Dick Bauer's Invention Will Coat

Miles of Hot and Cold Pipelines


Richard (Dick) H. Bauer
recently was awarded his fifth
patent in two years' time. The
patent covers a system for
rapidly spraying foamed insu-
lations onto pipelines which
are to be used in transporting
heated or chilled fluids such
as heavy fuel oils or liquefied
natural gas (.2500 F.).
The system has been licens-
ed by Esso Research on a per
mile royalty basis to eight
large European, U.S. and Can-
adian contractors. Over 250
miles of pipelines have been
insulated by this technique in
the past two years, notably a
45-mile line owned by Esso
Standard Italiana.
A 600-mile long crude oil
pipeline across Alaska from
the ice-bound North Slope to
a warm southern Alaskan
port may also be insulated
through this method.
Dick's invention contains an
improved and more economical
method of providing insulation
in the form of plastic foam
such as polyurethane.
Depending on the need, the
foam insulation is sprayed
from a thickness of one to


three inches all around the
pipe, while a subsequent water
and vapor barrier in the form
of a mastic or other type
coating and paper wrapping
is applied.
A senior project engineer
with Esso Engineering's Tech-
nology Division, Dick filed the
patent application in 1965. He
transferred to Lago on August

The course covers numer-
ous facets of a chemical en-
gineering curriculum, includ-
ing mathematics, chemistry,
process engineering topics and
instrumentation.
A laboratory assistant, Elio
gained more technical and
theoretical background through
the course. This will help him
in his present work on quality
development and control of
naphthenic acids.
With nearly ten years of
service, Elio previously work-
ed in Technical's Engineering,
Economics and Planning, and
Process Engineering divisions.
He has been with Technical-
Lab since February 1968.

program on January 12. For-
ty-five posters were submitted
by 43 participants from six
different schools.

the LSF Committee consider-

After opening remarks by

said on TV that this was the
first poster contest held since
the Lago Science Fair was
first organized in 1967. He
congratulated the winner and
other participants. "Really
remarkable," he said, "was
the number of entries submit.

Hydrodesulfurization Project Adds

14 New Units to Lago Refinery r ,


The hydrodesulfurization
(HDS) facilities will include
fourteen new units Thirteen
of them will be erected on the
reclaimed land southeast of
Powerhouse No. 1 while one
unit will be built on the plot
north of Powerhouse No. 1.
The block layout plan on this
page gives the names of the
units.
The thirteen units will be
located on an area of approx-
imately 700,000 square feet,
which area is shown on picture
A. The top picture shows the
model of these 13 units.
The hydrogen units will rise
on an area of approximately
80,000 square feet north of
Powerhouse No. 1. The con-
struction site is shown on pic-
ture B.
The fourteen HDS units will
receive approximately 200,000

barrels a day of feed stocks
with various high sulphur con-
tents from the existing refin-
ery units and convert them in-
to low sulphur products. By-
products from these units will
be sulphur in flake form and
naphtha
The new pier at the HDS
site will serve for sulphur
shipments.
Work is also in progress on
nine new tanks of 400,000 bar-
rels each and a small one
(80,000 barrels) in the Tank
Farm area to provide storage
for the HDS units. Four new
400,000-barrel tanks now un-
der construction in the Snow
Pile area will provide sea-
sonal storage space. These new
tanks will increase Lago's
storage capacity with over
5,200,000 barrels.

The impact of the Hydro-
desulfurization (HDS) Project
on the Refining Division nec-
essitates an expansion of
forces.
To meet this need and pre-
pare for the startup and ope-
ration of the fourteen HDS
units, more than 100 men from
the Supply and Terminal Div-
isions of Process Department
and from the Mechanical De-
partment will be trained in
principles of refining in the
next six months.
The first course, taught
from 7 a.m. till 4 p.m., start-
ed January 12 in the Admin-
