Doctorate at Ne
Not many scholars may
have earned their doctor's de-
gree by dedicating their sum-
mer vacations for ten years to
go back to school, take some
twelve courses and prepare a
thesis.
Dean V. Thompson, super-
vising principal of the Seroe
Colorado School at Lago, did
just that. Since 1959 he has
spent four to six weeks of his
summer vacation at the New
York University every year
(except 1966). Last year he
turned in his thesis which was
approved in August. On Fri-
day, January 16, 1970 he suc-
cessfully defended his dissert-
ation before a 5-man doctoral
examining board of the New
York University. Officially,
Mr. Thompson will become Dr.
Thompson at graduation cer-
emonies this month when the
doctorate will be conferred.
His thesis is titled: "The
Effects of Relative Position in

The thesis deals chiefly with
the dual function of the school
administrator in his role of

Group of Lago Men Help Rebuild

West Pier in Record Time: 70 Days


In 70 days, the former Gas-
oline Dock No. 1 has been
completely reconstructed from
a wooden structure into a new
steel and concrete pier. Hence-
forth the pier will be called
West Pier.
Dismantling work on the old
Gasoline Dock started Novem-
ber 19, 1969. Actual construc-
tion of the new facility start-
ed December 8 last year while
the project was ready for use
on January 28, 1970.
Although scheduled for com-
pletion in 41/ months, the

West Pier was completed two
months earlier and at a lower
cost than the original estimate
of $500,000.
The new pier, which will be
able to accommodate tankers
up to 27,000 tons, will help as-
sure safer operations because
of its fireproof structure and
improved hose handling facili-
ties built as part of the struc-
ture.
While the two existing
mooring cells will be used, the
pier includes a new 35 feet
long, 16 feet wide, hose handl-
ing structure with a new con-
crete slab deck, new loading
manifold, pipe bank and new
stern mooring dolphin.
Connected to the pier are
some seven product lines to
load low-lead naphthas, kero-
sene, gas oil, diesel oil and
fuel oil. Drinking water and
ship's bunkers will also be
available at the pier.
The West Pier has been
equipped with deballasting
facilities and slop recovery
system to control water pol-
lution.
A special feature to mini-
mize hose transfer operations
is the new manifold that has
been designed for clean load-
ings on the east side (naph-
tha, kerosene, gasoil) and dir-

Lago Provides Bunker Facilities

At H-Dock in Oranjestad Harbor


To assist in providing max-
imum bunker facilities for the
Oranjestad Harbor, Lago at
the end of last month complet-
ed the installation of bunker
lines at H-Dock. This was the
only dock which could not sup-
ply bunkers to the increasing
number of tourist and freight
ships calling at Oranjestad.
Completed in a record time
of about three weeks, the pro-
ject included laying a pipe
bank of four lines, 860 feet
long, consisting of one 10-inch
fuel oil line; one 8-inch marine
diesel oil line; one 4-inch gas-
oil line and one 14-inch air
line.
Built at a cost of approxim-
ately $40,000, the work was
carried out under direction of

The "Sunward" chartered by
the Norwegian Caribbean
Lines of Miami carried a spe-
cial load when she docked in
Oranjestad Harbor January 26.
One deck of the cruise ship
contained the Caribbean Trade
Fair, which is jointly sponsor-
ed by the Florida State Dep-
artment of Commerce and the
Norwegian Caribbean Lines.
Products of some thirty
companies from Florida com-
pletely lined the port and star-
board sides from bow to stern.
The products included building
and construction materials and
large items for the tourist in-
dustry, such as pleasure boats
and mobile homes.
On a 9-day tour of the Car-
ibbean islands, the Sunward
and fair already visited some
Caribbean ports and will stop
next in Curacao, Jamaica,

Education

Parsons has five field safety
inspectors to take the program
into the field. They observe
and correct safety infractions,
establish safety procedures be-
fore work starts in project
areas. They hold approxim-
ately 20 safety "talks" or
"tool box meetings" per week
to foremen and crews on job
sites. These informal 10-min-
ute sessions provide the work-
men with an opportunity to
express ideas and ask quest-
ions. The discussions also pro-
vide the basic building block
for an accident prevention pro.
gram.
The inspectors investigate
all accidents involving men
and/or equipment to insure
proper first-aid treatment and
to take measures to prevent a
similar incident. Booklets, out-

Protective Equipment
Protective equipment issued

For maximum pedestrian
safety, busses move up to 60
men at a time from the en-

starting time and back at
quitting time. Pickups provide
transportation to various job
locations during the day.

Chemical toilet units were placed in use the first time in
Aruba recently by Parsons Corporation on the HDS Project.
They, are approved by the U.S. Dept. of Health for use in all
50 states and foreign, government sponsored, construction
projects on locations where pressured running water or
plumbing facilities are not available. Every second day a
special tank truck pumps out the waste and replaces it with
fresh chemical disinfectant. The units are cleaned and
scrubbed inside daily by a trained sanitation crew. At pre-
sent twelve units are in use and more will be added in the
future as the number of employees increases.

Principal Dean Thompson Earns Doctorate

role.
In all, Mr. Thompson finish-
ed some sixty courses in var-
ious fields.
The sponsoring committee
for the doctoral candidate con-

by Professors Robert L. Gran-

tion of Teacher Dorothy Joseph, who has been with the school faculty for over 16 years.

son. But, says Mr. Thompson,
he had other promoters as
well. They were his wife, Do-
ris, who was a constant source
of encouragement, and Miss
Diana Arends, the School's
secretary who typed and re-
typed the 110-page thesis.
A graduate of Houghton
College in 1938, Mr. Thomp-
son obtained his Master's de-
gree in Education from Cor-
nell University in 1950.
He came to Lago on August
23, 1951 as principal of the
Lago Community Schools
which included a high school,
a grade school and a kinder-
garten. He brought along 13
years of experience in educa-
tion. From 1947 to 1951 he
had been supervising principal
of the Heuvelton Central
School in New York, with an
enrollment of 452 students.
In his more than 18 years
with Lago, Mr. Thompson
saw many changes in the
school population, faculty and
facilities.
The Seroe Colorado School
now has 165 students from
kindergarten to the 9th grade
and the equivalent of twelve
fulltime teachers.
His doctorate secured and a
lifetime objective fulfilled, the
soon-to-be Dr. and Mrs. Thomp-
son plan to enjoy their first
summer vacation together
since 1958.
