First- of all, I wish to extend -
also on behalf of my associates -
Season's Greetings to all Lago em-
ployees and annuitants, their fam-
ilies, and friends.
Adding to a happier season for many workers and
their families this year and for some time to come
are the various building activities in our refinery
that provide job opportunities. The most important
of these activities is the largest single project ever
undertaken at Lago: the hydrodesulfurization units
on which work is in progress. Other projects include
tankage facilities for these new plants and the new
sea berth to accommodate larger tankers.
These activities provide a greater measure of job
security for our employees as well. They will also
give a healthful boost to Aruba's economy in the
next few years.
The bustling construction everywhere in the ref-
inery sounds much like the jingle bells of Christmas.
It's the kind of music that indicates that Lago is
keeping in rhythm with technological advance.
We are proud that, in part, these projects have
been made possible through the cooperation, dedi-
cation and understanding of a fine group of em-
ployees such as ours.
Your continued efforts will help strengthen man-
agement in its resolve to achieve greater progress
for Lago and its employees, and for Aruba.
With confidence in the future and in our employ-
ees' willingness to continue contributing their share

Thirteen Instrumentmen Graduate


In Electronic
December 5, 1969 marked
the end of a 9-month intensive
training program for thirteen
men from Mechanical-Instru-
ment. That noon they were
presented with their Electro-
nic Instrumentation certificate
during a luncheon at the Es-
so Club.
With Roy Fritz of Philco Ford
as instructor, the group began
their course on March 24 this
year in the classrooms of the
Laboratory. The course includ-
ed 8-hour instruction during
working hours, with four
hours a day theoretical train-
ing and some four hours prac-
tical work.


Instrumentation
Subjects covered included
those taught by the two pre-
vious courses, such as related
mathematics, related physics
and chemistry, electronics I &
II, advanced electronic instru-
ments and equipment, DDC
principles, and maintenance
and operation of oscilloscopes.
They also became thoroughly
acquainted with telemetering,
the Herco temperature data
acquisition system (TDAS),
IDI system, variac level equip-
ment, color and sulphur anal-
yzers.
For lab work they used such
equipment as electronic in.

ASU Gets Donation for Sport Park


The seven members of the
former Lago Sport Park
Board were honored during a
recent dinner at the Esso
Club. The president of the
Aruba Sport Union, Mr. I. A.
Franka, also a special guest,
was presented with a Lago
donation by Lago's Public &
Industrial Relations Manager,
Mr. B. E. Nixon.
As a token of appreciation
for their past service on the
L.S.P. Board which ceased


functioning in December 1968,
each member was presented
with a plaque inserted in fin-
ished wood bearing the shape
of Aruba. Inscribed on the
plaque are the name and per-
iod served by each board
member.
In presenting the plaques,
Mr. Nixon said: "As in the
past, we are pleased again to
offer you something as a to-
ken of our appreciation and

bert (Roro Hernandez was
promoted to Assistant Mark-
eting Representative assigned
to the Esso Nederlandse An-
tillen N V. His responsibilities
will include Bunkering and
Aviation Operations, Retail,
Industrial and Consumer Sales.
He will now be located in the
Oranjestad Bunker Station
Terminal Building.
Up to his promotion. Roro
had been a mechanical engin-
eer in Mechanical-Materials
since 1966. In that year he
obtained his degree from the
Southern Illinois University.
Roro began his career as a
Lago Vocational student in
1948. Following his graduation
he was assigned to the Mach-
inist Section. In 1958 he trans-
ferred to Mechanical-Admini-

the Strand Hotel December 9.

No one really knows for
sure who had the bright idea
of decorating Christmas trees
with wax candles. That, no
doubt, is when we began hav-
ing trouble with Christmas
tree fires.
There are several suggest-
ions to help reduce the pos-
sibility of a Christmas tree
fire in your home:
- Do not bring the tree in-
to the house until ready
for use. Keep the trunk
in water to help prevent
excessive drying out.
- Saw off the trunk at an
angle at least one inch
above the original cut and
keep the trunk standing
in water while the tree is
in the house.
- Locate the tree away from
sources of heat and dry-
ing and away from exits.
Remove the tree as soon
as possible after the holi-
days.

Aguinaldos Bring Christmas Joy

To Many on Stages Islandwide


Sixteen Aguinaldo groups
took part this year in the ope-
ning of the Aguinaldo Festi-
val 1969 in Wilhelmina Sta-
dium November 28. Through-
out the month of December
the groups thrill large crowds
of young and old through
their Latin style carols in
various clubs on the island.
Dressed in elaborate, colorful
uniforms, the groups sing and
dance to the music of special


instruments, such as guitars,
bongos, maracas and furucus.
The groups include over 400
boys and girls. The program
is organized annually by the
Aguinaldo Festival Commit-
tee. Lago employees cooperat-
ting with the committee are
Francisco L. Dijkhoff (Comp-
troller's-Office Services) as
assistant secretary and Ramon
Nicolaas (Instrument) for pu-
blic address system.

Lago's new sea berth off Commandeursbaai was officially
placed in service December 11, 1969 when the tanker "World
Spirit" unloaded a cargo of heavy fuel blend stock. Equipped
with three metal loading arms, the loading platform about
500 feet from shore is connected with the refinery pipeline
system by six pipelines. The offshore berth is capable of
handling tankers up to 120,000 tons. Project manager of the
4-million guilder offshore mooring facility was Allan Temple
of Mechanical-Engineering, with Alex v. d. Ven as project
engineer, Nick Ecury, field coordinator, and T. A. Trimon,
field equipment inspector.
