New Ambulance Has Resuscitators to Help Protect Human Lives The Lago Police recently acquired a new ambulance as replacement for an older type. With glass windows all around, the new ambulance has a wider, longer and higher rear compartment. This com- partment can accommodate three bed patients with atten- dant, while one sitting patient can be transported next to the driver. The ambulance also has double side doors in ad- dition to the double rear doors. A new piece of equipment available in the ambulance is an automatic resuscitator. Other medical equipment in- clude a sealed First Aid kit, a sealed emergency doctor's Effective March 1, 1970, Joaquin Croes was promoted to superintendent of the new- ly designated Light Hydrocar- bons Division in the Process Department. This division is made up of the former Catal- ytic & Light Ends areas and the Refining Control Center. In his new position, Joaquin will be responsible for the processing areas of PCAR, GAR-1, LEAR 1 & 2, FGS, ISAR, AAR-1 & 2, NFAR, and the Refining Control Center. Joaquin, who has been in charge of these areas as operations supervisor since June 1969, has been with the company for over twenty-six years. He is the first Aruban to attain this position without formal college training. His first job was as mes- senger B in the Industrial Re- lations Department. Later he joined the Lago Vocational School and graduated in Au- gust 1948. In 1946 he transferred to Process-Catalytic D division kit, splints, and a manual re- suscitator. There is also a metal stretcher for handling patients with back injuries. Lago has also an auxiliary ambulance which can trans- port two bed patients and one sitting patient. The two ambulances are operated by Lago Police per- sonnel who are qualified first- aid men and know how to operate the manual as well as the automatic resuscitator Air '- where he became levelman in the Catalytic & Light Ends area in 1952. He advanced to assistant operator in 1954 and to operator in 1957. His next promotion in 1962 made him assistant shift fore- man in Catalytic & Light Ends. Here he became a shift foreman in 1964 and subse- quently worked as mainten- ance foreman and maintenance coordination. A 1967 promo- tion made him process fore- man in Catalytic & Light Ends area. Joaquin, who on his own time studied an ICS course in Refinery Operations, followed the Organization Development Lab at Lago in 1964. He also took the Effective Manage- ment Course in 1966 and the Kepner-Tregoe Course Gen- eral in 1968. In his spare time he enjoys stereo music. His other hob- bies include watching football and baseball games. Married, Joaquin has five children, three daughters and two sons. J. Figaroa start- ed as a Lago Vocational School student in 1940 and was assigned to Mechani- cal-Mason. After gradua- tion in 1944, he worked as a machinist helper "B" ad- vancing to machinist "C". Called to military service a year later, he returned to the Machinist Section in 1947 where he was prom- oted to machinist "A" in 1955. This title was chang- ed to equipment tradesman "A" in 1967. Martin F. Figaroa Mr. Figaroa, who pres- ently is acting area super- visor in Mechanical-M&C- General, observed his serv- ice anniversary March 11. Segundo P. de Kort of Mechanical-M&C-General is also a former Lago Voca- tional School apprentice of the 1944 class. His entire company career has been in the Mechanical Depart- ment where he started as an electrician helper "B" and advanced to the elec- trician "A" category in 1951. In 1957 he became foreman in the Electrical Section. This title was changed to area supervisor- Equipment Section in 1966. Since 1969 he has been regional supervisor in Mechanical-M & C-General. On March 11, Mr. de Kort celebrated his 30th service anniversary. Jose Stamper began his Lago career as a mechani- cal apprentice "D" in Mechanical Electrical in 1940. Here he moved up to trades apprentice "A" in 1943, but was called to mi- litary service that same year. Returning in 1946, he was assigned to the Proc- ess-Catalytic & Light Ends as process helper "D". He became process helper in 1951. Mr. Stamper advanced to levelman two years later. An assistant operator in Catalytic & Light Ends since 1964, he observed his 30th service anniversary March 11. Cornelis M a d u r o of Mechanical-Metal Section was originally employed as a mechanical apprentice "D" in 1940 assigned to the Boiler Section. He advanc- ed to mechanical appren- tice "A" in 1942. PHYSICAL SCIENCE PRIZE: Newton Richfield Mirror Telescope, made Loor of Colegio Arubano. by Frank ^ b^s& 1970 Lago Science Fair Inspires 75 Young Minds to Create 40 Projects On Monday, March 16, at 4:30 p.m. the 1970 Lago Science Fair officially opened its display of students' pro- jects in the Bonaire Club, San Nicolas. The ribbon cutting ceremony was performed by Lago's president, Mr. J. M. Ballenger. Alex Hoo, Lago Science Fair Committee Chairman, welcomed the guests and visi- tors and called on Dr. F. M. A. Saladin, one of the judges, to announce the winning pro- jects. Following this announce- ment Alex Hoo introduced President Ballenger. Mr. Bal- lenger congratulated the win- ners and thanked all those who helped make this year's science fair a success: stud- ents, teachers, independent ad- visers and members of the Science Fair Committee. Mr. Ballenger concluded his remarks with the news that Lago will sponsor another science fair in 1971. On display were 41 projects representing various fields of science, such as biology, phy- sics, chemistry, mathematics and technology. There were 24 individual projects and 17 group projects from 75 par- ticipants of eleven schools. Among the guests at the opening were government of- ficials, representatives of the press, radio and TV, school principals, teachers and stud- ents, parents of the partici- pants and other visitors. The three judges for this year's projects were Dr. F. M. A. Saladin, surgeon; Dr. G. de Vries, veterinarian; and Ir J. van Beuzekom, Public Works Dept. head. In Oranjestad Lago's fourth Science Fair is open at the Sociedad Bolivariana today from 4:30-8:30 p.m. and to- morrow, from 2-8 p.m. THIRD INDIVIDUAL PRIZE winner was George Thomas of John F. E sala di cas ariba trailer ta comodo y tin bon espacio. The first trailer court to be set up in Aruba took shape recently when twenty-five trailer units were moved to their bases in Seroe Colorado. The trailer homes will house key personnel of Parsons who are assigned to the HDS Pro- ject. The aircondltioned units are fully furnished and equipped. Each unit contains a double bedroom and a single bed- room, a living room, a bath- room, a kitchen-dinette, LPG gas stove, refrigerator, and washing machine. The interior walls are provided with wood paneling and the floors of the living room and master bed- room are carpeted. The other floors have rubber tiles. The trailer court is located east of the Seroe Colorado School between Main Street and Seventh Avenue. Resting on six concrete supports, the homes are ready for use after installing connections for wa- ter, electricity, gas, sewer and central airconditioning system. Each trailer unit is 60 feet long, 12 feet wide and some 10 feet high. Supported by two I-beams, the homes are made of steel frames with aluminum panel- ing on the outside, aluminum roofing and awning windows. Each unit weighs about seven tons. The units are also equip- ped with an aluminum patio awning. Former Accounting Employee Is Now Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Rudolph (Tim) Chang- Yit, a former Lago employee, was recently promoted to the rank of associate professor of psychology at Moorhead State College in Moorhead, Minne- sota, U.S.A. He had been as- sistant professor since Sep- tember, 1966. Dr. Chang-Yit was an ac- counting clerk for 12 years at Lago. He came to Aruba in 1945 and Worked in the Mat- erials and Commissary Ac- counting Division for several years until he was transferred to the Properties Accounting Division. He left for the Unit- ed States in 1957 to enter the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, where he earned a B.A. degree in psy- chology in 1960 and his M. S. degree in 1963. He also spent a year at the Yerkes Labora- tories of Primate Biology in Orange Park, Florida, engag- ed in research with monkeys and chimpanzees. In 1963 he began work on his doctoral degree in comparative psy- chology (animal behavior) at the University of South Da- kota in Vermillion, South Da- kota, finally obtaining his Ph. D. in August, 1968. Dr. Chang-Yit is married to the former Lazette Bevers of Blair, Oklahoma. Mrs. Chang- Yit is a registered nurse, with a B.S. degree in nursing from the University of Oklahoma and an M.A. degree in socio- logy from North Dakota State University. She is presently director of nursing education at the St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing in Fargo, North Dakota. Bell, pro- cess foreman-Shore Oper- ations, left Lago and Aruba on retirement. One can ima- gine then a feeling of nostal- gia that must have overcome him at 3 a.m. March 10 when he passed five miles south of Aruba on the cruise ship SS "Oriana".
