminal al-

oils.
To learn the latest in air-
craft servicing and refueling,
Arturo Thijzen, Marketing
Operations Supervisor, and
Niles Oduber in November last
year attended a 5-day training
course in Puerto Rico.
As part of Esso's New
Identification Program, the
Aviation Terminal personnel
now sport new uniforms. In
addition, the Terminal build-

white, gray and red colors.
