Editor: Miss L. I. de Lange J. M. de Cuba Photographer Printed by: Verenigde Antilliaanse Drukkerijen N.V. How Old Is the First Safety Rule ? To indicate that something is very old, there is a saying: As old as Adam. In his days, safety rules were not spelled out, but it is known that the first safety rule was found in the Bible. It was written in the Old Testament in the book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 22, Verse 8, where Moses issued the following (safety) rule: "If you build a new house, put a parapet (protective railing) around the roof; otherwise, if someone falls off, you will bring bloodguilt upon your house." Moses lived about 1500 years B.C. This means that many centuries before Christ there have been rules to protect human lives against accidents. If we realize that there are still many places where there is a hazard of falling from a height or through a hole in the floor because there is no railing, then we could say that safety-wise very little progress has been made through the ages. Employee interest in the CYI program continued to increase in 1969, topping all four previous years with a to- tal of 464 ideas compared with 347 ideas in 1968, the next best of these years. Although the percentage of participation increased from 10.85% in 1968 to 14.39% in 1969, the percentage of adopt- ed ideas dropped from 43.8% in 1968 to 39.01% in 1969. This indicates that the quality of ideas received last year was less compared to 1968. The 1969 CYI report attri- butes the higher participation in the CYI program to: 1. Continued publicity in the company publications. 2. In- creased supervisor acceptance of and involvement with the CYI program. 3. Presentation of awards of Fls. 100 or more at special dinners, attended by the immediate supervisors of the suggesters. Three of these events were held in 1969. During 1970, the report sta- tes, greater attention will be paid to publicity for stimulat- ing "cost saving" ideas. A separate fuel pier at the site has now been equipped by Lago with one dual pump sup- plying Esso Regular and Ex- tra gasolines and with one pump dispensing marine die- sel. The pumps are fed from three 2,000-gallon shore tanks. As needed, the tanks will be refilled by tank trucks.
